But they have their obvious strengths and they have a role to play in the team. I just want them to stick to their strengths and not bite off more than they can chew. Granted Westy turned the ball over against Brisbane but we got beaten up badly in the midfield physically against North and that is why she was back in the team today and shouldn’t have been dropped in the fist place. Personally I would have dropped McNamara who was again ineffective today costing us 2 goals from her turnovers. Dropped chestmark in the second and a turnover kick in the third. McNamara tries but it’s not happening for her and think West has more value to the team than McNamara. Will be an interesting off season for the list management team. Far too many excuses last week with illness, so what is this week? When you let an opposition get out to a big lead then you find yourself majority of the game playing catch up and it can be mentally draining. Some big decisions looms for a few players in the off season. What an incredibly disappointing finish to the year. There is a sameness to how they performed in the finals, and the game plan looked very familiar with a heavy reliance on a tall at the edge of the square who didn’t take marks and their finals downfall was poor kicking which led to poor forward connection. It’s hard not to compare. but gee the girls brand of footy was great to watch up to round 8. Actually so were the men….. 3 Quote
Demonsone 2,056 Posted November 19, 2023 Posted November 19, 2023 Perhaps we have become a club who thinks that we are the best and win flags to the the point that’s what they are looking at and not what the next game or the next play ??? 1 Quote

Men win 10 games in a row, Women's played amazing first half of the year but both absolutely choked in finals. 1 1 Quote

Not Banno level soft but room for improvement Kate Hope soft????? She is tough and throws herself into packs adding strength to her obvious skills. Very harsh comment citing just one incident which I didn't notice. You are a hard marker. You don't be multiple All Australians being so called soft. Chill mate! 2 Quote

She’s 95% there but for a captain there’s another level required. Our star players this year fell short. That’s Hore, Harris, Zanker (pre q4), Hanks (more of a rotation mid), Purcell, Gay. They have to go up a level to match the oppositions stars. 1 Quote

Absolutely get where you are coming from. Last year it was “ Demon Spirit” merchandise for finals. This year it was “ Possessed” merchandise. To the Melbourne Football Club, please no more slogans just let your football do the talking. Win finals, especially finals in Melbourne. That will put dollars in the bank account and give us more credibility. 3 2 Quote

Trying to suggest we were in everyone else's heads, then to crash out in straight sets, to the Big Clubs with their 19th Man and all that. Terrible. 2 Quote

Leads by example too and you can't do much more than that. Are you really saying she is not a good leader? 2 Quote
BDA 23,048 Posted November 19, 2023 Posted November 19, 2023 Far out. Another choke. Goddam it. less talk about culture and more action on the field next season please. Very disappointing finals series for both teams for different reasons. hopefully the club can reset properly in the off season and come back stronger next year. 2 Quote

Just get out there and play white line fever (like Demons) every game. That's all that matters from that point and it shouldn't need constant pre-match re-emphasise via corporate branding / vids etc. Very cringeworthy. 2 1 Quote
DeeZone 10,590 Posted November 19, 2023 Posted November 19, 2023 After playing so good for 2/3rds of the year it is very unusual to fall away so dramatically at the pointy end of the year. Why the fall from grace, one moment we are playing like a well oiled machine then two weeks later we look like a bunch of strangers. Something has broken down within the team structure, maybe two finals series in the one year is a step to far? Quote

Dees_In_October 3,515 Posted November 20, 2023 Posted November 20, 2023 Such a disappointing end to the season! Would have never guessed circa Round 9 that we'd crash and burn so spectacularly. First three quarters were basically a repeat of the last few weeks, though we were more physical and had slightly better connection and at least were able to create some movement forward. But the players left loose, lack of run, missed kicks and repeatedly being pushed under the footy in marking contests, sigh. And some ill discipline creeping in due to the frustration of it all. A different team in the last quarter, though part of that was Geelong initially taking a foot of the pedal to let us back in. Credit to the those who led the fight back though. THANK GOD FOR GOLDRICK. It does suggest that there were some mental shackles on the team, that once released, saw us show some spark. Even still, if we'd snuck over the line, barring some miraculous return to form, I couldn't see us doing much against Brisbane. The competition is narrowing in the middle section. Next season might see the bridge to the top teams crossed. It's dangerous to stagnate in this competition where staying still means going rapidly backwards. This is the first year that I feel like what we added in personnel or game plan was consolidation rather than progress. Recent performances notwithstanding, though, we do have a good core of players who can learn and execute a (hopefully revitalised!) game plan. Anyway, thanks to everyone for the discussion here this season. Time to turn back to the men's. Thus is the cycle of the never-ending football season. 7 1 1 Quote
dees189227 12,512 Posted November 20, 2023 Posted November 20, 2023 Very disappointing. Kicking 1 goal again until 3/4 time is not good enough. Like the men's team, a wasted year 1 Quote

layzie 34,528 Posted November 20, 2023 Posted November 20, 2023 I wasn't able to catch a lot of the girls games this year so it's made it easier to judge this game on it's merits. Got jumped and didn't seem to have an answer, it looked like it was over obviously as 5 goal margins in a final are hard to reel in when you have next to nothing on the board. I have to give a lot of credit for the fightback though, playing quick and taking the game on through the middle. These girls are lighting fast with handballs off the deck and we used it to our advantage in the second half. Goldrick was sensational and a catalyst for it all, Zanker made the most of opportunites and binned them when they were badly needed. A late shot at goal almost forcing the tie and who knows what would have happened with another 5 seconds on the clock. The fightback was awesome, but when all is said and done you do have to look to that start that we gave up. If you're not ready, you get rolled. Flat way to end the year from the guys and girls. 2 Quote
