Vale Ronald Dale Barassi - Rest in Peace

Featured Replies

Absolutely devastated to learn of Ron's passing today.

He is Melbourne football club.

♥️

A true legend.  Perhaps the greatest figure in the games history.

Not a great weekend for the Club. So good to see him return to the fold in recent years and that he got to enjoy our 2021 premiership.

For many of my generation who grew up in our golden era in the 50s and early 60s, he was our first true hero.

Rest in peace, dear Ronald Dale Barassi.

At a club function on the occasion of Ron’s 80th birthday, one of the tributes was from tenor David Hobson who sang “You Raise Me Up” as requested by the guest of honour. For those of us who were blessed to grow up following the Demons during the time when RDB ruled as Mr Football, this song will always resonate with us … we were always strong when we were on his shoulders.

Never missed an MCG game until recently.

So important we got that flag for him.

Thoughts with his family.

Lets hope it galvanises our beautiful football club.

The last game before his death - Melbourne v Carlton. Somewhat fitting

This week has been some sort of emotional roller-coaster.

Rip great man..

His heart always pumped red and blue.

What [censored] news.

Just saw this. I had heard he hadn't been well. Had a fall then suffered complications. RIP Ron. A legend of Melbourne & football.

Gee you always thought he'd be there to present us the cup on the G one day.

Appropriate it was Melbourne v Carlton that was playing. His last match he probably either watched or listened to.

A sad sad day.

RIP great man. Thank you for all the wonderful times you brought to our club. My condolences to his family!

Rest in peace RDB 31 Legend 🔴🔵

The joy on his face at the flag raising last year is one of the all time great moments

I’m glad he lasted long enough to know we are again a respectable successful club.

A true gent.

Absolutely devastating.

I am shocked to hear Ronald Dale Barassi has passed away. 😔

He deserves a state funeral.

A HUGE part of the VFL/AFL.

He will be sorely missed!

A true Demon legend!

Glad he got to witness the breaking of our 57 year Premiership drought!

Will be remembered with fondness by Melbourne, Carlton, North Melbourne and Sydney.

A monument to the game of Australian Rules Football!

Rest In Peace Ron!

Also sorry if our goal kicking last night was the last football thing you got to watch.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

Melbourne returned to its city citadel, IKON Park, boasting a 10–2 home record and celebrating its 100th AFLW matchwith 3,711 fans creating a finals atmosphere. But in a repeat of Round 11, Brisbane proved too strong, too fit, and too relentless.  They brought their kicking boots: 9 goals, 2 points.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Brisbane

Forget the haunting of Round 11 — we’ve got this. Melbourne returns to its inner-city fortress for its milestone 100th AFLW match, carrying a formidable 10–2 record at IKON Stadium. Brisbane’s record at the venue is more balanced: 4 wins, 4 losses and a draw.

It’s been a season of grit, growth, and glimpses of brilliance—mixed with a few tough interstate lessons. Now, with finals looming, the Dees head to Kardinia Park for one last tune-up before the real stuff begins.

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.
