DeeZee 7,496 Posted February 22, 2024 Posted February 22, 2024 Gut wrenching news Gus was our family’s favourite player and is a true inspiration in my book. What a terrible start to the year for the MFC, with one bad story after another. 3 1 Quote
Heart Beats True 1,337 Posted February 22, 2024 Posted February 22, 2024 I’m hoping Gus’s brave decision lights a fire in the boy’s stomachs that gives them some perspective of how fickle their time in footy can be and really drives them to attack the upcoming season. With all the external noise happening at the moment, this may centre everyone and give them some focus. 6 1 Quote
darkhorse72 1,943 Posted February 22, 2024 Posted February 22, 2024 Noooooooo.... really disappointed for him and our team. After his early head knocks he seemed to have put it to bed until the Maynard hit. He's going to be missed as he had at least after 4 good years in him to help our team succeed. 1 Quote
Jibroni 5,057 Posted February 22, 2024 Posted February 22, 2024 (edited) Gutted for Gus but as supporters we have admiration for him to have the courage to place his wellbeing ahead of a sporting career. Such a likeable man and loved by his teammates. Edited February 22, 2024 by Jibroni 5 Quote
Superunknown 4,246 Posted February 22, 2024 Posted February 22, 2024 Jeez the club statement and medical advice is unequivocal: because of the knock in the QF. seems a pretty Prima Facie case there eh. 4 Quote

Putting aside the impact this will have on the team on field, off field his presence will be irreplaceable. I don't think I will ever get over the Maynard incident. It still burns in my stomach, and my interest in football has not been the same since. I hope there is a special place waiting in hell for him. Washing Gus all the very best. He has a bright and long future ahead and he deserves to live out his life with a healthy body and mind. Thank you for always putting our club first. It's time you put your health first now. I can't wait to see what Steven May will do to him on the field. 2 Quote
DutchDemons 1,443 Posted February 22, 2024 Posted February 22, 2024 I am devastated. I wish incredibly bad things upon Maynard and Collingwood. 7 1 Quote

SPC 3,596 Posted February 22, 2024 Posted February 22, 2024 Loved him as a player and a bloke. Certainly made the right decision for his future, which looks really bright post football. What will this mean for a list spot? 1 Quote

TheWiz 787 Posted February 22, 2024 Posted February 22, 2024 Congratulations on an amazing AFL career Gus. Decisions like this are always the most difficult, but you have the whole of your life to enjoy and well done in prioritising that. You’re forever a Dees legend 🏆🔴🔵 4 1 Quote
roy11 4,076 Posted February 22, 2024 Posted February 22, 2024 This cup (and its contents) got me through the balance of the 2021 Season & Finals post lockdown, a lucky cup that I will keep forever. What a season 2021 was for Gussy, then 2022 when he was a Brownlow contender and not even invited! 3 Quote
La Dee-vina Comedia 17,137 Posted February 22, 2024 Posted February 22, 2024 (edited) Brayshaw reminds me of Luke Ball in that upon retirement he has so many options available to him. Will he go into the media? Into AFL coaching? Into an admin role at club level or within the AFL itself? Few players who retire have these options. Whatever he chooses, I'm sure he'll be successful. With Paddy McCartin, that means picks 1 and 3 from the same draft have been forced into early retirement because of concussion. Edited February 22, 2024 by La Dee-vina Comedia typo 3 2 3 Quote
2021 301 Posted February 22, 2024 Posted February 22, 2024 Awful news. Gus you were a gun. Looking for any positive, hopefully we can get a spare list spot & bring in a back up ruck. 1 Quote

Pennant St Dee 13,452 Posted February 22, 2024 Posted February 22, 2024 Thanks for the memories and bleeding red and blue throughout your career Gus. A very small part of your life in the big scheme of things is done, time for you to enjoy a healthy life which I have no doubt will involve football in some capacity. Good luck to you and your family A Dee forever 3 1 Quote
Fritta and Turner 4,696 Posted February 22, 2024 Posted February 22, 2024 Absolutely the right decision for Gus. Will always be a MFC hero. ([censored] decision for me though, gone teary). 1 Quote
bush demon 2,209 Posted February 22, 2024 Posted February 22, 2024 Congratulations on a brave decision. The AFL needs to examine its core business model, it certainly shouldn't be to expose elite sportsmen to its high-risk rules and the baying of the crowd and sponsors. 2 1 Quote
pitmaster 3,592 Posted February 22, 2024 Posted February 22, 2024 Very sad news but he has much to be proud of. Having seen the reasoning - microscopic changes to the brain post-Maynard's hit - he has of course made the right decision. He will be greatly missed as he was coming into his prime. All the best for the future, Gus! 2 1 Quote
