Max is not and never has been a forward, that's in part why the Grundy experiment didn't work.

He may well be best in last x years but a closer look at his tap work going to our players consistently might make you stop and take another look.⁹

    And not once have Melbourne bagged him. If he was to open his mouth they’d be plenty coming back the other way.

    He had 17 chances to impress the coaches and it never worked. Goody gave him a lot longer run than it deserved really.

    It caused a lot of division internally and will be discussed a lot as a part of the review of footy ops.

    This is a crazy take. Gawn has set a ridiculously high standard and expectation for ruck output. Grundy was more than serviceable. If you look at the past two seasons I'd argue our best patches of football in that period came when both Grundy and Gawn were playing.

    Ultimately we chose to maximise Gawn's output in the hope of replicating match-winning performances in 2021. Grundy in the team impacted Gawn's output. I think the handling of Grundy has less to do with what he did, and more to do with what Gawn couldn't.

    It is pure crazy talk to say that Grundy's performance alone relegated him to the VFL. It's just not based in reality. And yes I am suggesting we went down the path of preferencing the performance and prefences of the individual than what was best for the team.

    How about the shape he was in when he turned up for preseason and was right down the back in the running?

    Or how bad he was in his positioning even with basic around the ground work rate in the ruck?

    Or his initial form when sent back to Casey?

    He was never serious about fighting for his spot, the moment he lost it he was off elsewhere.

    Yes, but we replaced them with Casey regulars. 
    So I consider it a shocking fail as far as list management goes

    Fort may as well just knee Grundy the moment he runs over to do some grapple "ruck work" at the opening bounce. They won't need him for the first few months next year anyway. :laugh:

    Ummh Brody was actually their best player, not that that is saying a lot. Won the hit outs and at 3 quarter time he was leading the Swans for disposals. He did his job. As did Jordan.

    Nah, he wasn't.  His stats looked ok but once again, played like a little man in a big man's body.  He had no impact.  Rowbottom was actually their best player, and by some margin. Grundy just piled up a bunch of fairly irrelevant handballs and took the grand total of one contested mark for the game.  The Lions would be stoked with Fort's game.

    Jordon hasn't been a high possession player at the Swans all year. That's not his role. It was the Swans prime movers that let them down.

    Takes way too long to get rid of it and has very little dare in his game.

    He’s reliable, and a hard worker, and he had a good moment or two in the qualifying final. But honestly he’s as vanilla as they come. 
    Our decline had nothing to do with him.

Having endured intense criticism from all quarters in the press, which continually identified new avenues for scrutiny of every aspect, both on and off the field, and prematurely speculated about the departures of coaches, players, officials, and various employees from a club that lost its first five matches and appeared out of finals contention, the narrative has suddenly shifted to one of unbridled optimism.  The Demons have won five of their last six matches, positioning themselves just one game (and a considerable amount of percentage) outside the top eight at the halfway mark of the season. They still trail the primary contenders and remain far from assured of a finals berth.

      A few weeks ago, I visited a fellow Melbourne Football Club supporter in hospital, and our conversation inevitably shifted from his health diagnosis to the well-being of our football team. Like him, Melbourne had faced challenges in recent months, but an intervention - in his case, surgery, and in the team's case, a change in game style - had brought about much improvement.  The team's professionals had altered its game style from a pedestrian and slow-moving approach, which yielded an average of merely 60 points for five winless games, to a faster and more direct style. This shift led to three consecutive wins and a strong competitive effort in the fourth game, albeit with a tired finish against Hawthorn, a strong premiership contender.  As we discussed our team's recent health improvement, I shared my observations on the changes within the team, including the refreshed style, the introduction of new young talent, such as rising stars Caleb Windsor, Harvey Langford, and Xavier Lindsay, and the rebranding of Kozzy Pickett from a small forward to a midfield machine who can still get among the goals. I also highlighted the dominance of captain Max Gawn in the ruck and the resurgence in form in a big way of midfield superstars Christian Petracca and Clayton Oliver.
