I really liked some of the performances of our "lesser lights" last night - Spargo, Rivers and Jordon all felt to me like they got some form back, and I have to give credit to Melksham as he played better than I expected we'd see from him.

When we dominate contested ball like that, and we bring all-ground pressure, we are right in the thick of the flag hunt. We didn't bring that, at all, last week against the Dogs, and we didn't bring close enough to it against Geelong and Collingwood. This week we showed Fremantle what happens when we step our game up (and we're not missing May and have a one-legged Petty). Next week, let's hope we bring the same heat and show Collingwood something they didn't see on Queen's Birthday.

Rather than a big 40+ point win next week. Do we run with a couple of point win, to prove that not only can the filfth be beaten, but they are not the masters of the close games?ย

My heart couldnโ€™t stand that โ€ฆ.. even if the scenario was Pies 5 points up, headed for goal with seconds remaining โ€ฆ. very controversial free to Petty at CHB on the siren ย โ€ฆ.. a more controversial 50 against Ginivan โ€ฆ followed by a blatant 50 against de Goey bringing Petty to the goal square โ€ฆ. 1 point win to us. ย  Otherwise blitz them by >95 points bringing their miserable percentage down to <100.ย

Every chance we play them in a big final so I want to get inside their heads. Strangle the life out of them, stomp a mudhole in them and walk it dry!

BT is disgracefully bad, I can only imagine the reason he still calls is because he has a contract and probably has something on some high ups at Seven. Funny that Rex Hunt chose to direct his issues towards Daisy and not the fact that there is a commentator who is so far behind the game it makes me cringe any time he speaks.

I finally managed to watch the replay, the way we played was the "Melbourne way" that Goody has instilled. We controlled every part of the contest, and save for a period in the 3rd quarter where Freo were pressing but not getting reward we never looked like being in any kind of distress. Does make you wonder if the Freo loss earlier in the year was over rated given we were missing May for most of the game and Petty for a large chunk including their burst. Fair play they took advantage but they had no chance of breaking our defence.

These away wins can mean so much and can be the perfect springboard for the next few weeks, if we can bring that game plan and pressure against the Pies, we win. The Pies have been hanging on in ridiculous fashion since the bye, but I would not be wanting it to go down to the wire as we have recently panicked with close games.

One thing I have to mention is Gus in the middle, Harmes has provided a great option for giving him jobs to do, but I have to say the fact of it is that Gus is a better player and if we can cover him in defence (which I thought Hunt was really good) then I would love to see him stay there for the rest of the year. He's had a stellar year as a defender and if we move him back there I won't be gutted but I just think this win proved that he is a natural midfielder.

I also thought May was back to his best, but it does seem that he needs Lever to be around to be able to play his best. Those two with Petty when together seem like an unbreakable wall, lose one of them and it does seem like we're a bit shaky.

Finally the only disappointment from the match was Weid, the only positive I can give him is that he made the most of his one moment in the light. The rest was just mostly him not giving enough of a competitive effort, it seems all or nothing with him. He stays only because structurally we need him there at least until Brown is fully fit, but jeez he is one of the most frustrating players we've had for a while.

Great win, possibly season defining.

The good thing about having Gus in the middle, Harmes forward and Hunt back is they can all legitimately play in different positions. So if the backline needs Gus at any point, we can move Gus back, Harmes to the middle and Hunt can play forward.

the things that pass for analysis in the afl media are pathetic and you can only assume they think we are morons as a result. I am yet to find one really good football analyst in the media. Some commentators are good but everyone is short sighted and reactive. Itโ€™s gotta be by design.

I wish.

The AFL love to copy all the stupid things about American sport - like 'game day experience'.

Unfortunately, we haven't copied the way their sports are covered - which on the whole is brilliant accross all their major sports.

And the other related thing they haven't imported is open access to the full range of stats. Instead they lock up the champion data and dribble it out to the public via morons in the media who don't know the difference between cause and symptom.

NFL commentary is fantastic. Tony Romo is just about the best expert commentator in all of sport. Ricky Ponting is as close as we have to Romo. The standard in AFL is nowhere near this.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Richmond

Round four kicks off early Saturday afternoon at Casey Fields, as the mighty Narrm host the winless Richmond Tigers in the second week of Indigenous Round celebrations. With ideal footy conditions forecastโ€”20 degrees, overcast skies, and a gentle breeze โ€” expect a fast-paced contest. Narrm enters with momentum and a dangerous forward line, while Richmond is still searching for its first win. With key injuries on both sides and pride on the line, this clash promises plenty.

  • AFLW REPORT: Collingwood

Expectations of a comfortable win for Narrm at Victoria Park quickly evaporated as the match turned into a tense nail-biter. After a confident start by the Demons, the Pies piled on pressure and forced red and blue supporters to hold their collective breath until after the final siren. In a frenetic, physical contest, it was Captain Kateโ€™s clutch last quarter goal and a missed shot from Collingwoodโ€™s Grace Campbell after the siren which sealed a thrilling 4-point win. Finally, Narrm supporters could breathe easy.

  • CASEY: Williamstown

The Casey Demons issued a strong statement to the remaining teams in the VFL race with a thumping 76-point victory in their Elimination Final against Williamstown. This was the sixth consecutive win for the Demons, who stormed into the finals from a long way back with scalps including two of the teams still in flag contention. Senior Coach Taylor Whitford would have been delighted with the manner in which his team opened its finals campaign with high impact after securing the lead early in the game when Jai Culley delivered a precise pass to a lead from Noah Yze, who scored his first of seven straight goals for the day. Yze kicked his second on the quarter time siren, by which time the Demons were already in control. The youngster repeated the dose in the second term as the Seagulls were reduced to mere

Narrm time isnโ€™t a standard conceptโ€”itโ€™s the time within the traditional lands of Narrm, the Woiwurrung name for Melbourne. Indigenous Round runs for rounds 3 and 4 and is a powerful platform to recognise the contributions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in sport, community, and Australian culture. This week, suburban footy returns to the infamous Victoria Park as the mighty Narrm take on the Collingwood Magpies at 1:05pm Narrm time, Sunday 31 August. Come along if you can.

The Dees demolished the Saints in a comprehensive 74-pointshellacking. ย We filled our boots with percentage โ€” now a whopping 520.7% โ€” and sit atop the AFLW ladder. Melbourneโ€™s game plan is on fire, and the competition is officially on notice.

  • REPORT: Collingwood

It was yet another disappointing outcome in a disappointing year, with Melbourne missing the finals for the second consecutive season. Indeed, it wasnโ€™t even close, as the Demons' tally of seven wins was less than half the number required to rank among the top eight teams in the competition. When the dust of the game settled and supporters reflected on Melbourne's ย six-point defeat at the hands of close game specialists Collingwood, Max Gawn's words about his teamโ€™s unfulfilled potential rang true โ€ฆ well, almost.ย
