Watching the other finals, I admired - and am extremely envious - of how open their forward lines were and how forwards were often leading into open paddocks of space. Our forward line is like a mosh pit and no one leads or has space to lead. When you’ve only got one key forward, surely a mosh pit is not a winning plan.

I have noticed this for years we must cause the congestion ourselves and dot start me on Max competing with BBB in the air surley they dont both need to jump at the contest

Again, I’m also envious of the way other teams use the full 180 degrees of ground available to them at the kick outs. The space this can and does create enables so many more options going forward. It can backfire, but more often that not, the risk is worth the reward if well executed. Unfortunately our mosh pit simply moves from the left hand forward line to the left hand wing, and our slow boring rinse and repeat plan continues to baffle us all. From an aesthetic point of view only, I much preferred watching the 3 other great finals games rather than ours - which is sad.

Regarding the backline . . . and to some unremarkable salient points made by some posters that I am now going to remark upon.

I would say they (and 'they' are named later on - I have no fear) are all pretty one-dimensional back there. And the comp is full of OD players. Just in my era alone:

  1. Hudson simply chat himself when shooting for his 151st goal - no good under pressure at all.
  2. Robbie Flower the same. Often missed running goals in the wet from 55 metres out after taking the ball at half back and being bashed by Matthews for his trouble. Barassi had to permanently move him to half back to save his career.
  3. Carey was cr&p as a backman . . . Pagan had to move him forward where he carved out a barely passable career.
  4. Voss, Black, Lappin and White were no good in the granny of 2004 - lost the plot in the fourth quarter - wonder any of them played another game quite frankly.
  5. And don't get me started on Dusty . . . slack bast*#d only plays well in grannies.

So yeah - unfortunate Maysie, Jake the Snake, Tommy Petty, Pig Hibbo and Christian Salem need to take a good long hard look at themselves this week. The future of the club depends on it.

Wonder if it had anything to do with having already run 100m, the ground was wet, and he was 55m out?

Not to mention carrying the rest of his team.

the idea that the G is somehow an advantage for us is apocryphal: it is also the home ground for Collingwood and Richmond, but the advantage is greater for them, due to the size and noise of their supporter base. Unfortunately, at most  Melbourne games, our crowd may outnumber the opposition, but is not loud enough (in my opinion) to give us that significant advantage

I was more of the opinion for how we don't play the G well.

I started watching the replay this morning and as they ran through the banner boo's came through the cheers.

I am glad we aren't a booing crowd. That noise does carry and the players would hear it. We boo only when a mongrel act or howler of ump decision.

So I don't think it is that we have less vocal supporters, it is the tone of boo that makes it feel that way.

The home field will galvanise us, though will we sound more vocal?

They players have suggested that they feel supported at the G.

Big week, go Dees.

Addit: off now for my morning walk and to see if the team is training on Gosch's.

Well with Zorko, Mathieson and co coming to town next Friday night I hope we are a rabid boooing crowd. I am thinking of a quick fly in fly out of Perth for a captains run of booing.

I rarely look at this thread after a loss until a couple of days have gone by.  While the result was miserable, I wouldn't despair just yet, nor would I be particulalry confident.   With all the faults in our game style which have doubtless been discusseed in this thread, and with a large number of our players having a shocker, how is it that we only lost by 3 goals?  And 3 goals came from 50m penalties.

BTW, was there any media commentary about Franklin's staging?

Sensible post in the cold light of day Sue. Thanks.

We now don't meet swans till GF which  are the team I fear most this finals. but know they can be beaten by us with more efforts and a few lineup tweaks.

Cats can and should have  been beaten except for the AFL rule of "No paying of holding the ball by umpies in the final quarter against Geelong F.C".

Lions are certainly beatable by us and will be the year biggest dissappointmen if we don't.

And we have the AA full back in stunning form. Cameron and hawkins don't scare me.

Other results like Pies losing and Tiges/Dogs  being eliminated also work in Dees favour.

Up the Goody and team to re-set and get Friday night done  which I trust in them to achieve.

WTF

Huddo had severe concussion and could barely see properly

Simon Black played for another 10 years and remained a gun

Carey was a decent CHB but was the best player I have ever seen, Pagan built a game style around him

Nobody said that.  Its on record that even a star player wants us to make more noise, and last night a member of the coaching staff tried to gee the crowd up.  Like it or not, it does make a difference.  And we are not good at it, thats all.

Was noise an issue when we beat hawthorn and Geelong in 2018?? Was noise an issue when we were up by 12 points in the 3rd quarter…? crowds are generally noisy when winning and quite when losing… we were losing for most of the 2nd half.. no shock that the fans were quite

It's being talked about WCW. But as per usual, the media has pulled the wrong reign. Buddy is a sacred cow. I think he's a different sort of a cow.

Sydney got 3 goals from 50m penalties - I have not seen any explanation for the Franklin 50m. The free was appalling but I see how it was paid.

Jake Lloyd kicked his only two goals of the year - one was unbelievable from the boundary

Rowbotham kicked one that was a fluke that bounced across a number of players.

Hayward kicked a screamer from 50m on the boundary

Max gifted them a goal with his kick across CHF

The umpiring in the 2nd qtr was amongst the worst seen this year.

Our kicking was shocking except for Fritsch's boundary goal

BBBs mobility and ability to halve contests was terrible.

Melksham missed 3

We missed 4 chances in the 1st 10m of the last qtr

The Swans pressure was almost the highest of any team this year. Ours was also high but we were fumbly and had guys like ANB that were woeful

Other teams have learned to prey on our post clearance possessions and Sydney were great when the ball hit the ground. And like against geelong they were able to spoil the ball an extra 5-10m away from our crumbers.

We're not dead yet but we need to tidy up a lot

This narrative that pressure is our kryptonite is laughable.  Pressure is every teams biggest weakness.  The teams that apply the most defensive pressure always keep themselves in games and give themselves a chance to win. It's what got the Swans their flag in 2005 and it's Roos DNA.  Our forward 50 pressure on Friday night was down compared to Sydney's - especially our forward 50 tackle count but we still applied significant pressure over the night.  Our lack of composure with the ball when the pressure wasn't there was our biggest worry, as well as a lack of discipline that saw us cough up 3 50m penalties all resulting in goals.  In a three and a half goal game, that's a substantial headstart we gave them before pressure even became a factor.

Not saying our F50 work is perfect but envious of how other finalists are so much better ??

Geelong scored 9 more points

Collingwood 3 points more

Freo 4 points more

Dogs less

We missed some very easy goals

Sydney are very well drilled and structured defensively we lost the game by handing back momentum in the second quarter - that came on the back of others not in our F50 structure

    REDEEMING by Meggs

It was such a balmy spring evening for this mid-week BNCA Pink Lady match at our favourite venue Ikon Park between two teams that had not won a game since round one.   After last week’s insipid bombing, the DeeArmy banner correctly deemanded that our players ‘go in hard, go in strong, go in fighting’, and girl they sure did!   The first quarter goals by Alyssa Bannan and Alyssia Pisano were simply stunning, and it was 4 goals to nil by half-time.   Kudos to Mick Stinear.

    REDEEM by Meggs

How will Mick Stinear and his dwindling list of fit and available Demons respond to last week’s 65-point capitulation to the Bombers, the team’s biggest loss in history?   As a minimum he will expect genuine effort from all of his players when Melbourne takes on the GWS Giants at Ikon Park this Thursday.  Happily, the ground remains a favourite Melbourne venue of players and spectators alike and will provide an opportunity for the Demons to redeem themselves. Injuries to star play

    EASYBEATS by Meggs

A beautiful sunny Friday afternoon, with a light breeze and a strong Windy Hill crowd set the scene, inviting one team to seize the day and take the important four points on offer. For the Demons it was not a good Friday, easily beaten by an all-time largest losing margin of 65 points.   Essendon threw themselves into action today, winning most of the contests and had three early goals with Daria Bannister on fire.  In contrast the Demons were dropping marks, hesitant in close and comm

    DEFUSE THE BOMBERS by Meggs

Last Saturday’s crushing loss to Fremantle, after being three goals ahead at three quarter time, should be motivation enough to bounce back for this very winnable Round 5 clash at Windy Hill. A first-time venue for the Melbourne AFLW team, this should be a familiar suburban, windy, footy environment for the players.   Essendon were brave and competitive last week against ladder leader Adelaide at Sturt’s home ground. A familiar name, Maddison Gay, was the Bombers best player with

    BLOW THE SIREN by Meggs

Fremantle hosted the Demons on a sunny 20-degree Saturdayafternoon winning the toss and electing to defend in the first quarter against the 3-goal breeze favouring the Parry Street end. There was method here, as this would give the comeback queens, the Dockers, last use of the breeze. The Melbourne Coach had promised an improved performance, and we did start better than previous weeks, winning the ball out of the middle, using the breeze advantage and connecting to the forwards.

    GETAWAY by Meggs

Calling all fit players. Expect every available Melbourne player to board the Virgin cross-continent flight to Perth for this Round 4 clash on Saturday afternoon at Fremantle Oval. It promises to be keenly contested, though Fremantle is the bookies clear favourite.  If we lose, finals could be remoter than Rottnest Island especially following on from the Dees 50-point dismantlement by North Melbourne last Sunday.  There are 8 remaining matches, over the next 7 weeks.  To Meggs’

    DRUBBING by Meggs

With Casey Fields basking in sunshine, an enthusiastic throng of young Demons fans formed a guard of honour for the evergreen and much admired 75-gamer Paxy Paxman. As the home team ran out to play, Paxy’s banner promised that the Demons would bounce back from last week’s loss to Brisbane and reign supreme.   Disappointingly, the Kangaroos dominated the match to win by 50 points, but our Paxy certainly did her bit.  She was clearly our best player, sweeping well in defence.

    GARNER STRENGTH by Meggs

In keeping with our tough draw theme, Week 3 sees Melbourne take on flag favourites, North Melbourne, at Casey Fields this Sunday at 1:05pm.  The weather forecast looks dry, a coolish 14 degrees and will be characteristically gusty.  Remember when Casey Fields was considered our fortress?  The Demons have lost two of their past three matches at the Field of Dreams, so opposition teams commute down the Princes Highway with more optimism these days.  The Dees held the highe

    ALLY’S FIELDS by Meggs

It was a sunny morning at Casey Fields, as Demon supporters young and old formed a guard of honour for fan favourite and 50-gamer Alyssa Bannan.  Banno’s banner stated the speedster was the ‘fastest 50 games’ by an AFLW player ever.   For Dees supporters, today was not our day and unfortunately not for Banno either. A couple of opportunities emerged for our number 6 but alas there was no sizzle.   Brisbane atoned for last week’s record loss to North Melbourne, comprehensively out
