A million bucks plus and two key forward list spots wasted heading into 2024. Both did not contribute meaningfully at all in 2023. Any way you look at it that’s a list management howler. Worse than the Grundy trade if we’re being honest. Who was responsible for it? Will it hamstring our chances to win the flag next year? Should we try to come to an arrangement with at least one of these players to call time on their careers? That’s a hell of a lot of cash allocated to Casey ‘mentors’ and to have sitting in the rehab room. Worth a discussion even if some find it uncomfortable. Elephant in the room stuff for mine. 🏡🐘

Personally I think they gambled that Brown would get through the season.  Unfortunately his knees are done.

I guess it might be now but back when we recruited Brown it took the 4 year deal to get it over the line.  We won the flag so in my eyes will always be worth it.  He's a good guy too, who is doing some great things with the AFLW program.  Unlikely he'll play any senior footy again but I'm sure will lob onto the long term injury list at some point and enable us to pick up another player.

Retire Brown. Can't afford to carry a player that is constantly missing games each year due to cooked knees.

I'd happily trade/retire McDonald but I think he stays purely for depth and being a long time servant of the club they'll want to do the right thing by him.

Current situation is a bummer, but in terms of list management BBB's contract terms got him to us and helped us win a flag, and pretty sure it was reported that TMac's last extension spread his money over more years, providing cap space to lock in our Tracs and Olivers, etc.

I wonder too if we may be waiting to see how things play out this trade period before perhaps paying one of them out.

Both should be given the tap

Hang around, use the gym, get some physio done, answer emails and mentor, but must never be picked again

As for the BG trade, 20/20 hindsight is a beautiful thing - no point dwelling, move on...

Brown started the year well with 8 goals in his first 2 games, but it appears his knees are cactus and father time may have caught up to Tommy Mc.

I still wouldn't be shocked if we do trade Tomlinson and McDonald is moved back to defence at Casey as our key defensive back up so we're at least spreading out the two key post spots taken between forward and back and not just forward.

if we trade Tomlinson and keep McDonald as a KPD, I'll become a Collingwood supporter.

Re: BBB His wife did say on social media that his knee is ''looking better and ready to get moving' , granted neither she or us are medically trained.

Guess its one for the coaching staff, medical staff and BBB to sit down and have a chat.

Yep buddy let him down. BBB had a great pre season and started the first few games well. Body just not up to it any more

To me that seems poor negotiating. Shouldn’t it be the player who makes a bit of a sacrifice in terms of dollars or length of contract in order to have a chance of playing in a premiership winning side? It was Brown who wanted to move from a bottom to a top club. Seems our list manager got that principle [censored] about.

And you didn’t mention TMac. Poor decision to extend his deal for TWO full years beyond 2022 given his age and obvious slowing down.

These were football department decisions (Tim Lamb?) that basically left us with a gaping hole and precious little back up in attack for 2023 and possibly will for 2024 as well. Some poor decision making on the part of the football department.

If Tmac stays and gets a game in the seniors then it's season over before it starts

I like this idea, would be good to provide support and knowledge to Adams and Turner

Love posters who we never here from until things go South

List howlers - give me a spell, Brown came for 3 years would likely have gone elsewhere if we offered 2. Managed perfectly in our premiership year

Tmac been a great servant to the club, but time and injuries have taken their toll

Let’s be honest the way they straightened us up through the back end of 21, we don’t win it without them

I would prefer him spending the whole year down at Casey educating and developing our younger forward crop.

But I agree, if he plays it means we've been absolutely decimated with injuries 2019 style.

I think a bit of calm may be needed here, it's not quite time to throw the baby out with the bathwater and volunteer the whole bathroom to Scotty Cam for a nice Tuscan-style reno.

We went into the season with BBB, McDonald, JVR and Petty all as key forward options.  Then we had support in Fritta, Melksham and Smith as mid-size. No-one thought that:

  • JVR would play as much as he did, or as well as he did
  • Petty and Melksham would both peak as forwards, then have season-ending injuries
  • BBB and McDonald would make it through the season
  • Smith would have the game of his life, kicking 3 in our final game of the season

What you need is depth and cover for an AFL season, as well as the opportunity for new players to get experience and learn.

BBB does seem to be well and truly shot, Im not sure if the club can risk him being available for 4-8 games a season. If he can't do more than that, you'd think retirement is on the cards.

McDonald does seem past his best, but he does have a full pre season to get match fit and his body right.  I do think there is a place for him to provide the depth needed, Im not saying he's in the starting 22, but you need back-ups. He has also done the team thing (salary wise) to help us hold onto our mids etc.  Sacrifice goes both ways.

We have finished top 4 in the last four seasons, and while bad kicking is bad football, there is still plenty of upside with the majority of the list we have.

Brown came for 4 years, not 3 as you’ve stated.

You are correct about the two of them being crucial to premiership success in 2021 but by the end of 2024, a full three years later, both will have contributed next to nothing to our push for a second flag. THREE full seasons.

’Let’s be honest’ - that’s not really acceptable.

Clearly no list management howler.

Everyone on here was delighted to have Brown come over. T Mac looked unbelievable at times in 2018 and 2021 and was clearly worth persisting with as Weideman didn’t come on (he was a drafting miss).

and your contention that heading into 2024 we are wasting two list spots, you really think both will on the list in 2024? not a chance

yeah mate, you are the only one that thinks these two guys are too old and injury prone. we are think they are the key to success next year

that you Hutchy?

  • Thank You Simon Goodwin

As Demon fans, we’ve ridden a rollercoaster of emotions over the decades; the heartbreaks, the near misses, the wooden spoons, and the endless waiting. But through it all, we clung to hope. And then came Simon Goodwin. Before he ever wore red and blue, he was a champion in his own right. A five-time All-Australian, two-time Best and Fairest, and two-time premiership hero and Captain with Adelaide, Simon Goodwin was always destined to lead. When he transitioned from the field to the coach's box, first as an assistant at Essendon, he began shaping a new legacy.

Long ago and far away, the Melbourne Football Club replaced its coach in difficult circumstances after the team suffered a devastating loss. In the aftermath, I penned the following words: “Then came the politics, the intrigue, the axing, the sound of the football world laughing at a club, the circling of the media vultures, the reinvention of history, the anger, the irony, the pathos, the hurt on the face of the president, the dignified departure of the coach, and the determination of the newly appointed caretaker.” Today, we’re back in the same place although one difference here is that the coach who was terminated this time is Simon Goodwin, the man who four years ago

  • REPORT: West Coast

The Charles Dickens novel, A Tale of Two Cities, opens with, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, …”  This phrase highlights many of the significant challenges that humanity encounters in life, ranging from experiencing remarkable highs to living in times of despair. This is a concept that should resonate with all supporters of the Melbourne Football Club this morning as they reflect on its comprehensive 83-point victory over the struggling West Coast Eagles at Marvel Stadium. The outcome proved beyond doubt that they are the worst of clubs and that we are the best of the worst.
