In that universe we're probably a mid-range 10-14th placed team come 2014-2016 equivalent to the Suns and GAJ, that doesn't get Clarry, Trac and Brayshaw at the highest end of the draft!

true 👍 and also true that Neeld somehow got  us jackson and Roos. We got lucky on the way up didn’t we.

OD I suspect it was to do with Dusty not finishing high school. Very poor by our footy department to not meet with him and get to better understanding of him and his story.

Champion player. Easily the best over a 4 year period and maybe the best of all time according to many. 

Scully and Trengove were clearly pick 1 and 2. Every recruiter at the time said so. 

He would not have become the player he was if he came to the demons. Getting drafted to the demons in those days was a career killer.

Criminal that we didn't even interview him though. Just shows how terrible we were.

Dusty is the best match-winner I have seen. Plays big games and big moments far better than any other player I can recall. His physical strength, fend off, running through tackles, and all round physical dominance are all of the highest quality, but it is his kicking that sets him over everyone else. 

Darren Jarman, Travis Johnstone, Wayne Carey, Mark Browning, Ablett snr - all elite kicks. But Dusty has them all covered. His kicking on the run for goal, or long range field kicking just made me sit back and enjoy the best game in the world.

I would be disappointed for him if he plays anywhere else - he is yellow and black to the core.

I realise that The Festival Of Denounce The Demons is in full swing, but that's just not true.

Drafting is an inexact science that can only be judged with hindsight.

St Kilda drafted Jack Billings ahead of Marcus Bontempelli.  Collingwood picked Nathan Freeman ahead of Patrick Cripps.  Richmond took Richard Tambling ahead of Buddy Franklin and Jarrad Oakley-Nicholls ahead of Nathan Jones.  Hawthorn chose Xavier Ellis ahead of Scott Pendlebury.

James Hird was famously drafted at pick 79 and Chris Grant lasted until pick 105.

Moral of the story?  Every club has its drafting blunders.  It's not just us.

pretty sure the 'character' of a draftee was something that was important at the time - curnow was originally slated to come to us at pick 4 and then slid and slid

ironically we went for oliver who was exemplary in his professionalism...until he wasn't

 TBF we were unlucky with injuries (Trenners) and expansion clubs (Scully) for those 2. 

That being said we retrieved compensation picks for losing Scully, traded for Dominic Barry and selected Jesse Hogan.  The Dockers acquired Hogan and pick 65 from Melbourne in exchange for picks 6 and 23. Then we eventually traded Pick 6 for May and Kade Kolodjashnij. So In theory, drafting Scully helped get us the flag so can't be too angry at the recruiters 😀

From memory Charlie Curnow slid a few places in the draft because of a similar issue with drink driving, imagine if we took him instead of Sam Weideman! we'd have won the last 3 flags
