I'm just all round happy for the guy. He's someone who has not been handed anything to him and worked his butt off. His ability to chase, tackle and get scoring opportunities was a big part of what kept us in this game. 

His goals were all quality goals when it mattered, those moments needed someone who would step up and take responsibility which he did. Good small forwards do damage with few opportunities.

    I remember watching Kade after our Granny win hugging Jake Lever, he was crying and I remember thinking jeez this kid is really invested, he played a pearler in the Casey Granny and is now producing the goods at AFL level. If he can maintain his current form he will be an automatic lock in the 23, he is young and relatively inexperienced but you wouldn’t know it. He helped keep us in the game Monday night, really starting to like this kid. Go Kade Chandler.!!!

    I've been a fan of Chandler for a while now (when many others at least on here were not).  While I'm not super surprised with his inside 50 tackles stats (6th in the league) or his goal assists (3rd in the league) I didn't expect him to be so reliable in front of goal.  Chandler is playing one of the most important and difficult roles in the team and couldn't be going much better.  Good story of persistence - he has one injury away from being a premiership player in 2021 and then Bedford had his nose in front last year. I'm so glad we hung on to him and he stayed on!

    Reminds me of previous left foot opportunistic swooper like half forwards like our Tunbridge in the 50s and 60s and our former coach swooper Northey. Knows how to find space, where the goals are and doesn't waste his chances.

    Great observations. The club has done some wonderful recruitment and investment in Rivers, Mcvee, Bowey, Jvr and Chandler. 5 players who probably have the collective total games of less than maybe 60 odd.

    Very happy with his development.

    Whilst Richmond aren't the powerhouse they once were, to kick 3 goals and lay that important tackle on Vlaustin on the big stage in front of 84,000 is a massive performance and a good sign ahead that he could step in September.

    His physical presence for his size is a great attribute. Still remember his debut, thumped by the Swans but Kade had 9 tackles that game, equal most with Jack Viney. 

    Obviously covid impacted his development but happy he's forced his way into the team and now finding goals after a few blanks in previous seasons.

    Once the Kosi deal is done, we have to move onto signing him up.

    He is a very smart operator, great goal sense, faster than you think, and a real team player. 

    Will allow Kosi more midfield minutes as well.

    You are right in a sense.  I haven't been keeping much of an eye on Casey, but I can assure you that there is Buckley's chance Kade will loose his spot to Dunstan even if Dunstan might get 100 possessions.

    Kade is our second highest goal kicker this season, plays with great pressure, intensity and team first attitude and yet he's at risk of loosing his spot in the side to anyone - yeah sure.

    Maybe Clayton Oliver or Jack Viney might get ommited for Luke Dunstan since they play his position? 🤔

    Kade has an intensity that burns bright. For AFL that’s a gift that not all possess for 4Q. Sure he has good skills but it’s that intensity and enthusiasm that makes hum an AFL player and a player that coaches and fans love. It would have been a crime to let him go to the Crows or anywhere else. He’s a bloody beauty.

    Spargo is going nowhere. He’s our best pressure forward by a mile according to all the champion data stats and kicked 6 goals in 4 games prior to his concussion. We can play the 3 smalls as one will push up the ground, it worked prior to last week. Laurie would probably make way for him and potentially could be a sub to get him back into the team

    They will probably rotate them up the field as spargo and koz do look really damaging kicking into f50 they are both great users of the ball. It’s a good dilemma to have!

    Love this bloke. He epitomises everything about hard work and never giving up. 

    I was worried we were going to lose him by keeping him in the 2s, but has taken his spot in the 22 and doesn’t look like giving it up.


    He is a very good offensive weapon.

    Loved how his game has developed.

    I wonder if Bedford is looking at Chandler cementing himself in the 22 and thinking that could have been him, injury notwithstanding. 

    His move has probably worked out well for both of them.

    Crafty, smart, tough and skilled. What he lacks in elite speed he makes up in all other facets. He has a desire to defend and pressure and what this will do to allow Pickett to get off the chain will materialise through the course of the season. 

    I love him, always have.

      A hundred years ago today, on 2 May 1925, Melbourne kicked off the new season with a 47 point victory over St Kilda to take top place on the VFL ladder after the opening round of the new season.  Top place was a relatively unknown position for the team then known as the “Fuchsias.” They had finished last in 1923 and rose by only one place in the following year although the final home and away round heralded a promise of things to come when they surprised the eventual premiers Essendon. That victory set the stage for more improvement and it came rapidly. In this series, I will tell the story of how the 1925 season unfolded for the Melbourne Football Club and how it made the VFL finals for the first time in a decade on the way to the ultimate triumph a year later.

    • PREVIEW: West Coast

      Saturday’s election night game in Perth between the West Coast Eagles and Melbourne represents 18th vs 15th which makes it a tough decision as to which party to favour. The Eagles have yet to break the ice under their new coach in Andrew McQualter who is the second understudy in a row to confront Demon Coach Simon Goodwin who was also winless until a fortnight ago. On that basis, many punters might be considering to go with the donkey vote but I’ve been assigned with the task of helping readers to come to a considered opinion on this matter of vital importance across the nation. It was almost a year ago that I wrote a preview here of the Demons’ away game against the Eagles (under the name William from Waalitj because it was Indigenous Round).  I issued a warning that it was a danger game, based on my local knowledge that the home team were no longer easybeats and that they possessed a wunderkind generational player in Harley Reid who was capable of producing stellar performances playing among men a decade and more older than he.  At the time, the Eagles already had two wins off the back of a couple of the young man’s masterclasses and they had recently given the Bombers a scare straight after their Anzac Day blockbuster draw against the then reigning premiers.

      Round 08 of the 2025 AFL Season kicks off on Thursday with a must-win game for the Bombers to stay in touch with the top eight, while the struggling Roos seek a morale-boosting upset. Friday sees the Saints desperate for a win as well if they are to stay in finals contention and their opponents the Dockers will be eager to crack in to the Top 8 with a win on the road. Saturday kicks off with a pivotal clash for both sides asthe Bulldogs look to solidify their top-eight spot, while Port seeks to shake their pretender tag. Then the Crows will be looking to steady their topsy turvy season against a resurgent Blues looking to make it 4 wins on the trot. On Election Night a Blockbuster will see the ladder-leading Pies take on the Cats, who are keen to bounce back after a narrow loss. On Sunday the Sydney Derby promises fireworks as the Giants aim to cement their top-eight status, while the Swans fight to keep their season alive. The Hawks, celebrating their centenary, will be looking to easily account for the Tigers who are desperate to halt their slide. The Round concludes on Sunday Night with a top end of the table QClash with significant ladder implications; both Queensland teams are in scintillating form.     • REPORT: Richmond

      The fans who turned up to the MCG for Melbourne’s Anzac Day Eve clash against Richmond would have been disappointed if they turned up to see a great spectacle. As much as this was a night for the 71,635 in attendance to commemorate heroes of the nation’s past wars, it was also a time for the Melbourne Football Club to consolidate upon its first win after a horrific start to the 2025 season. On this basis, despite the fact that it was an uninspiring and dour struggle for most of its 100 minutes, the night will be one for the fans to remember. They certainly got value out of the pre match activity honouring those who fought for their country. The MCG and the lights of the city as backdrop was made for nights such as these and, in my view, we received a more inspirational ceremony of Anzac culture than others both here and elsewhere around the country.

      The match up of teams competing in our great Aussie game at its second highest level is a rarity for a work day Thursday morning but the blustery conditions that met the players at a windswept Casey Fields was something far more commonplace.They turned the opening stanza between the Casey Demons and a somewhat depleted Richmond VFL into a mess of fumbling unforced errors, spilt marks and wasted opportunities for both sides but they did set up a significant win for the home team which is exactly what transpired on this Anzac Day round opener. Casey opened up strong against the breeze with the first goal to Aidan Johnson, the Tigers quickly responded and the game degenerated into a defensive slog and the teams were level when the first siren sounded.
