Aliir Aliir & Lachie Jones in Concussion Protocol

Yep. Trying to dodge not one but two players going into concussion protocol.
Putting Aliir back on and subbing Jones out with a “migraine”.

It is as deliberate as it gets. And all to win a bloody Showdown. Pathetic!

Like we needed another reason to hate Port Adelaide @YesitwasaWin4theAges

They have been trying to find ways to bend the rules for the last 100 years.

Port is arguably the most arrogant AFL club for a while. And i don't mean Geelong and Hawthorn arrogant because they talked the talk and walked the walk. Port have this weird sense of entitlement that is quite comical. Assume it comes from having Koche as your President and Hinkley your coach.

Not at all surprised by this really. They function in a bubble. Crom will win a flag before they do.

Didn't wear the Prison Bars for nothing. Also why they are trying so hard to get them back.

There's talk of a $50k fine out of their soft cap. If so that's light. IIRC we got a $50k fine for Harley Bennell leaving quarantine camp in 2020

It is the afls fault for leaving it in club doctors hands. They should have independent AFL appointed doctors at each game like in the NFL and NRL but I guess the AFL is too tight-fisted.

Pissweak especially considering their history

Don't forget Rozee who never got looked at after his head collected Hunters hip earlier this year. Regardless of what you think of the decision to suspend Hunter, Rozee still should have been assessed. No doubt there's other incidents.

Make the clubs pay the AFL for independent doctors at each game to adjudicate concussion protocols.

Think there was one with Kane Farrell as well.

`Ridiculous management. Surely you'd wonder if the doctor was pressured at the time.

Gee 2nd positiion is looking very achieveable.

Can the doctor be overruled?

If their doctor was overruled - he would have resigned on the spot. That goes against everything club doctors are employed for.

He has made a very large mistake here and/or maybe is one of the dinosaurs not taking head knocks seriously - in which case he shouldn't be in the AFL ranks.

It screams of negligence

Harley could have infected 7 billion people Diamond!

If it was the doctors call to not follow protocols, then isn’t this medical malpractice? And if someone overruled the doctor, is that not gross negligence from an employer?

Don’t see how someone doesn’t lose their job or end up in front of a medical board.

Received your please explain from the MBA yet Gonzo?

You forgot punctuation.  What? Was their doctor thinking?

Should have, as should the Essendon doctor.  AHPRA requires that the doctor must put their patient before their employer.

I think this is going to derail Port's season, not just from the CP to two key players, but this is a genuine scandal, it makes a lie about the Dr's reviewing footage on the sideline. Players need to be protected from themselves, I really don't care about how Alir was speaking to Ken, the test is there for a reason. Nothing less than resignation of the medical staff, no matter how much of a good bloke he is.

Nah, the AFL can fork out. Clubs are already reliant on AFL for funding anyway, take it out of the Executive's salaries.

Aliir Aliir and Lachie Jones have entered concussion protocols, with the club saying both failed SCAT5 tests today. Port Adelaide has been issued a please explain by the AFL as to why Aliir did not receive a SCAT5 test after his collision.

Looks like Mark Fisher won't be getting a pay rise anytime soon.

I have no medical expertise, but anyone could see the force of the impact between Aliir and Jones. If the AFL is serious about head injuries, Port should be fined or docked points for this fiasco. If Jones had a migraine, what was he doing on the field in the first place? And the whole world could see that for a few seconds Aliir looked as if he had taken the full force of a punch from a heavyweight boxing champion.

If the AFL permits Port to get away with this, it makes a mockery of their claim to be serious about tackling head injuries. The main factor behind the AFL protocols seems to be fear of legal liability for brain damage rather than concern for individuals.

The solution surely is to have an independent doctor present in all cases of head injury. Club doctors will always be under pressure from some maverick coaches whose overriding concern is to win matches, whatever the cost.

As a doctor, I think the management of this situation was disgraceful.

The footage, which the club doctor reviewed at the time of the incident, clearly shows both players:

* Clash heads at high speed

* Lose muscle tone

* Lack normal protective posturing while falling

* Momentarily motionless on the ground

* Appear confused and disoriented

The clear interpretation is both players have been concussed and severely enough to have briefly lost consciousness.

Both players should have been removed from the field, subjected to SCAT5 testing and - irrespective of the result - taken out of the game.

Doctors prioritising an individual’s welfare ahead of their (or their employer’s) interests is essential for good healthcare and the integrity of the medical profession.

Make the AFL provide and pay for independent doctors

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
