Was Weitering lucky?

Featured Replies

3000 dollars isn't much in the scheme of things.

I get that suspension in the finals is a double whammy but eye gouging is a serious thing.

Hard to determine if intentional but nonetheless he was found guilty.

Greene copped a week for the same thing a while ago.

Not lucky, just big brown bags as per usual with Carlton 😏😏

Reported it on the news all day as a scuffle between the 2, lol no mention of eye gouging, shows how dodgy the AFL is

Not lucky. He's a key Carlton player.

No way would he get suspended for a simple misunderstanding. Minnow player  Toby Bedford Aka GWS  got 1 week for rough play.

No chance a Carlton player gets suspended for rough play. Most of them a sissy bluebaggers anyway.

Carlton has had so much "luck" at the Tribunal that I think it's fair to say now that "luck" plays no part in these decisions.

There has been some ridiculous MRP and tribunal decisions this year, but this wasn't one of them.

Weitering inadvertently glanced Greene's face whilst trying to remove Greene from his headlock on McGovern. Fine was correct decision.

On the other hand Bedford was stiff. Hope he gets off on appeal.

Yes, lucky he plays for Carlton. 2022 Brownlow*

No this was probably one of the few decisions they have gotten right this year. How McCartin got off last week was bewildering

Not bewildering at all. Sydney and Carlton players will get special treatment just like Cripps late last season. Lined up and  belted a lions player causing  heavy concussion and got off.  A Dee would of got 4-6 weeks.

He didn't gouge the eyes. He made contact to the face and moved his hand away quickly and has copped a 3k fine for the mistake. Slow mo makes it look like it lingers but it does not. Move along.

It's Jacob Weitering. He doesn't have $3k!

Too soon. 😭

Reynolds your icon is class!

What the hell was McGovern doing laying there like a rag doll, trying to get a free, should have grappled Toby’s thumb and given it a twirl he would have soon let go, quite absurd really.!!!

From the footage it seems like the MRP got this one right enough as far as Weitering's brief incidental contact. Definitely not acceptable but short of a suspension I would have thought.

Meanwhile...

Toby Green had a player in an arm lock by the throat and was using that lock to drag and twist the player around after play had clearly stopped.

So for me the real story here is the verification that the 'Toby Greene good guy transformation' is a full whitewash.

Malicious, intentional, drew blood, high contact, low act: 3 weeks.

Malicious, intentional, drew blood, high contact, low act, Carlton player: Small fine.

On OTC they checked and the first offence by Green was a fine, a week later he did it again and then got suspended. So this fits that same approach.

Weitering was lucky that the fingernail that broke the skin on Toby's eyebrow didn't dig into his cornea , which could have caused longterm consequences. Most taclklers seem to avoid the eye, but  not Weiering ( or  that viscious recidivist  Judd.)

CANOATH HE WAS LUCKY same as Downlow Crypts last year!

He put his fingers deliberately in Greenes eyes and got away with it, it’s a low act and he’s extremely lucky. While Bedford’s tackle causes no injury and he misses a final. Great system.

Weitering is a big teddy bear. He even sooked it up when he ran into the fence and the Giants supporter stuck his arms up to stop clashing with him. Big sook.

  • THE STATS FILES: St. Kilda

As part of the effort to trim the runtime of the regular podcast, we’ve been looking at which segments could be reshaped without losing what makes them valuable. One segment that naturally came into focus was Binman’s Stats Files. Not because it isn’t important; quite the opposite. It’s become such a substantial and much-loved part of the show that it deserves a little room to breathe.

  • REPORT: St. Kilda

One of the big stories of the AFL off-season was the spending spree of Melbourne’s Round 1 opponent, St Kilda. They splashed out heavily, first to retain Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera - the hero of last year’s epic come-from-behind miracle victory -turning him into a $2 million man. They then effectively took out an expensive overdraft to recruit a string of expensive players from other clubs. It was a risky investment strategy and, although it’s still early days, it certainly failed to pay off in Sunday’s season opener, with much of the glitter turning to fool’s gold.
