Think we'll only get 1 x first, or a player trade

Isn't Petts OOC at the end of the year?

No.

Sorry but why would we be getting a “mid teens” compensation pick?

Petty vs McKay

24 years vs. 26 years old

Pick 37 vs Pick 21

62 games vs 71 games

1x Premiership vs Nil.

McKay Essendon Deal

6 years at $850k pa = Round 1 compensation pick (#3)

John Ralf Reported Offer

5 years at $800k pa = Mid Teens

If he stays next year then walks as a free agent, and if we get band 1 compensation, then we get the first pick after our own. Which, if we are any good next year, will be mid-teens. North Melbourne got pick 3 because their first pick in the draft was pick 2.

Unless we get a godfather offer or another key forward coming in we should hold him to his contract. Even if we end up getting less for him at end of 2025 it gives us two more years to have a crack at a flag with him while Gawn, May, Viney are still around. You gotta strike while the irons hot, no point planning for the future when now is the time to win flags.

I agree…but I got the feeling there was an agreement to “stay one more year”.

Same question.  What evidence is there that Petty wants to go home other than anyone's attraction to $$$$$?

Beetle is pretty good with his mail on club matters

7 more months of this.

Well, observing whether Harry Petty stays with Melbourne  or not for the next 7 months is like peeking into Schroedinger's box -  he's simultaneously both a Demon and not a Demon.

And we know human's dislike uncertainty immensely...

Max Papley says hi!

This week coming is a breeding ground for rumours. He’s likely to have a few journos trying to get some good set up pics, but with gather round I’m sure the whole town will be abuzz anyways. Wishing him continued good health, a great asset to have on field.

I would go hard for Thilthorpe, he'll be injured most of this season so could be a bit under the radar. He offers a good backup rick option as well.

Going to be a very interesting end of year this year. We are potentially going to be overflowing with cap space and there are no obvious key forwards available to trade in. Players creating cap space are obviously Brayshaw, likely BBB, probably T Mac and Tomlinson. There's going to be a lot of scope to throw a big contract at him, very heavily front ended for next season.  If not there's still a real argument IMO to hold him to his contract next season while we are so much in the window and forego the difference between what Crows would offer this year in a trade and what we'd get for compo next season if he leaves as a free agent. Or maybe there will be a bidding war over there with Port and we'll get fair picks anyway.

You are probably correct in this scenario. At times, however, we seem to be placing far too much emphasis on full forward dominance where, to my mind oftentimes, we really need a gun CHF (or two) and dynamic, super-optimistic smalls like Kozzie prepared to run amok, go the screamer when plausible, kick the ball a mile with lethal accuracy and unexpected aplomb - from just inside the fwd arc or closer in to the tepid zone, not the hot zone in a constant pursuit of optimism. Our game and delivery systems currently best serve the 50 - 40 metre arcs from goal; we all have seen the absolute goal square and fwd pocket shambles for nearly a decade. Just a thought, coz a gun FFwd might do the trick (with appropriate variations in our delivery and receiving circumstances.

He is also a SA boy.

Will he be an FA or a Restricted Free Agent?

No he’s a contracted player till end of 25. He wants to go so we’ll facilitate it. It’s going to cost the crows

Now that's a great post

It also means the Crows (or whoever) haven't got him any earlier.

Bit of insurance

No thanks DG.  Had a few good games early on but very injury prone and too soft for mine.

To be clearer:

In October 2025 when out of contract, will he be a free agent or restricted free agent?

The rule is:

- Restricted Free Agent: 8 years service, and in the top 25% of players (in terms of TPP)

- Unrestricted Free Agent: 8 years service and outside the top 25% of players or 10 years service

Petty signed on in 2021 for 4 years (to the end of 2025). At the time he was a premiership defender but unsure if it was a big money contract. But assuming his salary wasnt bargain basement, in 2025 I'd expect that he'd in the best 25% of players because many of our stars will be older and in late years of contracts (May, Gawn, Viney, with Brown and TMac off the books, and Lever having extended out).

So I'm not sure if he is a Restricted or Unrestricted free agent in 2025.

Regarding whether he'll actually go, I truly believe last year was about money. We signed him on a 4 year contract and he was half way through say he was on $500k. Adelaide reportedly threw $4 mil over 5 years at him. Of course that sounds like a good deal. But when it comes to it, we'll be offering very similar to what Adelaide offer to extend his contract. And we'll have TMac and Brown and Angus salaries freed up too. He isn't from Adelaide itself either.

It might happen, bit I don't think it's a foregone conclusion.

I got the feeling the agreement was "you're contracted and unless they stump up something crazy you're staying".

They wanted to slip him into the McAdam trade, which is crazy, the wrong kind of crazy.

We would have needed a ready made replacement at such short notice given our premiership aspirations this year.

Pick 1 for him?

Does Hazz want to go to a wooden spooner without a coach

“I got the feeling..” was in reference to the conversation I had, not poor grammar.

But yes, the club knew/knows how important he is to our structure and know they can no longer rely on Brown and McDonald.

From the discussion I had, I think there is an agreement between the club and Petty that we will do the right thing by him, if he agreed to stay for another year while we are still in that window of opportunity….and yes that is most likely due to the fact Adelaide weren’t able to offer a like for like replacement.

They believe once Petty is fully match fit and McAdam is available, the forward line will be firing.

Crows will be bottom 4-6. Walker looks about done so Crows will be desperate for another KPP. I’d be asking for their 1st and 2nd round pick if he doesn’t want to stay of course.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

I suppose that I should apologise for the title of this piece, but the temptation to go with it was far too great. The memory of how North Melbourne tore Melbourne apart at the seams earlier in the season and the way in which it set the scene for the club’s demise so early in the piece has been weighing heavily upon all of us. This game was a must-win from the club’s perspective, and the team’s response was overwhelming. The 36 point win over Alastair Clarkson’s Kangaroos at the MCG on Sunday was indeed — roovenge of the highest order!

  • CASEY: Werribee

The Casey Demons remain in contention for a VFL finals berth following a comprehensive 76-point victory over the Werribee Tigers at Whitten Oval last night. The caveat to the performance is that the once mighty Tigers have been raided of many key players and are now a shadow of the premiership-winning team from last season. The team suffered a blow before the game when veteran Tom McDonald was withdrawn for senior duty to cover for Steven May who is ill.  However, after conceding the first goal of the game, Casey was dominant from ten minutes in until the very end and despite some early errors and inaccuracy, they managed to warm to the task of dismantling the Tigers with precision, particularly after half time when the nominally home side provided them with minimal resistance.
