Once again, the AFL clubs get a chance to replenish their lists through the year with the 2023 AFL Mid-Season Rookie Draft to be held late next month.

It was reported by Cal Twomey on SEN that there are seven clubs that currently have vacancies available for the 2023 Midseason Draft*:-

Hawthorn
GWS Giants
FremantleĀ
GeelongĀ
RichmondĀ
Western BulldogsĀ
Essendon

(* - I’ve placed them in reverse order to their current positions)

OtherĀ clubs can be added to the draft if they have players eligible to be placed on their long term injury lists.Ā

One player mentioned by Twomey as a likely draftee is 203cm Eastern Ranges ruckman Clay Tucker.

So I take it we can draft Harley Reid

Not yet (if at all).

These rules are for the midseason draft.

With the ā€œNO VACANCYā€ sign up at Melbourne, there’s little interest in this year’s MSD.

Full list: 2023 AFL Mid-Season Draft nominees

A few former Demons on the list including Oscar McDonald and five current Casey listed players in Paddy Cross, Finn Emile-Brennan, George Grey, Roan Steele andĀ Ryan Valentine and some ex-Casey players and that’s about it.

Ā

After watching a handful of VFL games this year, the 5 players I think are AFL worthy are:

Mitch HoreĀ

George GreyĀ

Trent Mynott

Luke Teal

Nick Shipley

Teal especially was unlucky not to be drafted last year and has had a good year so far for the Tigers VFL team. He’s one to definitely get picked up imv Ā Ā

Ā

Deadline is Tuesday before the draft on Wednesday.

Who’s retiring? Brown, Melksham, McDonald, Hunter, Dunstan?

Surely big Vitzmagic goes on the Long term injury list. Jefferson could have an extra 4 months in the gym rather than a string of more 4 touch games.

Is our pro scout still banking cheques despite not finding a good mature age pick up since Vanders?

I think you were meant to think this DS, not post it....!

You don’t think we should take a gamble on a player on Wednesday and help turnover a list that’s got a lot of veterans that aren’t up to it?

I wouldn’t want to waste the chance to have a look at a fresh player.Ā

Can’t help but feel that we should have made sure we were somehow involved in the MSD. We have a few on the list who look done and unlikely to play a part in future campaigns and should have been trying to do what Collingwood have managed with the likes of Noble and Johnson who have seamlessly come in virtually straight out of the MSD and made them a better team.

I simply don't understand the logic of using our last list spot on Kye Turner instead of holding it over to the MSD. He's not filling an area of great need, he was never going to push for senior selection this year, and it has taken away the opportunity for us to have a look at some decent prospects over the past three months.

As an aside, I'd love to see Oscar get another chance, whether it be in Sydney or elsewhere.

Agree.

Oscar McDonald of on our list would have played games on our fwd line this yearĀ

and that is how bad our tall fwds are going

Presumably they think he might have gone by our msd pick and they see a future for him. We haven’t really seen much as he has been injured. Would you say the same about Verrall?

BothĀ Oscar McDonald and MartyĀ Hore look like getting another chance tonight. Oscar going to Sydney will be interesting, they have a history of redeveloping players and a spot in the backline for him.Ā

Somewhat soberingĀ

I know were not in the draft so it's a moot point but Marty Hore's doing well and is up there in the VFL coaches votes. We could've done worse than have another look at him.

O Mac would've been a good option to support Lever and May assuming they've totally given up on Tomlinson.

AGREE.

Despite the rumours, neither were selected in tonight's draft.

They both must feel frustrated at being so close but still not on an AFL list.

I feel for both of them. Hore looked so good for us, and then had injuries wipe out 2 years of his career. He was probably the best player in the VFL when we grabbed him. He’s had no luck.
