Don’t muck around. Go for the premium midfielder (McKercher or Duursma) with the first early pick. We’re a long-term injury or concussion retirement (Gus) away from being too thin in the engine room. Both of those two boys look classy, good decision makers too. We desperately need that.

O’Sullivan next if those two are off the board. Premiership sides are built on the bookends. They’re so hard to find and May’s got two years left in his prime.

Only after those three kids are off the board would I look at Watson.

Well said.

#5 Nick Watson
Small Forward | 24/02/2005 | 170cm | 67kg

Stats: 13 disposals, 6 marks, 1 goal

Watson spent plenty of time camped one-out inside 50 and getting under the skin of just about every Tasmanian defender. The mercurial small showcased great power when leading and leaping at the ball, playing above his size in that sense but also getting creative at ground level. There, he drew free kicks and burnt opponents with his turn of speed before delivering punchy passes by foot. After putting a couple of set shots wide, his lone goal came in the second quarter.

Our forward line with Watson added!!! Ffs.

The interest in him keeps bubbling along. Personally I don't feel like he's that much of a special or game-changing player but it is always possible I have no idea what I'm talking about.

If he is just another elite small forward, I'm not interested. But if he has the tank and traffic sense to run through the midfield and be really creative there, he could make a difference to our game from a very early point in his career.

Basically I'm asking; is Nick Watson the new Brent Harvey?

Yes, that would be terrible 🙄

Not surprised we are impressed with Watson. The question given the make up of our team is can we afford another 170cm player?  Spargo, Bowie, Laurie, Viney, Kozzie, etc.

I want a 188cm connector with good skills overhead, long, raking kicks that can earn his own ball.

That’s Sanders. Smooth mover too.

I watched Watson in a game (cant recall which one) and he was very impressive but my concern is how will he prosper in the AFL environment where everything is bigger, stronger and faster? The latter being a concern as the space he makes may disappear up a level. Is his size going to be an issue amongst more mature bodies? I genuinely don't know the answer but hold a concern. Open to any views.

i know it means little, but dudes on a train coming home from the bears' thriller was adamant we should pick him if he's available - they played underage football with him in previous years and said he does things that no other player is capable of doing

they said he and kozi would be incredible together

i imagine footscray have the same thoughts of combing watson and weightman

I'd be happy to draft him purely because I dread the thought of playing him for the next 10 years.

He's going to be a Papley/Milne/Green level antagonist.

You mean opposition players will want to deck him, and him being 170cm means that 70% of tackles will always land high?

That’s of less value now that Ginnivan messed with the high tackle rule unless you’re Nick Daicos who somehow gets the old interpretation

I've been told by someone who should know that Watson is the second best natural footballer in the pool behind Reid.  He doesn't believe his height will stop him excelling and he said if he was 6 or 7 cm's taller he'd be well and truly in the conversation for pick 1.  The same person said Melbourne are keen on pick 1 but would be happy to be in a position to draft Watson. At the moment they are not in that position.  He is of the view he's a top 5 lock. Source is a player manager but not his manager.

You don’t seem to talk to highly about Nick Watson, have you seen a lot of him playing?

I have seen quite a bit of him yes.

He has strengths and weaknesses like any other player. Absolutely rate his abilities. But two of his weaknesses are size and he has missed a lot of shots on goal.

Interesting talk of him being small. I thought in the finals Collingwood with their smalls and players in general hold the baller lower than other teams. It makes it more difficult for opposition to tackle them, draws frees, and if it becomes a ball up it plays to their strengths. That was my observation anyway.

    BOILED LOLLIES by The Oracle

In the space of a month Melbourne has gone from chocolates to boiled lollies in terms of its standing as a candidate for the AFL premiership.  The club faces its moment of truth against a badly bruised up Collingwood at the MCG. A win will give it some respite but even then, it won’t be regarded particularly well being against an opponent carrying the burden of an injured playing list. A loss would be a disaster. The Demons have gone from a six/two win/loss ratio and a strong percentag

CLEAN HANDS by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed into town and up Sydney Road to take on the lowly Coburg Lions who have been perennial VFL easy beats and sitting on one win for the season. Last year, Casey beat them in a practice match when resting their AFL listed players. That’s how bad they were. Nobody respected them on Saturday and clearly not the Demons who came to the game with 22 players (ten MFC), but whether they came out to play is another matter because for the most part, their intensity was lacking an

    ALAS SPRINGS by Whispering Jack

I got the word on Saturday from someone who knows someone inside the Fremantle camp that the Dockers were pumped and supremely confident about getting the W the next day against Melbourne at TIO Traeger Park in the red heart of the country. I was informed that the Dockers were extremely confident for a number of reasons. They had beaten the Demons on their home territory at the MCG at their last two meetings so they didn’t see beating them at Alice Springs as a problem. They belie

    TROUBLE by The Oracle

Situated roughly in Australia's geographic centre, Alice Springs has for many years been a troubled town suffering from intermittent crime waves, particularly among its younger residents. There was a time a little while ago when things were so bad that some even doubted the annual AFL game in the town would proceed.  Now, the hope is that this Sunday’s Melbourne vs Fremantle encounter will bring joy to the residents of the town and that through the sport and the example of the participants,
