Thought there might be something to this when our name popped up last week. Gave me Lachie Hunter vibes from last years trade period.

We need mature depth so not against this if he comes cheaply from a draft capital perspective. Has an excellent field kick on him. Can see him playing high half forward/wing with an occasional centre square attendance.

The top ten in the 2013 draft makes for interesting reading:

  1. Tom Boyd - Giants
  2. Josh Kelly - Giants (pick traded from Melbourne)
  3. Jack Billings - Saints
  4. Marcus Bontempelli  - Bulldogs
  5. Kade Kolodjashnij - Gold Coast
  6. Matthew Scharenberg - Collingwood
  7. James Aish  - Lions
  8.  Luke McDonald - Roos
  9. Christian Salem - Dees (mid first round compensation pick from 2010 traded from Giants)
  10.  Nathan Freeman - Collingwood

Dees end up with three top 10 picks from that draft!

(note: we picked up hunt and traded in Dom Tyson as part of the pick swap that saw Kelly go to the Giants and Salo to us. A Paul Roos call)

Gee, that really was a mixed bag of a top 10.

Not to say we wouldn't do our due diligence, but St Kilda seem a bit too eager to see him out the door.

Still, seems a low risk, high reward bit of business.

It's probably already been posted, but this is a good article on Jack - why he hasn't been chased harder during the trade period, and also does a deep drive into his performance to date.

https://www.zerohanger.com/why-arent-clubs-chasing-jack-billings-stkilda-saints-afl-trade-period-144137/

In the article, it's mentioned that he's clearly talented, but seems to have regressed and has definitely failed to live up to the hype.  Lots of the chat here reminded me of one of our most famous 'never-met-potential' Jacks.

BUT - it is also mentioned that he has been a little unlucky with injuries, 3 coaches and a lack of certainty about club direction, where he plays. So he would benefit from clearer positioning/role and some luck with injuries etc.

He's on approx $500k, contracted for the next 2 years.

I guess the question is do we need another small/medium half forward??? Who goes out?

Great article. Love the final sentences.

Where will Billings land, though?

That's the future fourth-round question.

Many had the same concerns about Hunter this very day last year, but we managed to get 24 games out of him.

I'm confident we've done our due diligence if we end up getting him.

I sense that getting Billings would represent a concession that we’re unlikely to be able to pick up Harley Reid in this draft.

Not sure if means anything on our chances of moving up to get Reid.

I assume we will want to slide our pick in the 40s lower and/or give up a future fourth round pick for Billings, as we need to preserve our future second and third round picks in order to be allowed to trade our future first round pick. Picking up Billings might mean that we think Kynan Brown is only worth a rookie pick, as we might not have enough senior list spots.

I think Salem is a high half back only. It is the easiest position on the ground and suits his exceptional ability to read the play and hit targets.

He does not have the engine required to play ANB's role or play wing and I don't think he is big enough or quick enough to play inside midfield.

Fair points.

The key for salo is some luck with injury and the thyroid stuff.

If he has an uninterrupted preseason i'm confident he will get back to his best. If he does it will almost be like having a new recruit.

Brayshaw over Woewodin & Sparrow over Chandler for mine.

But agree that with McAdam in Petracca should move back to starting mid.

Another small body ..just what they dont need.

When has any player  thrived/ reached their potential after trading to the Dee's.. ?

Names please? Take your time

May, Lever, Hibbo, Langdon... just a few PREMIERSHIP players who reached their potential after being traded to Melbourne.

But by all means lets just keep taking a dump on our club

@DistrACTION Jackson beat me to it!

I hope they make this trade a part of a last day of trading MEGA-DEAL. Especially if there were no reason for it to be included within it.

Well one that immediately comes to mind is another 'small body'.

Brian Wilson started his career at the dogs, went to the roos before landing at the dees where he played 150 plus games.

And won a Brownlow.

Was that quick enough?

I've got more if needed.

If we were you , we’d spend our time wondering why the glass was never half full

So you're happy having 10 small forwards on the list and no midfield depth? That's bound to end well for us.

I'm all for us getting Billings. More likely a better choice than pick 42.

B: McVee, May, Lever

HB: Rivers, D.Turner, Bowey

C; Langdon, Oliver, Hunter

HF: Petracca, van Rooyen, Neal-Bullen

F: Fritsch, Petty, Smith

FOLL: Gawn, Brayshaw, Viney

IC: Salem, Sparrow, McAdam, Billings

SUB: Chandler

EMERG: Spargo, Woewodin, Fullerton

Pickett comes in the week after Billings or McAdam under the pump.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

Following a disastrous 0–5 start to the season, the Demons have now made it three wins in a row, cruising past a lacklustre West Coast side on their own turf. Skipper Max Gawn was once again at his dominant best, delivering another ruck masterclass to lead the way.
