They all made the Grand Final though.....

Should we just merge this directly with the 'loading during the season' thread?

I guess one of the troubles of being a tight defensive unit is that even when we are dominating the game, the scores don't blow out in our favour and opponents can realistically hope to get a run of goals going and level things up in just a ten minute burst.

Other theory I'd throw out would be that the whole-ground defence requires a lot of people to all sustain their energy all the time. Just a few holes are all it takes.

Being able to hit hard in our own burst is crucial. It is why having both Fritsch and Pickett finding some bags of goals lately has got me optimistic about the finals.

Let’s just hope we are not leading at 3/4Q time in finals!

I'd happily take a 100pt lead at 3/4 time in each of our remaining games.

Certainly not the most desired stat but it's a new ball game now.

Don't forget Collingwood in 77.

My heart could not handle a draw in a Grand Final.

Does the Grand Final Guarantee work for the second week.

There wouldn't be a second week.  All drawn finals go to extra time now, including the GF.

For my interest D'stone - when was GF extra time rule introduced?

Only Carlton (1987) and Essendon (2000) made good on that stat.

You won't ever see a more dominant club than Essendon of 2000 while Carlton's last last 8 or so home and away games and finals in 1987 were seriously impressive.

So I'm guessing it was the Geelong and Freo games we were down at 3tr time.

2016 I believe.

I was there at the draw in 1977 with my Collingwood supporting dad and two North supporting brothers.  It was the weirdest feeling and nobody knew what to do or how to feel.

Despite my long held opposition to the idea,  I now support the idea of extra time.

Had the rule been in place in 2010, a fast finishing St Kilda may well have denied Collingwood the flag.

Now do the “but went on to lose” stat

Not exactly that stat, but for the year so far we're rated 14th for 4th quarter percentage.

We've lost 10 4th quarters this year.

(We're 1st for 1st quarter percentage)

4 times for us (Collingwood x 2, Sydney, Bulldogs).

No idea what any other side’s record is but can’t imagine many had 4 or more.

Yep. St kilda were unlucky against the Pies draw. Was that the year they changed it  after that game, D'sone?

The extra time with sometimes the The golden point or goal.

It is exciting but I think I prefer the old come back next week.

I mean it's an extra week of AFL.

How can you argue against that?

It may seem strange having 2 gf parades but oh well.

Surprised the afl accepted the new model....given how much more $ they could have made.

Maybe it interfered with the horse racing season or something or maybe that's how all major sporting final finals are and thus the Afl just followed suite.

Let's just hope we win by the the same margin or more again.

I want the 'Most times in front at 4 quarter time in the 2022 finals series' record.

The two games we weren't leading in were Freo and Geelong.

Meaning we were leading against Sydney (19 point turnaround), Collingwood (28 point turnaround), Bulldogs (23 point turnaround), and Collingwood (14 point turnaround) at 3qtr time.

Not THAT damning. You can't win them all. Good news being we are in it to win in essentially every game we play.

This is exactly what I was trying to work out. Thanks praha. The data shows me we're an excellent chance of being in front at 3QT and a very good chance of going on with it from there. Obviously the teams that did get a run on were better teams, but it's something the coaches can break down and implement some fixes/build belief.

I'll be happy to share that '3 times' record with a team coming from the EF winners or QF losers!

😉

Oh yeah, good call Timothy! Lousy technical stuff!

  • DRAFT: The Next Generation

It was not long after the announcement that Melbourne's former number 1 draft pick Tom Scully was departing the club following 31 games and two relatively unremarkable seasons to join expansion team, the Greater Western Giants, on a six-year contract worth about $6 million, that a parody song based on Adele's hit "Someone Like You" surfaced on social media. The artist expressed lament over Scully's departure in song, culminating in the promise, "Never mind, we'll find someone like you," although I suspect that the undertone of bitterness in this version exceeded that of the original.

  • AFLW REPORT: Brisbane

A steamy Springfield evening set the stage for a blockbuster top-four clash between two AFLW heavyweights. Brisbane, the bookies’ favourites, hosted Melbourne at a heaving Brighton Homes Arena, with 5,022 fans packing in—the biggest crowd for a Melbourne game this season. It was the 11th meeting between these fierce rivals, with the Dees holding a narrow 6–4 edge. But while the Lions brought the chaos and roared loudest, the Demons aren’t done yet.
