It's why it's a [censored] award.  No player nominated after rd8 usually wins. Good players often don't get nominated because only 1 player per round can be nominated

Its fluff. Don't worry about it. He's ours. Be happy about that

    My sense of the award is when an eligible player plays a great game, he gets nominated. When there are no outstanding candidates from the round, they'll award it to a player who has been consistently good over a few weeks or more. I think McVee's on the Mr Consistency list.

    It’s stupid that he hasn’t been nominated but it’s because nominations go to stand out performances and Judd’s been stunningly consistent without necessarily destroying a game. 

    He deserves one before the year is out. Hopefully he can snag one.

    He's an excellent kid with a long and bright future at AFL level, but he doesn't play 'standout' games or a role that draws attention.

    The Rising Star award is about hype, and Judd McVee isn't about hype.

    Most years it appears that nominations are awarded in the last few rounds of the season to eligible players for their body of work throughout the year. McVee should pick up a nomination before the end of the year on that basis. But being realistic, he's no chance to win over players like Ashcroft and Sheezel.

    Doesn't need a rising star nomination to justify how much of an absolute gun he is.

    Here's the thing with the rising star award.  Neither Dane Swan, Gary Ablett Jnr or Jonathon Brown ever received a nomination.  That tells me all I need to know about it, and the people who judge it.

    I’d like to see the Rising Star award scrapped altogether. Why create such a trivial distraction amongst a group of players who are all just trying to find their feet? Sure, there are particularly high-achieving players amongst them, but if they’re genuinely special they’ll win a club B&F or Brownlow one day. Until then they’re just players in a squad like any other.

    Disagree. An award celebrates the achievement of young players, why scrap that? Each week after the nomination when the player gets a bit of media time the public gets a chance to know them better. I doubt there is any distraction of consequence in this. I love the award, love the weekly nomination and hope that taj lands one in coming weeks off the back of a brilliant effort game!
    (Love Judd too, if he kept Cameron goalless this week and had 15 touches and some strong defensive numbers, I’d lobby hard for his nomination)

    The award for young players is being signed to an AFL squad. 

    But if you love it, that’s great. Personally have never understood the point of highlighting the achievements of a particular sub-set of players, except to pad-out Brownlow night. If anything, I’m far more interested in players who still impress deep into their career, but I still don’t see it as necessary to create an award for them.

    I think the other side to it all for me is hope. Since winning a flag it’s easy to forget how it used to be but I remember the joy of Jesse hogan winning for the brightness of the future it created. Recent father sons have fudged things a little but often a rising star comes from a high draft pick, which usually means it’s attached to a club with little else to celebrate.  I can understand the disinterest, but on dark days you take what you can get.

    Also Bowey, Rivers, JVR, Woey, Howes, Kozzy, Sparrow, Jefferson, Turner D, Adams, Turner K, Verrall, Laurie, JJ and more young players, all 23 and under, with good draft picks in hand to get more young talent this year

    How many players have won a Brownlow without getting a 3 voter in the first 9 rounds? 

    How many players have won a Best and Fairest without getting full votes in the first 9 rounds?

    There's usually 20-30 eligible players in each round, of which at most 5 are genuine contenders for the award. Guys who play high level footy throughout the season. 

    This year the genuine contenders are Sheezel, Ashcroft, Owens, Amiss and for me Michalanney. All 5 have been above average players for the majority of the season and played stand out games. It's no surprise they were nominated early. McVee hasn't been on that level.

    By the way, the 3 guys nominated later all played down back. You can build a resume by playing really good footy as a defender without stand out games to get the award. A forward or a mid is going to have the easy stats to get nominated. There's almost no way to kick 30-40 goals and win the award as a forward without grabbing an early nomination. Same for a mid who averages 20+ touches.

    I used to care about this stuff when we where perennial cellar dwellers.

    It was a sign of hope and that we had a bright future. Couldn't care less now, sure it's recognition of a good game by a young player but I would bet Mcvee is stoked being a regular in a top 4 team and a rising star nom is not a concern for him.

     

    Jordan gysberts got 2 noms & Lewis Taylor won the award so it's a bit of a nothing

    And yet Jed Adams and Matt Jefferson are lower odds to win the Rising star award according to the TAB.

    Infact McVee isn’t even listed on the market.

    Even Corey Wagner was recently  listed in the rising star market until someone had to point out to them that he was 6 years too old to win the award.

    Regardless, he’s having a sensational rookie AFL season.

    As a rule of thumb, winning anything as a defender other than frees against, is an uphill battle.
    Rivers must be the only defender to win this award.

    Perhaps it is the same as the Bronlow stuff, midfielder award, or for a forward who kicks a bag. 

    A role playing backman who negates the most difficult position in footy (small half forward), isn't going to do much for the pundits to get excited by. He has been so consistent and at times eye catching. Great start to his career.

    I hope Woey plays some great games out of the mid position, and gets a nomination. Not for nomination sake, but for the fact he continues to build his game and stays in the team.

    I think nominations for rising star, is a good feather in the cap for the drafting committee.

    I'd have Chandler amoung the more players there, but agree that it's a great sign for continued success moving beyond the core of 2021 premiership players.

    Judd has probably been our biggest positive for the year. A pleasure to watch. Speed and smarts wrapped in silk

    Salem's return to form is a distant second.

      There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
