Strange quote from Freo coach

Freo’s pursuit of Jackson seems incredibly short-sighted to me. Freo are a young team with huge upside for the next few years. They’ve already shown that they can compete with the best teams and, personally, I see them as one of our biggest rivals over the next few years. Why you would want to jeopardise this - by forcing out players and forcing them onto smaller contracts - just to land one player in the infancy of their career is beyond me. Jackson doesn’t even fulfil a list need for them. Could be a culture killer if guys like Darcy feel like they’ve been taken for granted.

As of right now this is all hypothetical, but geez it makes you glad to have Tim Lamb and Jason Taylor at the head of our list management!

Agree.

It's a bit weird because I think their  biggest need, by far, is a couple of high quality big bodied midfield bulls to compete with the bontempellis, cripps and Oliver types.

And they don't really have an equivalent to extractors like viney and libba.

Their other big need is one or two decent key forwards, particularly given lobb is likely to leave.

Jackson would have to improve his forward craft a fair bit to fill a key forward role.

They have a number one ruck, and a bloody good one, in darcy. So what need would Jackson fill?

Unlikely i know, but maybe they are thinking of him playing as a mid?

Mundy is getting more of the ball than his career averages this season. Would not be surprised if Freo have made another monumental big name recruit stuff up like with Hogan and McCarthy.

Watching one of the footy shows last night the hosts (mighta been Lyon, Riewoldt and Brown) were wondering if Mundy has had his hand forced.

I had automatically assumed Mundy was pushed. Be very surprised if that wasn't the case.

I thought Longmuir sounded incoherent in his pregame interview. Wouldn’t be surprised if the wheels are falling off. Here’s hoping the purple is becoming puce.

I'd say there may be some truth in that - Fyfe replacement of sorts

I've only got one word - Peter Bell . . .

I wonder if Longmuir meant indifferences or differences?   One for the grammar thread, perhaps?

Irregardless of what he said I this this requires more enquiry

"Well I couldn't just call you man...". And in footy parlance, 37 IS old!

Seriously though, I don't understand at all why they would choose to not proceed with Mundy, but I will be glad if they do. He is one of those players who has destroyed us over the years (Paul Chapman and Andrew Embley are 2 others).

All I can say is, good luck to Jackson.
The grass isn’t always greener. You have no idea how good you have it at Melbourne.

Definitely not being assessed on merit, if it was, he’d be in the first three blokes picked.

With Fyfe playing minimal games they would be shooting themselves in the foot to get rid of him

Mundy to Gold Coast a la Hodge to Brisbane?

Edited by old55

The talk is Lobb is leaving because of issues at the club. If true, things not looking bright at Freo.Hope Luke's getting all the inside goss, might help with his decision

Chris Scott will be chasing him to add some youth to his list.

If I was North I'd be going after him - tough to move across the country with a young family but for a couple of hundred thousand I'm sure he'd make it work

I'm not sure it would be a good move for North.

They have Cunnington due back in and he's their spiritual leader if you like...they need to blood kids in the midfield and they don't know whether he will get his spot back. Bringing in Mundy to take up another spot makes no sense.

Great player Mundy but doesn't bring a wealth of finals experience either.

They are probably better off chasing one of the older Tiger players...

Lobb is leaving because his partner wants to return to the eastern states. Nothing to do with issues at Freo

My view may be biased but Freo is setting themselves up to really [censored] the bed in their persuit for Jackson.

Forcing favourite sons to retire, giving up draft picks, letting good players walk.... This has Tim Kelly written all over it.

It makes you wonder whether they are serious about the business of winning a Premiership. Mundy is an awesome player and I'd still rate as among their best players.

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
