Simon Goodwin extends contract to end of 2026

Iirc, a couple of years ago the AFL stipulated coaching contracts must include a clause that the payout is no more than 6 months, regardless of how long the contract. I might have this incorrect, but the intention was to prevent clubs having to pay out millions when they want to remove a coach where the relationship has soured. Not saying that will happen with us, but if true, goes a long way towards rendering your concerns moot

That rule only applies where the club in question is receiving special assistance from the AFL.

Will reserve judgement until after finals. We need to go deeeeep.

I judge 3 years in the top 4 and a flag. I'm 45 easily our best coach in my lifetime

Ah, yes. Thanks for clarification

Wonder if that makes it tougher for a club receiving assistance to attract a coach

That's fair enough I just hope they go and get a good forward coach who can teach the young forwards how to play that end of the ground.  Goodwin extension is not to long or short for what he has done.

Dumb idea. If he's already contracted until the end of 24 why not wait til mid 23.

12 months can be long time in football

Agree 12 months is a long time in football. It feels like mid 22 was ages ago.

unless you have a Delorean with a flux capacitor and some plutonium  don't know how it's possible to wait until mid 23.

Yes, 3 consecutive top 4 H&A seasons hasn’t been achieved by us for 60 years (and I’ll forever be grateful for seeing us win the flag), but with this list we simply must salute again.

I'll give two related reasons. Firstly, it's a mark of respect which he's earned. Secondly, and more practically, we run the risk of losing him to another club who might offer him better terms (dollars or length of contract) if we treat him poorly.

These extended contracts are great for the coach as it means a big extra payout. Not so good for the Club.

Look how its worked out for Clarkson @ Hawks & now Footscray or West Coast.

And tell me the last Premiership coach that was poached due to the contract not being long enough ???

Norm Smith - 310 with a win rate of 64.35%

Checker Hughes - 258 (61.24%)

Neale Daniher - 223 (48.65%)

John Northey - 167 (54.19)

Simon Goodwin - 134 (57.46%)

The leader for games won is Albert Chadwick who coached 58 games with a win rate of 73.28%.

This information puts Goodwin in excellent company.

Surely you have to factor in the talent they had. Imagine if in 2021 Goodie had Al Nicholson & Matt Collins in defence & Ben Beames on the bench.

The Herald Sun article about Goody’s contract extension was written by a real journalist called Glenn McFarlane.

A quick check tells me that Goodwin has coached the 5th most games for Melbourne with 134. He'll move to 4th some time in 2025. He's currently the 4th most successful in terms of games won. Here's the top 5 for games:

Norm Smith - 310 with a win rate of 64.35%

Checker Hughes - 258 (61.24%)

Neale Daniher - 223 (48.65%)

I like Goodwin, but he’s a poor man’s Albert Chadwick.

Very stable well run club. Win another flag this year and we will be a top destination club.

Everything is coming together very nicely this season.

Even ex Hawk Hodge has us as his likely premiers.

I think 23rd August 2023 would be a suitable date.

Mate, he has finished the last three years with at least a home semi in each year. We are not getting rid of him next year after one downer year, so why not extend? It’s brain dead unless you give credence to Mick Warners life work to discredit Goodwin and get him fired for being human.

great news. Particularly with that [censored] Bartlett firing away in court it was good to get behind him. Best coach we’ve had in 60 years.

There's always one. Well done, Cranks.

12 months is a long time in footy. So is 36 months, and over the last 36 months, we've finished top 4 three times.

There are always those that need something to complain about.

I think the form of JVR shows this is not an issue

And Petty pre-injury

Great news. Delighted for goody and all of us.

No surprise this was announced after a win locking in top 4 on the cusp of finals as opposed to after the GWS game in Alice after we kicked 5.15 from 75 i50 entries (worst conversion since stats ever) and lost by 2 points.😁

Awesome news! This will [censored] off the former President even more 😁

Does the current pres. have misgivings?

How good is to be such a stable, successful club!! It is great news and done with little fanfare, but with determination and a mutual regard and respect. Love it.

I am not a fan of Goodwin's media conference dead bat style, because we fans don't get much to chew on from them. Apart from this I love his style. Matter-of-fact, the players and staff love him, and he is unrelenting in his determination that defence and contested ball win premierships.

I fully understand why this re-signing was done now. With Adelaide missing finals again, the spotlight will be on Nicks whether it is deserved or not. The Crows would have begun a full-on pestering of Goodwin's manager offering everything and more. That risk has been erased.

The text messages started flooding in shortly after quarter time. One read: “Is Melbourne even at the ground?” Moments later, as Carlton’s Elijah Hollands kicked the first goal of the second term, the Blues held a commanding 43-point lead. By then, the Demons’ only score was a behind kicked by Brody Mihocek nearly five minutes into the game. Ironically, Mihocek would also register the last minor score of the day after the game took a dramatic turnaround.
