SEN Advertising

Featured Replies

That interview this morning was almost unlistenable. The amount of ads Played in each break was outrageous!! In the old days there was a limit of 6 advertisements per break, that law obviously doesn’t exist anymore

I don't listen to SEN live unless i's in the car and can change the station when the ads start.

I jump on the SEN website later and listen to the segments i want to watch. No ads that way

Spot on. I gave up listening live a while back because of the ridiculous amount of ads. The 30min breakfast catch up doesn't have ads, nor does the entire 3 hour show which goes for under 2 hours. That tells you something.

Simply unlistenable live.

Not going to National Tiles today?

i wouldn't know ... never been there

the idea of a 24/7/365 talkback radio show mainly devoted to afl and hutchenomics is enough to stay clear

Identifibre is seared into my brain. I'll certainty know where to go if i need to talk to the professionals regarding asbestos.

You can also add OMF plus the little jingle in-between.

Or you can sleep in, then listen to it ad-free when Andy posts it on here. 😃

I'd rather listen to the ads than Cornes

I have used them.Get a quote that covers All aspects of the job.I had a fishy experience with them 10 years ago.

Best add ever on SEN was one they didn't do themselves (although there were internal suspects)

Some random never identified as far as i'm aware was putting messages in a bottle saying they won a prize on Rex Hunts fishing show and to call up the station. Dropping them in the bay for people to find.

They got innundated with people calling up to claim there non existant prize.

Never mentioned on air because they didn't want copy cats.

That may well be the top comment of yesterday.

The business section of today's "The Age" has a whole page article devoted to SEN.

https://www.theage.com.au/business/companies/craig-hutchison-s-sports-and-media-empire-on-the-ropes-as-directors-auditor-sound-alarm-20231108-p5eij3.html

It's paywalled, but, in essence, the headline says it all: "Craig Hutchison's sports and media empire on the ropes as directors, auditor sound alarm".

Other interesting points in the article refer to the questionable strategy of owning sporting franchises (SEN owns a netball team and at least one basketball team); while SEN in Melbourne rates between 3-4%, its ratings in Brisbane and Sydney are dismal (0.9% and 0.7% respectively); SEN's horse racing coverage is apparently a "cash cow" for the company; about five people, including Hutchison own about 60% of SEN; Nine Entertainment (which also owns The Age) holds a small piece of SEN through 3AW.

To be fair to SEN, I think the headline might be a touch dramatic. It's correct that the financial performance of SEN has seen it burn through cash, but that has been during a period of acquisitions. Now that SEN has a national footprint, the acquiring stage would appear to be over, so SEN may now be making money.

It's an interesting dilemma  for  its management.

I presume Ratings are important, but the reason the station is so hard to listen to is all the advertising. I don't count them, but sometimes I think  there must be  about  ten ads between discussion segments.

Obviously their  revenue must  depend  largely on advertising, but they just couldn't have more than they do now.

If the ratings are low, they can' t charge the advertisers more than they  do now.

I occasionally ask a friend  "did you hear  that interview on SEN". Invariably, they"ll reply...I just can't listen to that station  because of all the ads!"

Yep. The amount of ads is why I've stopped listening.  You are right, they can't have more. It's already more than a 3rd of airtime. I listen to the occasional Corn free breakfast replay (which doesn't include the ads). La Dee-vina makes some good observations, but you'd still be a tad nervous as an employee.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?

It was only a preseason match but the new look Demons spearheaded by new coach Steven King looked impressive as they put on a clinic against perennial cellar-dwellers North Melbourne as they cruised to an 80 point victory at Casey Fields.
