We've just lost our senior head of strategy on game day & midfield coach. A big blow given we've hardly set foot outside the top 4 in three seasons. Who are the leading contenders to fill this void? Ideas floated have been a more offensively minded thinker, the likes of Don Pyke or Blake Caracella. Alternatively, do we stick with what we know and go for a more defensively minded thinker?

Do we look at someone tried and tested, or give the opportunity for a recent retiree to cut their teeth? Yze's are big shoes to fill and the decision will surely shape our fortunes for the next period of time. Whoever steps in will have a A grade midfield to work with, it will be a highly sought after role in my opinion. Thoughts?

In my opinion this isn't a role to cut your teeth on. Almost like the head coaching job you would need at least 2 years experience in the system for roles like this these days. 

From all reports Burgess was heavily involved in our gameday strategy before he left as well.

We've lost alot of IP with both of them leaving.

Whoever gets the role will need to be innovative like Burgess and Yze.

Yze has been branded the ball movement coach. We haven't ranked very highly in this area for a while so its hard to get a read on whether this coaching vs player execution. 

Our stoppage work hasnt fared well either. Someone who can fundamentally change the way we transition / move the ball within the confines of the defense and contest mantra. 

Dew is a question mark i think. I think he was never able to get a hold of the players at Gold Coast due to lack of maturity and culture. Our team would be different and will be eager to learn and execute. Other question is whether Dew even has a desire to come back to the assistant world or just leave footy all together - it would be pretty humbling and you'd need to put your ego to the side. 

How is Don Pyke relevant these days?  *

Been an assistant to Longmire for a couple of years.  was considered a chance for the Collingwood job before McRae.  More likely for the CEO job at West Coast to replace Trevor Nisbett.

Interesting that old mate Craig Jennings is offence coach for GWS. No chance he comes back to us.

Ben Hart is GWS' midfield coach and Leppitsch is obviously at Collingwood as Head of Strategy. 

Scott Burns has done well for Adelaide's defence, but is a South Aussie and also senior assistant at Adelaide, so unlikely.

Cameron Bruce is midfield and stoppage coach at Brisbane.

Tim Clarke and Aaron Greaves (coaching and innovation manager) have done well at Carlton.

And then there's Stuart Dew.

Bruce has had an interesting coaching career trajectory. Obviously, started at Hawthorn in 2013 and then went to Carlton with Bolton in 2017, and was sacked along with Bolton in 2021. He immediately got the job of midfield coach at Brisbane under Fagan (another Hawthorn connection of course) and has overseen their midfield the last two years.

Be fascinating to see who we go for and whether their role is two pronged, midfield and ball movement.

Would love Pyke.  Swans would be very unhappy to see him go.

Not a fan of getting Ratten, although the has been great for footy I am not sure he is the sort of person we need.  Goody coaches from the bench and we need an innovator in the box which I don’t think Ratts is 

My top picks would be (and we need to move Stafford on as well):

• Stewart Dew
• Brenton Sanderson
• Joel Selwood (development coach)
• Todd Goldstein (Bring in as second ruck and move to ruck coach in 2025)
• Leppitsch (but wishful thinking)

Life would have been very different if we got Leppitsch when he was available

Joel Selwood would be fantastic. 

Im not a fan of Stewy Dew as a coach. Politically correct people might not like it being said, but a coach presenting themselves to young footballers in a very overweight (practically obese) physical condition is not a good look. How can others take your messages about discipline and getting the best out of yourself as an athlete, when you yourself are clearly not practicing what you preach? Harsh but unfortunately I think a valid opinion about Dew.

Yes, someone who will challenge the current mindset/thinks outside of the box

Personally I would like to see Goody coach up in the box watching and making moves but come down from time to time but as i said it is my only my personal view.

True , but so many men and women these days are overweight or in USA where theyre flat out humungus obese 101.

Mark McVeigh - started to get the Giants back on track with Himmelberg back and more expansive game plan. Swans academy and Allies coach now so exposed to a lot of elite juniors 

Stuey Dew - probably prefer him as forwards than mids, don’t like the Suns defensive structures or ball use but their forwards compete hard

McQualter - didn’t love his caretaker stint but would like some Richmond ball movement IP

 

We won't do it, but bringing Boak in as a playing coach i think would be smart, he can play a role and will be an incredible coach

Not sure Goody is valued anywhere like a Hardwick or Clarko, but hard to say a coach on the rise shouldn’t attach themselves to the Dees midfield. 

Reckon the Dees forwards are a huge opportunity too for a good coach to come in and fix them up
