Has anyone heard anything about Max’s foot? Some wild rumours on FB.

Not sure about Max's foot but Clarry has a compression bandage on his left knee in a photo on Instagram (featuring future father daughter Tilly Smith)

Was hoping to be down the peninsula on Friday night as opposed to bush bashing crowds around the G.

C'est la vie...

You know what's annoying. We were the laughing stock all those years ago because we were no good, now if we drop out of finals again in straight sets again we will be the laughing stock.

Carlton missed the starting pistol for the season and spent the rest of the year trying to recover.

My theory is they responded to the fact they had pre season injuries by changing to a 1 pit stop strategy. Doing their preseason early to mid season to peak about 4 weeks ago in a mad dash to make finals. This will mean they won't have the gas in the 4th.

Melbourne will win the fourth quarter. Just depends how far back we get ourselves.

Bop Bop....Bopping the Blues.....

( a little long...perhaps get a red, a beer or a panadol.... )

There's an old adage; If it aint broke ...don't fix it. Agruably conversely if it is BROKEN....you amy well want to FIX it !!

Our predicament is we enter all games currently as a game of two halves... Not quarters per se....but a Front Half and a back half.  Our Defence work's pretty good most of the time and certainly isn't the prime concern. Our front half is....let's be polite....broken.

It bumbled along quite ok until recently whilst we had Petty , who finally found his straps and it started working. Alas poor Petty...we knew him well..      Enter stage left.... Melksham.  A more than handy replacement as it turned out.....and then....well....

Since then...quite frankly it's a shambles. No coherence, no connect.  Now there's a word..and indeed the crux of the dilemma ( imho )...CONNECTION.  From the back half to the front hald there is bugger all. And that's where it all comes apart.

Strangley you win games by scoring. Defending is good  but that as such doesn't go up on the scoreboard.

What to do ??

Now some might have a good chuckle ( or just a chuck ) at what follows.  We move the magnets.

A role that Milky played was tobe the link between the two halves...as it came out of the half back through the wing or ,l occasionally the guts he was often there to mark and keep the bal lgoing to a forward...and a forward in a good scoring position ( very VERY important )

Back in the day this was pretty much what Tommy Mac would also do...Float fairly high as a HF and collect and deliver.

This is where we fall down. We need that High Half Forward type todraw the ball and in turn spot up a goal kicker

Where oh where tofind such a beast. Strangley enough he's right in front of us..A co-member of the 'failed' forward experiment. None other than Maxxy Max.  If he wasnt a ruck an independent unbiased observer might be mistaken for thinking he'd make an excellent CHF ( but not too close to goal ) In fact if we take the Dee-Goggles off for a tic  and watch, he actually does this role anyway..    He slots in somewhere on that half forward line...and marks.

Thats exactly what you want roaming along that territory...someone who 1)  Knows where to be 2) Can take a mark ( oftern in a pack ) 3) has some idea what to do with it afterwards.  Indeed if close enough have a crack....and hes been kinownto slot a few in a final...Handy !!

But ....but....but........

But what ??

You can't take Max out of the ruck......

Why Not ???... if only we had someone who could take that Role....if only we had.....     oh wait !!!

The bleedingly obvious solution is of course Grundy....  yeah... I know...only an AA Ruck...in pretty good nick   ...

That's , imho , what you do..Let Brodie ruck most of the ground .  If the ball falls forward  either Tommy or Max can take it whatever seems a better idea a that ( particular) moment

Forward structure.. the previously mentioned hot zone.   Thats gunna be Tommy's new home for the most part. He doesnt have to roamnearly as far as is HF... He knows how to mark, knows how to kick.   The other forwards..  let Frita off the leash..let him roam.. Cancel Kozzi's pilot licence...ground him... intruct to lead and crumb...and be Johnny on the spot in the forward arc creatinig mayhem..He IS very good at that. He needs a reset, a refocssing.

We need the ball to come back towards the corridor going forward.  We need someone to direct, organise thiings a bit... Someone who CAN NOT be disregarded..someone who's leads and presence MUST be heeded...Again this is MAX  ...burn him at your peril.

Keep the entries more central...   The reporting of some 'coaching' ( and that must be a very loose interpretation)  of 'clump" techniques in the pocket ....I mean wtf !!  someone has absolutley NFI if thats the case. Have we become so 'defensive' orientatated that we  have forgotten how to attack...to play forward... i.e  be brave enough to score ??

A caveat to all of this is not to crowd each other ...divide the defenders. This idea of british bulldog  forward footy...give it away...it's rubbish.   ( and more the point well worked out rubbish now )

It will be hard to keep Trac forward now I guess..  But we need to find someone(s) with flair  who can rotate through the middle and let Christian be dangerous

Do you entertain bringing Woey back and have some limited time in the guts as well as forward ...  in a fashion that's the second tier element to the problem...but any number of possibilities there.

The main one...the BIG FIX is to rejig the forward  game....and it really wouldn't take that much. Thery're all kinda there...thereabouts...    just the set up is WRONG

Let Grundy do what he is very capable of doing...and release the Max

The pairing in a fashion of Max and Brodie is , for mine...still full of potential.....  just not how it's been done to date.

We have nothing to lose..  If we keep repeating what hasnt worked....well guess what !!!

likelihood of happening....  nada

thanks for humouring me by reading.....that's my say...     now off you all go to snicker...sneeze...guffaw...

Go Dees

I am not laughing BB but I doubt the coach is that enterprising.

Cannot see anything but a Coll v Lions GF. Lions have sorted out some of their defence issues.

Too hard to beat at the Gabba. They dont lose up there.

Dees would give them a fight but we havent enough goal kickers left.

Carlton would get obliterated. Better they bow out gracefully.😄

My goodness,  I think I would almost sacrifice my first born for another crack at the Pies. Shes lucky shes a Dees fan.

They were so lucky to win. We were a good player down and subbed in a young kid with 5games.

We played half a game and only just lost. By errant kicking  too.

No ways pies are better than us.

The lions not being able to win at tge G wouldn't have been a threat.

We were so close.

This loss really hurts.

Really think it’s time to unleash Hogan and Bedford, they’ve been killing it in the twos.

Pickett needs to step up this week and make the semi final his own.

2.5 in his last 3 games and I shudder to think of the out on the fulls and the failing to make the distances.

If he pulls out a round 1 like 20 possession 4 goal game, then we’re on the plane to Brisbane next Friday.

Does BBB get one last hurrah?

Could we do something left field and have Tomilson play a defensive forward game on Weitering?

All I know is we need to start better than we have the last 2 months. If we're level with a quarter left I have no doubt we win

No

Not worthy of a new topic, however, would like to know if people think this group of players gets a bit of stage fright early in front of big hostile crowds at the G?

I know they’ve got Grand final experience (albeit at Optus) but it seems that whenever we play in front of a large MCG crowd against a another big Victorian team we start poorly.

Some recent examples:

Round 6: Richmond ANZAC eve - poor start

Round 13 - Collingwood KBD - poor start

Round 22 - Carlton - poor start

QF - Collingwood - poor start.

I know we had finals wins in 2018 but Geelong and Hawthorn crowds don’t have the same level of goading and intimidation as a Pies/Blues/Richmond crowd.

It’s game day and the Demons are chasing a fourth straight win as we take on the high flying Hawks at the G. After decades of being tormented by the Hawks the Dees will be keen to extend their 7 year dominance over Hawthorn.

  • NON-MFC: Round 09

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
