Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

The reality is the game is opening up and players with speed and evasiveness are worth their weight in gold

Problem is the game moves quickly and could just as equally be about bigger bodied, slower players that can win the contest in 2 years time.

I generally like the look of Watson though, irrespective of height.

Not sure about that

Players would be more likely to be wearing bike helmets and the game renamed to Touch Footy in two years

He sprayed it a bit in that GF but he's one touch at full fast pace and has a good side step. He'll do damage.

As I read your post I was transported back to the early ‘90’s when I was at my peak.

Ball on string. 💪🤣

You wouldn’t have happened to tape any of your games by any chance @McQueen? Always good fun watching quality players going about their business!

Only on private video mate.
I was an honest inside player and occasional thug spare defender when games were tight.

I've been told by someone who should know that Watson is the second best natural footballer in the pool behind Reid.  He doesn't believe his height will stop him excelling and he said if he was 6 or 7 cm's taller he'd be well and truly in the conversation for pick 1.  The same person said Melbourne are keen on pick 1 but would be happy to be in a position to draft Watson. At the moment they are not in that position.  He is of the view he's a top 5 lock. Source is a player manager but not his manager.

Great insight Swooper.

Think the doggies moving up ahead of us puts a damper on things.

Intrigued to see how this all plays out.

I’m not basing this on anything other than gut feel, but I can’t help but think that if WC don’t budge on pick 1 we’ll turn our focus to NM’s Pick 3 in an effort to snag Watson.

I like the look of Watson as well as Reid. Bulldogs will take Watson at 4 unfortunately for us if we miss out on Reid..

If North take Duursma (strong chance if they don’t get pick 1) Hawks are tipped to pivot to Watson. Dogs probably then select Sanders. Given they had Watson in mind when they traded up, would be slightly disappointing for them (but think Sanders would be a good fit with Dogs mids - Smith aside- getting on slightly).

Certainly looking like Curtin is going to be the player left for us at pick 6.

Assuming we can't get up any higher, I wonder if the club will take him there or have a different player in the mix like Caddy or O'Sullivan.

I would be more than happy with Curtin.

If Hawks get Ginnivan then not sure they will get Watson so I think he goes to the Doggies. I am a massive Watson fan and have seen a bit of him this year and would love to pick him up as I think he is an upgrade on all of our smalls .Would be an excitement machine like Jackovich or Jurrah where fans are up off seats when he is near the ball.

I would be really disappointed if we went for O’Sullivan first. Not our immediate need now while the window is still slightly open. May for me was our player of the finals and we can think of replacing him in a few years time. We need pace, skill in our midfield to front half.

If we don’t trade up for Reid and Watson is on the board at our then he’s probably best available at our pick and we would have to really consider him. I wasn’t in favour of getting another small forward on but he has won me over.
Kossie and him would be a nightmare for other teams defences. Even with his small frame I’d expect him to have a big impact at AFL level next year.
If Kossie continues to spend more time in the middle then it would make even more sense.
I do agree with others that we would want to have another top 10 pick to draft for needs with our second one.

I fancy Watson coming out of the midfield - if his speed is good - as his recoveries are impressive; it would still allow him to come forward (eyes up) on occasion for some great disposals and even for those cameo, deep-forward tricks that have been his imprint on footy so far. Did we note his handballing expertise?

Perhaps, memory flashes of Greg Wells come to mind, playing out of the centre and into the width and depth of the forward line with disposal excellence, discouraging the long-bomb syndrome. This is how I would have liked to see Oliver and Tracca used more frequently over the recent past - with whom he would combo rather well - should our Coach see its relevance to improve our game, all game. Remember '...bang, bang, bang. Bang.' ? That novel approach won us a GF.

Reid, McKercher, Duursma or Watson is your man then.

If we're going to the draft to replace May it needs to be now so there's enough development time. With Petty almost certainly leaving soon we need KPs. I hope we take Curtin or O'Sullivan.

Watson is a good player, but whether he can continue his good form into the AFL is a risk I'd not take.  Regardless, I don't think we need another small forward with Kozzi, Chandler, Spargo and McAdam.  Even if we manage to move up the draft order we should let Watson slide to Bulldogs where I think he will end up anyway.

Zane Duursma and Daniel Curtin should be our primary pick if Harley Reid is already taken.  Pick 11 is the interesting one depending on who is still available and who of the above we already chose.

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

The Casey Demons have been left languishing near the bottom of the VFL table after suffering a 32-point defeat at the hands of stand alone club Williamstown at Casey Fields on Sunday. The Demons suffered a major setback before the game even started when AFL listed players Ben Brown, Marty Hore and Josh Schache were withdrawn from the selected side. Only Schache was confirmed as an injury replacement, the other two held over as possible injury replacements for Melbourne’s Thursday night fixt

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
