GAMEDAY: Rd 08 vs Gold Coast

This game day thread is a great reminder of why I donโ€™t often read the game day thread.

Itโ€™s ok to acknowledge the competition is tough, and we are a big scalp. Have some faith.ย

ย

Boy so much nashing of teeth going on here, its not a bad game, GC up for the fight.

ย

We're a team of corrallers and smotherers. Gone is the tough pressure footy of 2021.

Contested possessions and clearance numbers are ugly. We wonโ€™t be happy with that.ย

When have we looked on?ย
we have been underperforming since round 11 last year and itโ€™s starting to get frustratingย

This is peak โ€œgameday threadโ€.ย

But GC is a very limited team, once we were 20 points up you'd expect the team to sustain the pressure and don't let them score big.

Our backline is a worry this season , a long cry from its best from from 2021 - 2022. Heck even 2020 we looked more solid in defence.

ย

Midfield is getting rolled.ย

Forwards pretty efficient.

We'll step it up this quarter.

Getting rolled in the stoppages, and their ripping through the guts on the turnover or from the contest is the standard โ€˜how to beat Melbourneโ€™ model. If they improve their disposal efficiency, they win. If we defend the run-off from the contest better (havenโ€™t done this well against anyone) and improve stoppage possession/control, we win.

Their midfield is good

We are so lucky to be in front.

Less kicks, marks and clearances.ย

Slow to the contest and fumbly without pressure is quite disconcerting.

Petty needs to go back. He's not a forward. Turner is lost out there and he's not getting much support.

Fritta might want to decide to get into the game.

We can't keep playing this. Our mids are getting spanked.

im sorry, if you're a premiership contender, you are not giving the the opposition a sniff.

They beat Premiers Geelong a few weeks ago.ย  Geelong gave them more than a sniff. Geelong are still favourites this year.

Melbourne are in front.ย  You can complain if they dont run over them in the next half.

allowing to many GC players to run free, we always have trouble with teams that do that. We are lucky their disposal rate is not higher or we would be behind. we just dont know how to handle sides the run with the ball. Collingwood, Essendon and even Brisbane do it and we just dont cover the player running past, free players ahead, etc. I expect we will win, but so far not a very impressive performance that could very easily turn into a loss. where is the skill and precision we saw a part of at least against north.

7 points up at half time - our season is shotโ€ฆ

Precisely, out system only works with pressure from the forwards and mids, which is severely lacking. We'll get smashed by Collingwood and lose a heap more gamesย  this year if we don't lift the tackling intensity.ย

Remember Gold coast beat geelong earlier in the season.

Everytime we get out to a good lead we let them back in.ย

A lot of players need to lift. We can't rely on Max to be everywhere & bail us out all the timeย

Opposition having a real crack,we won't need to drop off. Chandler despite his goal Langdon and Fritsch need to get into the game.

ย

Getting SMACKED at the contest. Dig in and weโ€™ll cruise away in the second half.

Fritta needs to hit the scoreboard and keep his streak alive.

Gold Coast with 22 more contested possessions when was the last time a side did that to us I expect a change this quarterย

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

Itโ€™s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle โ€“ perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
