AFL legend shares his concerns on a mid-season trade

I feel sick saying this but I agree with Bevo on this.  He gave his views on 360 on Monday night I think it was.  He says the season is a war of atrition and there shouldn't be a way to correct holes in a teams list midway through it, even if those holes are caused by injury.  The mid season draft can only do so much because a team is very unlikely to get a season changing player from it.  So big no for me.

No from me too. The strong sides will pick the eyes out of the weaker clubs and we’ll end up with some clubs not tanking but putting in some very ordinary performances late in the season. Just the sort of thing that can skew ladder positions if you happen to be drawn against some of those weaker teams late in the season.

I don't like it.

I heard someone on the radio yesterday saying something along the lines of the AFL being more mature when they bring it in.

I hate this type of argument...that and the one about change and not being stuck in the past.

Somethings in the past were good and in fact more mature.

I think it's immature to raise these kinds of stupid arguments.

No way. Look at the NBA's mid-season trade period where the star players play musical chairs in search of a playoff ring, often leaving their team high and dry. The NBA is more mature thsn the AFL and the mid-season trade sucks there. I can't see that it would be that different in the AFL.

I wouldn't mind Freo's 2024 1st for Tom McDonald though

Nope. Teams can't trade more than 1 draft year ahead. Which is unfortunate for us when dealing with  Freo!

Mmmm don’t like it mainly because the justification to bring it in, based on injuries, is just a bad argument. 
 

If the argument is: ‘have a mid season draft to fix list deficiencies caused by injury’ then  what about what’s just happened to the Eagles in this round? 10 years from now they could easily say ‘hey we implemented a mid season trade period to address a situation like this, we’ve just lost 5 of our starting 22 in a week! It’s not fair that our entire season is screwed because of injury and the mid season draft is months away’ Why not have 2 season trade periods? Why not 3? Just leave it up to the clubs when they want to trade? That way, no clubs have to have their season ruined because of injury.

It’s the exact same argument (the Eagles case is probably stronger than what McCrae is arguing) and they have more need to be able to trade now than Collingwood will mid-season.

I’d also hate to be in a constant cycle of leading up to trade periods. Every week there would be discussions about which teams should go after which players etc. etc. etc.

I understand your point about the ring-chasing and instability for some clubs’ supporters (look at the Nets this year) but it is a heap of fun and undeniably increases interest in the sport.

 

It will happen in the AFL, I would put my house on it. The one thing they need to put in place prior is a lottery-draft pick system (which will also happen) - you can’t have a mid-season trade period before it because the tanking would be nek level.

"An important player got injured. I should be ALLOWED to replace them! (You may note I didn't scream and shout about this when our rival's important player got injured.)"

"Our recruiters and list management got the balance wrong. We need another small forward/KPD/ruckman/whathaveyou. We should be ALLOWED to fix that and not live with the consequences of our actions."

I WANT IT. I WANT IT. I WANT IT. IT'S NOT FAIR.

The coaches' collective track record of making changes to the game is not inspiring.

They don't know what's good for the game. They only know what's good for them, right now today. And that could change tomorrow.

They are the last people who should be "contributing" to the rules of the game.

Nope from me. McCrae can work his way through without a ruckman. That's why he is paid the big bucks to coach.

Someone needs to gag Barrett.  He comes up with more hairbrained ideas than Eddie Everywhere.  Two idiotic ideas one one week from Barrett, first the idea of the SA showdown at the MCG, and now this.  He's got no idea....

Scenario in which I think this won't work as below:

Player A is badly out of form, team decides that there is a better option in the draft, team puts player on long-term injury list and send him off for some surgery that really didn't need to be done now, team then picks up better option in the draft.

How is this better for the game?

Too many drafts. Scrap the idea but its unlikely because TV commentators need something to babble about when they have nothing else to say. TV owns Tricky Gill.

The media only want it because trade news articles get the most clicks. 
AFL journalism is a profit based business. 

Image the year long speculation about players moving clubs with two transfer windows instead of one, it will be a nightmare. 
 

If Collingwood want it, it will happen. Imagine if we asked for it?  The response will be go to far Kew.

I hate the idea, but seems as though Goody wants it, which surprises me. 

Not a Fan at all. Get your list management sorted in October/November. 
The Filth stuffed up and now want other Clubs to take the Burden. 
They realize how good Brodie still is.

Don't quite understand how it helps replace injured player X  if X is retained on the list and no salary cap relief.

The existing mid season draft is a last chance saloon for non AFL players. That makes sense.

Some more detail would be good

I just think they need to go through to the logical conclusion and have an in season trade window from say rounds 1-15 and then some capacity to sign free agents and release players via pay out as well. the more capacity to move and shake your list on the run i think the better for all teams 

In our case i'm sure we'd love to sign another ready to go ruckman and probably have some mids who might not get much of a look who could be best 22 elsewhere 

I'm sure there was a player who was traded mid-season back in the early 80s who ended up playing against the same opponents two weeks in a row.
