We could win a three-peat and Brereton would still think we weren't much chop.

I wish we weren’t one of the teams playing tonight… and the frees weren’t so heavily in our favour

Have a feeling umpires will try even up the tally this half.

we really need to be careful and make sure we take full advantage going forward

Port are beating us easily in all stats

I reckon we can get this home. We just need our midfield to click

And Roo to step up. He needs to start clunking some marks, or just making a contest to bring the ball to ground.

Need many of our lesser lights to shine in the second half.

Time for Riv, Sparrow, Fritsch, BBB and Kozzie to get angst it more. Would be handy if Billing’s, JVR & Salem decided to play some football too.

With Port three goals in front and kicking from dead in front for a fourth to our nil in the first quarter, I'm sure most of us would have happily taken a half-time scoreline that's dead level.

The momentum is swinging back and forth.  It's anyone's game!  (brave call, I know)

I did notice a few players skidding along the grass longer than usual. Looks a bit greasy

That would explain a bit.

A lot of very quiet players- Billing’s looks half hearted with only 2 disposals and can’t stick a tackle. ANB’s individual effort that gave Viney a goal was superb. Salem with 3 - WTF. Chin Chandler has become very important. I used to think Rivers could kick - don’t any more.

our tackling is still not great, and we seem to be constantly turning the ball over from the backline or going into attack. keep trying to kick to ben Brown how is getting out marked most of the time, need to have our small leading up. Kozzie needs to do more. well actually a lot of players need to do more. our backline all things consider is trying a lot of pressure on them, our forward line not such a great day so far, time to turn that around

While I'd so love to see Petty up forward, he really is good down back.

Agree with all this except I think Kozzy has been okay.

feel like we’re 3 or 4 goals behind somehow. Just hanging in there but being outplayed imo.

We've got a lot of improvement in us if we can realise it

Viney’s goal - goosebumps

kind of bummed we didn’t consolidate our lead but we are in this. Will be a tussle all night, so just need to have our noses in front at the end. Fritsch needs to get involved.

big start to q3 please!!

Needs to play a more true CHF role imv.

He's playing from behind too often when starting deeper and getting lead to the ball.

BBB deeper to drag their tallest defender away from the drop which might help Roo take a few grabs and/or get to the contest (in front) more often and bring the ball to ground.  Kozzy, Chin, ANB and Vins around his feet.

I wouldn't agree. We started three goals down and when we've taken control, We've looked the better team.

Very even game. Worried Bout the crowd and the umps if it stays close.

We still have plenty of room to kick up a gear.

It is a really good hard contest. They are getting more of the ball, but our backline system is stemming the flood (which is our normal state of play).

I feel we are getting murdered at the ball drop, perhaps we are setting up with too much of an attacking mindset. Also, they are getting it to their half forward line too easily with a lot of link up play unpressured through he middle of the ground. And our achilles heel - field kicking -  Grrrr. Fumbly again. Grrr.

We look far too good pressing forward against their defensive structure - just have to take more of an advantage.

Viney, ANB and Petty doing well.

JVR, Billings and Salem - are they playing?

Downside....Port playing well.

Upside.... we're not and scores are level.

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice?
