So it appears most of the players mentioned have no left. The question has to be asked, if this was widespread, the leadership group and Captain would have been complicit in these types of things?

Leaves Mitchell in an awkward position as well.

I'm struggling to process this news

If the allegations are true, and reading the ABC article it's hard not assume they are, this is beyond comprehension.

Horrors like this sound like something that has come to light from the 1950s or 60s, and that collectively we all say that's horrific, thank god things have changed. But it is alleged to have happened in the last 15 years. I'm shocked.

Again, if true, this is on another level all together to the bombers drug scandal. Both scenarios involve a complete breach of trust, but this is something else entirely.

Yes Binman lets us see what the named people and  organisation say in response to these serious allegations

Hodge and other playing leaders are going to have to be careful about what they say as I imagine they will be seriously questioned about this is an official capacity.

I would think the leaders in the playing group would be at least somewhat aware of living situations of new draftees. If the alleged coaching and development group has witheld the information of what they were instructing these families to do then that is another thing altogether and they have breached their trust as well.

Wow. I just woke up and read that. Couldn’t read the whole thing.
i know how many legal checks an article like this would have gone through at the ABC

This is beyond evil

Was it only aboriginal boys who suffered like this? Could it also have happened to non-aboriginal boys who had to break up relationships? And is it restricted to only one club? Still happening?

Lots of questions that need answers. Soon.

Wowee, what a read.

While it was an indigenous investigation in the terms of reference by the club, I think a new more in-depth investigation that will focus on all players of the period as I am curious whether the behaviour targeted at certain groups or was the widespread culture of the club?

I wonder how many workplace and racial descrimination laws were broken in these actions.

However, a proper due process investigation is needed before we'll know exactly what happened.

**Was it deliberately released on GF week to try and hide it or just when it was completed.

'On face value, it's hard to find more serious allegations'

No [censored] Gil.

But I bet you will protect your mate Clarkson. He always gets what he wants from the AFL. Rule changes, draft concessions, the ability to racially vilify players. It's all fair game for some.

Its either:

  1. one huge defamation case in the offing, or
  2. reprehensible behaviour that's almost unimaginable.

Saying that I'd be amazed if the ABC authorised the release of this article without first addressing the potential legal ramifications - they must be very confident that their sources are rock-solid.

Having just read the ABC article, I’m having a lot of trouble conceiving how such detailed and unusually harrowing accounts could possibly be concocted. The accounts of the women affected in particular seem so specific and shocking in their severity, that I’m at a loss as to how anybody could make such a thing up.

There are obviously many more steps to be taken in this process, but man…..

If true, this is the darkest day I’ve ever witnessed, not only for the Hawks, but for the entire sport. The Bombers’ scandal was one thing, but this is far worse.

And if true, Clarkson/Fagan are done, and should never show their faces at a footy oval again.

I’ve always thought Clarkson was a complete and utter xxxx (and have heard first-hand accounts that back that up), but the soft spot I have for Fagan has evaporated

IF and i stress IF these allegations are proven to be correct, these 2 are in for some serious ramifications.

If they are consistent (and the allegations are proven to be correct) then Clarkson should never coach again.

We will see.

I had been told in the early 2000s by a recruiter from another club (not Hawthorn, it must be said) that he believed Hawthorn had a long-standing, unofficial policy of not recruiting indigenous kids. Said they had changed that but put in place strict controls on all young recruits not from Melb city. At the time I thought he was spinning sheet. Not now

The weird part is, doing what they did wouldn’t help performance or lead to a settled young man playing good footy. Having a partner and kids often leads to a matured settled person.

so hiding behind wanting to win is crazy. They are just abusing young people

Not just them, but the club as well.

If true, then any number of work place laws have likely been broken, not least the responsibility to ensure a safe working environment.

Clarkson and Fagan likely to be stood down from their roles until enquiry completed.

North Melbourne can't take a trick. Their board must be in full blown meltdown mode.

I also can't imagine this would help Yze in his pursuit of a senior role, although there is absolutely nothing to suggest he was at all involved. It's just the optics really.

Russell Jackson is one of the finest journalists in the country and broken some of the biggest stories in recent times. No question on his sources and veracity of his story.

This is a shameful story and can only hope it leads to a positive inflection point for society at large. The depths that clubs have ‘allegedly’ plumbed to achieve success continue to shock.

Those who watched the 2024 Marsh AFL National Championships closely this year would not be particularly surprised that Melbourne selected Victoria Country pair Harvey Langford and Xavier Lindsay on the first night of the AFL National Draft. The two left-footed midfielders are as different as chalk and cheese but they had similar impacts in their Coates Talent League teams and in the National Championships in 2024. Their interstate side was edged out at the very end of the tournament for tea
