From bigfooty:

  • I am going for Lions by 30 in the best four quarter display we have seen all year full of individual brilliance, team defense, desperation, focus, accuracy, no injuries, and a huge fillip for the finals series (that is re the Lions not the Demons btw).

  • theyve definitely had the wood over us recently, our last 3 matches against them stick out to me as some of the more painful ones in the fagan era. the home and away losses sucked in particular where we looked a million bucks and then wilted in both.  BUT none of those were at the gabba. i reckon we're up for it

  • Feel like we'll get the Dees this week. Wouldn't be confident against them at the G, but equally we beat them this week and they'll have to go the very long way to the GF. Meanwhile, I'd back us against Sydney week one - home or away.

  • Players such as Fritsch, Pickett and Meklnsham concern me match wise. I think Andrews should have Brown measure, but those three I mentioned give me headaches as does Petracca going forward.

  • Hopefully our mids learn from last time we met by not putting it up high for the likes of Lever and May to have a field day. Joe should do what he did against Weitering and drag May / Lever to places they don't want to be and give the likes of Cam, Linc, Charlie room to do there thing.

  • We haven’t even got close in recent times and we now also have a worrying trend for allowing teams to go on goal runs late, this is music to Melbourne’s ears. Again, I desperately want to be wrong.

  • Rayner is looking good, that boy will have mountains of confidence carrying us over the line last round.  Eric has found his range now compared to last time when we met them.  Matho in as a stopper, we didn't have a proper stopper last time.  Gabba factor.

  • I'm very confident we'll be a good show this time. Players will know this is the time to prove a point and knock this hoodoo over

  • Viney tore us a new one last time we played them.  So does Matho go to Oliver or Viney?

  • Viney was the difference in our last game. Gawn, Oliver, Petracca & Viney are all as dangerous as any other player in the competition. Keeping them reasonably quiet will go a long way in winning this game.

  •  Their whole midfield dominated us. Clug was alright, Harmes tagged Neale out of it, Berry tagged Langdon but nobody else did much.

  • I unfortunately have 0 confidence in this game and kind of want to put serious money on Melbourne @ $2

  • I'm confident in our ability to beat Melbourne this time around, however, it'll hinge on whether or not we can make the most of our periods of dominance and not waste them as we did against the Saints, and whether or not we have the concentration necessary to apply ourselves defensively for the majority of the game.

  • Hopefully, our boys come out and make a physical statement early, especially after the mauling the dees gave our mids earlier in the year. Besides that, we couldn't have asked for a better dress rehearsal before finals. C'mon Lions!

  • Biggest H&A game at the Gabba since the "If it bleeds we can kill it" game in 2001?

  • If we don't win this game I'm gonna go berzerk!

  • If we do the same as the last few and concede 5 goal bursts. We can’t play slow and controlled. It doesn’t work nowadays. We have to back our kick and run offense no matters what. Run is the key.

  • I think size is the key we need Matho to blanket petracca like he did with jack steele last week and Berry to tag clayton oliver.

  • Size against Kozzy an Co isn’t going help.

  • I don't think it's any disaster if we lose this week. All that means is that we're probably not good enough anyway and we'll win a home final from 5th. I welcome the Tigers . We won't stuff up like last time. If we beat Melbourne then we're in with a chance at the flag. I don't think it's a super strong .

  • Actually a win on Friday probably means 3rd, and likely Swans at SCG. We did play very well there earlier in the year so lets get it done on Friday

 My favourite:

  • Not confident at all. Whether it is AFL or NRL, for some reason any time a team named Brisbane plays a team named Melbourne, they go to mud. It’s all mental. We can definitely best them but I’m not sure the team actually believes it and that’s a massive issue.

I think if we roll them this week and by roll i just mean win by 1 pt or more, a few other sides in the competition will be very nervous going into the finals.

They are by far a better side up here playing at Gabba however we bring our best it is better than their best. Go Dees. Will be there supporting out loud.

True, but a lot of those games were at familiar grounds. Adelaide Oval, Optus stadium etc. The Gabba is a different beast, as is the SCG which we don’t have a good record at.

Also a lot of neutral games in there.

True but the dimensions of the Gabba are probably the closest to the MCG than any other ground.

While the Gabba looks like a 'fortress' they play weaker teams there, like Geelong at Kardinia Park.

A look at their record there this year:

  • Wins:  Port, North, Coll, Eagles, Giants, Saints, Bulldogs, Suns, Carlton
  • Losses:  Ess

Only two of those teams made finals last year.  Of the two wins vs this year's top 8 teams the Coll win was early in the season when they weren't doing much.

Like Geelong they tally up wins at their Home ground but fall short in finals when they come up against the best teams.

Dees by 5 goals!!

Our interstate record is impeccable of late. Let’s hope it stays that way.

It’s so good in fact that if we get a home final, I’ve heard the Club are considering, early in the week leading up to the final, having an interstate training camp, and flying in for the game!

Their brand doesn’t stand up in finals, this game will be played like a final.

Their midfield is way to reliant on 1 player, I can’t see them containing all of tracc, Oliver and viney.

we will win by 3 goals…

Well one of them was on the money!

Storm just won their 12th game in a row against Brisbane 60-12.

Since you asked.  No love for him.  Almost universal condemnation.

  • Very much hope whatever the Petty incident was isn't covered up/ignored. Depending on what it was, we should be considering giving Zorko a club suspension and him missing the elimination final.
  • And if it wasn’t being taken off him already, his captaincy ends this year.
  •  Really all around awful performance capped off with our captain acting most un-captain like.
  • This finals campaign needs to be Zorko's final games as captain and next year his last as a player.
  • Melbourne were fairly classy about it but pretty clear Zorko said something pretty horrible. So incredibly disappointing from anyone let alone the club captain.
  • Its been hard to defend him over the years through all the stupid crap he does. Just wish the club had looked elsewhere for leadership
  • At least whatever was said will take the focus off the many shortcomings of that performance.
  • Pretty disgraceful then. If the AFL doesn't ban him multiple weeks, we should.
  • Would help our chances of winning, without having him out their carrying on like a [censored] embarrassing his peers and fans.
  • We’ve had some great recent captains haven’t we. Hard to pick who was the worse person - Zorko, Beams or Rockliff.
  • We should get on the front foot and ban him internally for a week so the AFL doesn't have to get involved. Not on and it also shows we don't stand for that kind of crap.
  • Can’t remember being more embarrassed as a Lions fan, especially after the appalling conduct by our captain.
  • Say what you want about Fagans coaching skills. But I feel bad about him having to discuss whatever vile s**t Zorko has said
  • Got 4 text messages from mates all along the lines of Zorko is a ******* [censored]. All I could do was respond with a thumbs up
  • Regardless of what was said to Petty, his conduct tonight for the whole game was absolutely unforgivable.  He has completely given up on his personal standards as a player and leader, no wonder we lack leadership in big games.  No one even wants to fly the flag for him, it’s selfish and distracting.  How his behaviour, as our skipper, has been allowed to deteriorate to this point is an indictment on our club.
  • Said it before he is a disgrace as a captain .yet all the softies go 5 time best and fairest . He is a grub and people wonder why our team has no heart he is the chief leader of it

The only bit of tolerance shown was quickly shot down:

  • Let’s wait to see what happened before we crucify him.
  • Zorko obviously said something he shouldn't have but can we wait until we know more about the situation before retiring the guy.
    • Don't think based on his past behaviour we should give him the benefit of the doubt tbh. I don't think a bloke starts crying based on nothing.
    • Fair enough

My favourite:

  • And there didn't seem to be any need for it at that stage of the game. If you want to be a tough guy go pick on Melksham

By the way that was just from page 1 and 2 of bigfooty.  Didn't bother with the next 8 pages.

On the game itself:

  • We. Are. Pretenders.
  • Another big game.  Another capitulation.  Demons play as a team.  We play like we all stars and someone else can do the dirty work.
  • Absolute disgrace.  Mentally weak.  Tigers will beat us by 50 points, we will just freeze over and embarrass ourselves again on the big stage.  Just get the final out of the way and give us all a break. Eyes on getting Ashcroft in and a refresh/reset for 2023.  Fagan safe for now, but I wouldn’t be extending him anytime soon.  Complete debarcle, but entirely predictable.

My favourite:

  • Where can we find the season review thread?

Again, I didn't go past page 2 of their thread.

As an aside, the bf mods may have cleaned up their thread but posters were very mild mannered and measured about the Zorko incident and about the result.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
