His set shot reminded me of Gunston's (not the Norman version). Smooth and straight

    Disp looked good in play. Loved the smother he did on the half fwd boundary, showed excellent pressure.

    Thick, muscley build, which a med fwd prob cannot sustain, perhaps needs to drop a few kg to build a tank.

    A project player with potential (as much as I dislike that phrase)

    I don't think we should drop McD at all. His body work helps the other forwards and he's back up for defence. Just don't put him in the ruck.

    Sorry Tmac is now too slow, doesn't get much of the footy, time to change direction regarding CHF, he has been a great servant but time to on back up only.

    Just watched the game. Impressed with Laurie deserves another crack at it maybe as a sub. Moniz-Wakefield is exciting and Jefferson's marking was exciting. van Rooyen has to debut this week great game by him.

    Went along to the game yesterday and was quite an enjoyable one to watch.  Was happy for my concerns about their pre-season form to be put to bed.  Once the real stuff started and they were playing at home, it was back to regular viewing.

    Given the games are now streamed and everyone can watch them I don't really feel the need to do one of my old break downs of all the Melbourne listed players, but just a couple of observations from the day.

    1. I think Casey have found themselves a player in Miles Shepherd.  I know he debuted back in 2021, but this is the first time I've ever really noticed him and I thought both he along with Kye Turner and Hibberd gave Casey plenty of run and rebound off half back.

    2. Bacon & Egg rolls were gone from the menu.  Well they were on the menu, but not available.  I hope this never happens again!

    3. Based off today, I hold some hope for Josh Schache that he can still have value at AFL level.  Won't ever be a star, but he showed some real signs today.  Shame he got concussed.

    4. They need to find a way to get Van Rooyen games at Senior level this year.  I really like what I saw from him today.  The way he launches himself at the football and an ability to just hang in the air when at the height of his jump.  Kid will be something!

    Kye Turner was the big surprise for me.

    Haven't not seen him play before he was impressive giving drive and dash off half back. He certainly drills the footy low and flat as well.

    Keeps his form up and he could potentially debut this year.

    Hopefully Jvr gets a run even if it's as an activated sub. We really need some more marking power in the team.

    CASEY’S NEW CAMPAIGN by KC from Casey

    The Casey Demons unfurled their 2022 premiership flag early on Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields and commenced their campaign to earn the honour of back to back champions in 2023. They did so emphatically beating Footscray by 37 points in a contest they dominated throughout and, but for some wayward kicking for goal early in the piece, they could have determined the issue a lot earlier in the day than during the final term when the Dogs finally hit the wall.

    The Demons were forced to make changes to the selected side with Jake Melksham and Adam Tomlinson in Brisbane and Daniel Turner also out. Trent Burgoyne, Max Gregory and Miles Shepherd came into the side to replace them leaving 14 AFL listed players in the side.

    Last week against the same club, Casey was listless and struggled to score. This time, the game was played in near perfect conditions with just a slight breeze but the Demons were struggling to find the middle of the big sticks.

    James Jordon and Luke Dunstan held sway in the clearance battles but the forwards were missing some easy shots at goal, as reflected in the quarter time score line. The trend continued early in the second term with a couple of behinds added to the score before Josh Schache, Jordon and Dunstan found the goals opening up a 26-point lead. A late Bulldog revival narrowed the margin back to 8 points at half time.

    Michael Hibberd was in everything during the second term, Bailey Laurie was coming into his own and Josh Schache was putting his hand up for the likely vacancy caused by the injury to Max Gawn at Melbourne. There were some hints of future forward line strength through Jacob van Rooyen and newcomers Matt Jefferson and Oliver Sestan. Jefferson was winded and came off temporarily after taking a great mark.

    The Doggies came hard early in the second half but Casey’s class came to the fore and a flurry of goals to the home team including two in quick succession to Sestan saw them off to a handy three quarter time lead which was stretched to 37 by the final siren. 

    Sestan finished with three goals while Schache and Andy Moniz-Wakefield scored two each in their team’s impressive start to the season.

    Hibberd was the star with 36 disposals and 10 marks. Other strong performers were Dunstan with 29 disposals, seven clearances and a goal, Laurie with 27 possessions and four tackles and Jordon (25 touches, 2 goals). 

    Schache took a knock to the head and was off after the final break and if cleared of concussion, is a good chance for Melbourne against Sydney on Sunday. Note however, that Schache did not take the ruckwork in this game.

    Jacob van Rooyen continues to promise to become a potential point of difference at AFL level with his enthusiasm, leap and versatility. He finished with 19 disposals, 11 marks, six hitouts and a goal and surely must get his chance soon?

    James Munro was again a tower of strength amassing 16 tackles while Max Gregory made an excellent 20 touch debut in these ranks.

    Next week, the Demons play host to the strong Sydney side with an early start at 11:00am on Sunday.

    Poor Oliver Sestan.  He has morphed into "Seston" and now "Seaton".  

    We did have a player called Phil Seaton at one point.  No relation as far as I know.

    Do we know if Schache actually failed a concussion test or was he just taken off in the last quarter for precautionary for next week?

    We got beaten up around the clearances against Brisbane and Sydney will be similar. We need to find away to get this clearance bull into the team. I think Harmes makes way for him. Harmes only had 3 kicks for the game on Friday night.

    I remember Phil Seaton going around. Half forward, ruck-rover. Not a bad player. Hot competition for spots. Healy, Kelly O'Donnell, Greg Hutchison and Tony Elshaug, were all young and helped make up the backbone of the side for the next five years. Took over No. 15 from Stan Alves.

    A question for '@DeeSpencer' and '@dazzledavey36'....over the last few seasons I've made comment on the low possession stats across the board at Casey.

    ....but in this game they've jumped up significantly.

    Is there a change in game plan? was the previous stats person visually challenged?

    Is there a trend here?

    Serious question here guys, despite the remark on the stats taker.

      There was a time during the current Melbourne cycle that goes back to before the premiership when the club was the toughest to beat in the fourth quarter. The Demons were not only hard to beat at any time but it was virtually impossible to get the better them when scores were close at three quarter time. It was only three or four years ago but they were fit, strong and resilient in body and mind. Sadly, those days are over. This has been the case since the club fell off its pedestal about 12 months ago after it beat Geelong and then lost to Carlton. In both instances, Melbourne put together strong, stirring final quarters, one that resulted in victory, the other, in defeat. Since then, the drop off has been dramatic to the point where it can neither pull off victory in close matches, nor can it even go down in defeat  gallantly.

      At twenty-four minutes into the third term of the game between the Casey Demons and Footscray VFL at Whitten Oval, the visitors were coasting. They were winning all over the ground, had the ascendancy in the ruck battles and held a 26 point lead on a day perfect for football. What could go wrong? Everything. The Bulldogs moved into overdrive in the last five minutes of the term and booted three straight goals to reduce the margin to a highly retrievable eight points at the last break. Bouyed by that effort, their confidence was on a high level during the interval and they ran all over the despondent Demons and kicked another five goals to lead by a comfortable margin of four goals deep into the final term before Paddy Cross kicked a couple of too late goals for a despondent Casey. A testament to their lack of pressure in the latter stages of the game was the fact that Footscray’s last ten scoring shots were nine goals and one rushed behind. Things might have been different for the Demons who went into the game after last week’s bye with 12 AFL listed players. Blake Howes was held over for the AFL game but two others, Jack Billings and Taj Woewodin (not officially listed as injured) were also missing and they could have been handy at the end. Another mystery of the current VFL system.

      Wayward kicking for goal, dump kicks inside 50 and some baffling umpiring all contributed to the Dees not getting out to an an early lead that may have impacted the result. At the end of the day the Demons were just not good enough and let the Hawks run away with their first win against the Demons in 7 years.
