Judd McVee Signs Extension until 2025

DEMON IN LINE FOR EXTENSION

Melbourne has started talks with defender Judd McVee and is poised to extend the rookie's contract after an impressive debut against the Western Bulldogs in round one.

McVee, who was recruited with pick No.16 in the 2022 NAB AFL Rookie Draft, has shown significant promise since joining the Demons alongside fellow West Australians Jacob Van Rooyen and Taj Woewodin.

The East Fremantle product played 19 games for Melbourne's VFL team last year and was part of its premiership, graduating to the AFL backline against the Bulldogs, where he did not look out of place.  A two-year deal would likely see the 19-year-old move off a rookie contract by his fourth season.

Melbourne has been pleased with the skilful West Australian's ability to defend opposition small forwards while also providing bounce from the backline.

Once rated an early draft prospect after earning All Australian selection at the NAB AFL Under-16 Championships, he has been mentored by premiership defender Christian Salem. – (Nathan Schmook)

When he was drafted I likened McVee to Salem as footy IQ and skills were noted among his assets.  It is great to see Salem now mentoring him.

Just came across this article:  judd-mcvee-mcg-debut-melbourne-demons-family

Quite a realistic view from his father about being in and out of the team.

This comment from him caught my eye: "Christian Salem took over his development, Steven May has been huge for him as well and Jake Lever was pretty good there, so he learnt a lot in his first year," he said.  That support extended on to the field, Mr McVee said, with Dees midfield leader Angus Brayshaw providing a crucial boost on the day".

Interesting that Gus is referred to as our midfielder leader - I guess he takes some of the workload off Lever to marshall the midfielders defensively, especially in May and Salem's absence.

The words of a very proud dad:  "There's a photo of him with the ball tucked under his arm and he's just smiling, running down the middle of the G, it's awesome," he said.

Great news.

In a way he's still quiet raw but hes a natural footballer. Some may have different opinion but I thought he actually did a pretty good job on Cameron.

I remember you being a fan of Lockhart Daz, do you see similarities?

My read of the article is that we will sign him on the same basis as Chandler and Turner:  two years with the first (2024) as a rookie then promote him to the senior list in 2025.

Very impressed with his first and third games of his career, and was spoken about as a rough chance of getting a Rising star nomination for round 3.

Speaking of the AFL rising star award winner, you can't even put a bet on him on the TAB but yet you can get $151 for Corey Wagner (ex Dee) to win the rising star award despite being 5 years too old to be eligible.

Think you're confused with Corey Warner from Sydney.

It's absolutely Corey Wagner from Freo, listed as $151. Can't believe they've got a 26 year old in the rising star market.

Either the TAB have complete incompetence working for them or they're trying to rip the public off with bogus betting options.

Yeah that is a big no-no.

Lever mentioned in the post game interview after round 1 that if someone told him  last year that Judd would be playing round 1 this year he'd think they were joking. The mountain of work he's put in during the off-season and impact training must have been immense.

Hopefully, his trajectory continues like the Sparrows and Jordans.

Love that Salem took him under his wing. Certainly shows similar composure, competitiveness and ball use.

The depth we now have across the whole team in each position is incredible.

Good overhead, quick, go ahead ball carrier, nice sidestep which buys him space and time, and generally composed ball use.

Just what we've been waiting for in our back 6 mix.

A best 22 lock. May need a rest at some point.

Great rookie pick by Jason Taylor and co.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
