Does Essendon still have trading rights?

Harmes wants to play midfield and doesn’t like playing elsewhere. Similar to Brayshaw EXCEPT that Angus can play anywhere and excel whereas James just doesn’t excel anywhere other than in the middle. I have also heard he does not cope well when not in the middle either.

Sorry but other than cameo 'surprise change up' appearances for a week or two or maybe a few quarters, Gus has proven he isn't as capable at sustaining the consistent 'grunt' / burst efforts for a constant 'weekly' stint in the middle.

Maybe if he trained differently for this position with a full pre-season.  His game in there against the Swans was abysmal and possibly the worst performance (or close to it) he's ever put in in at least 3 to 4 seasons and easily the worst of the 22 who took the field on the day in our biggest match of the year (to that point).

His follow up against the Lions was a big improvement (hard not to be) but no better than Viney who also had a pretty ordinary game (by his usual standards anyway).

Compare that to Harmes (obviously different roles... but performance is still performance) who was in the top 3 to 5 players for us in both finals!  Harmes stood up when the chips were down.  Same as he did in the GF when things were looking a bit shakey.

Gus did also (in the GF) but playing a different role.... Wing/HF.

Have a friend who works at Essendon who mentioned tippa was going to retire as his heart isn’t in the game and just doesn’t have the worth ethic to train and obviously let himself go abit for football standards..  strange he wants back in

Tarryn Thomas is “wrestling“ with handing in a trade request at North Melbourne

If he does, would we expect interest from the Dees??? Clearly a talent but from the outside, work ethic is to be considered!!

Would bloody hope so. If he's gettable he should be our number one target this trade period. He was on the verge of breakout in 2021, kicking 24 goals and averaging 19 disposals. He had some brilliant games late in the season with a 24 touch 4 goal game amongst them. He's still young at 22, is a smooth mover with great skills, and with a fresh start he could become an elite player across half forward or wing for us. I hope we're hassling his manager!

Word is he would be a Free Agent but Essendon want him back. Not sure where it would land.

Far more upside than Lachie Hunter IMO

Angus has excelled when in midfield - Elite in 2018.
Angus was very good as a defensive minded wingman in a flag winning year.
Angus was in the extended squad for AA this year playing off a HBF.

I am sorry but to compare Angus and James is unfair to James and I won’t do it. That is an unfair bar for a role player.

Marginal time in defence in 2021 H&A.  played 89% of time Wing/HF.

2018 he wasn't a FT (mostly) mid fielder from memory.  More a HF/mid who played occasional games mostly in the middle like the match in Alice where he did excel (surprise change up).

Angus appeared to be covering the Salem role prior to Salem's return and finding of form with JJ trying to cover the Gus role of 2021 IMV, maybe slightly more defensive.  JJ vg in that more defensive role off the wing but anytime he drifted forward (which wasn't that often) he looked like a duck out of water.  Gus drifting forward at least has some idea and can sometimes mark/hit the scoreboard and deliver the ball into more dangerous spots IMV.  Watching JJ (delivery) coming inside 50 was terrifying in comparison.

Gus doesn't hit the scoreboard. Has only kicked 5 goals in 49 games over the past 2 years, admittedly some as a defender this year. Jordon kicked 7 this year.

I think Jordon's disposal and overall game was very good this year until he started playing with injury. He's maligned unfairly.

Would be a perfect fit for us, would love to be in the running.

Life would be a lot easier for TT with our mids around him

Gus spent all of 2021 and about 70% of 2022 as a defender.

His scoreboard impact means zip if he hasn't played forward of centre for nearly two years.

AFL 3rd rd compo #52-53 for Hunt as a UFA

—————————

* GWS likely to offer #43 (GWS 3rd rd) for Bedford .

BUT Dees should push for GWS 21 for Bedford and MFC pick 32.
* Dees likely to then offer magpies the #21 for Grundy

—————————

* FREO likely to offer acquired pick 8 (from Port to Kangas as part of JHF trade ; Kangas then use in deal to get Logue) PLUS  Freo 2023 future 1st rd for Jackson

^^either use pick 8 to get McKenzie, Phillipou or Hollands OR offer GWS the package of pick 8 and Freo future 1st to get pick 3 (GWS) to get either Cadman or Tsatas.

Surely Logue is not worth pick 8.  Will Freo have anything left?

I don't think Cadman will be there at 3 - would need pick 1 or 2

Good lord.

I haven't seen much of Louge, but is he even remotely close to being worth that amount of money?

That has salary dump written all over it come 2026.

Not worth anywhere near that. North have to pay higher to attract talent due to being a basket case. We were in the same position 10 years ago. No gun wants to go there, so they're now overpaying for average players. Logue is middle of the road 400k level player.

Hopefully for us, the trade is Logue and pick 13 to North for pick 8. Freo then trade us pick 8 and their future first for Jackson. That's probably the best result we can hope for in the Jackson trade.

lol Logue on 800K. worth about half that.

I guess North have to pay someone to get to 90% cap

Bad outcome for us. Leaves us no closer to getting a top 10 pick for Jackson. Anything outside top 10 is a failure for us. Sucks for us Freo are a sh*t club!

H&A 2021*....

Averaged approx 70% of time between the arcs as a winger LH (some mid field minutes probably mixed in).  Pretty much evenly split between the arcs.

Averaged roughly 35% in the back half of the ground (not inc. time inside D50) and 34% of time forward (not inc. time inside F50).

The balance of time (on average) was roughly split either inside 50 or inside defensie 50.

*Rough seasonal averages only.  Which varied, sometimes substantially, from match to match.

Spent the majority of the first final in 2021 in the forward half (just), including about 5% extra time inside 50 (52% in total forward)

Spent the majority of the last two finals in the back half with substantially more time (vs his H&A average) in defensive 50 (averaging 65% in back half in total).

I think a statement needs to be made here and an example set.  Send him into the draft and he takes his chances.  No deal!!

That’s an absolute steal. Acres will likely play round 1.  Had a very good year with Freo. Future 3rd!!!! Pick 50ish in 2023. Wtf. Carlton are the obvious winner.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
