Even if all we do is bring in Grundy, and draft 2 first rounders, I’ll be happy

Why does everyone want out of Freo?

I wonder of Longmuire is a bit of an acquired taste.

Reminds me a lot of goody in his early days of senior coaching.

Bit of of a my way or the highway, super intense vibe.

Yeah no.

Need to bring in another forward and attacking mid/half back with foot skills

Yeah I agree we need a forward, preferably a key forward, and another skilled player. Just haven’t really been linked to anyone else good atm. Maybe we get someone good off the Dockers, although I doubt it

I wonder if it's Longmuire or Freo list management/footy department as a whole. I thought Lobb wanted out because he's partner wanted to live on the east coast, Logue and Acres both reportedly got lowballed with initial contract offers, plus Logue is being olayed forward when he's really a key back. Plus fitting Jackson's contract in was always going to be a bit difficult

Logue was always the 3rd key defender they just didn’t need. Not much else you can do than play him forward then let him go.

The Acres situation is weird. They rejuvenated him as a player. Got him playing really strong footy on a wing and now they’re losing him for only a few dollars?

He’s the kind of player that can frustrate a coach but with Mundy retiring and Fyfe under threat of injury Freo shouldn’t be losing experienced mids. Capable wingers are hard to find too.

No surprises here with Hill officially requesting a trade to the Pies.

Small forward confirms wish to head to Magpies - https://www.afl.com.au/news/846192

For a club that's allegedly under salary cap pressure they are pretty active in recruiting players with Frampton and McStay both set to join the Pies as well. Grundy must be a near certainty to be a dee.

All the more reason to drive a very hard bargain over Grundy

Agreed. If we pulled out of the Grundy trade they would struggle to fit in McStay, Frampton and Hill without serious, fast shuffling of their current mix.

Jackson to Freo will determine what we can offer to the Pies for Grundy. Grundy deal agreed upon will determine whether of not Collingwood can fit in those 3

Hypothetical trade: 3 suitors for Bedford, Essendon the keenest (assumption based only on media tittle tattle)  and so we trade him in exchange for their 3 round pick and a swap of 2nd round picks - then on trading their current 2nd round pick  (22/23) for Grundy. Thoughts? Could that get it done? Would it be a fair trade for all parties?

Late 2nd and Pies to pay $400k per year for 5 years assuming he is on $1M per year

I'd start at $450k and that's still generous

The simple reality is that Grundy is massively overpaid at $1M x 5. If that contract were negotiated today he would get 4 x 700k at best

Nah Bedford looks a real sort in the Casey GF.

Sorry cannot agree. Bedford is a keeper and his game at Casey highlights why he is worth persisting with.

Unless we make a move to open a spot in the best 22 for him he’d be crazy not to leave. He’s a Dean Kent level player, would be nice to keep him but it’s time for him to spread his wings.

If we can enough get trade currency to bring in someone useful that’s a good deal for us

Well Spargo had a very ordinary year, so there is a spot there. How long can they persist with Spargo it's been a year. He's a must keep for mine his pace is something we lack. The player that must get a game has been knocking heavily on the door in the last half of the year is Chandler superb in the Grand Final and his last half of the year was just as good. If Melbourne are serious Spargo has to start at Casey and earn his spot again.

But he won’t want to stay if he can’t get a game.  Same for Chandler.  Whilst I love Spargo’s pressure, vision and delivery these two offer something extra re flair.

?? Pies looking at adding Fiorini (suns) Frampton (crows) Hill (Giants) and Mcstay (Lions). Is that a joke? No real retirements or delistings so where does the extra cash arrive from. Even if they offload Grundy, they’d likely still pay $400k of his $800k contract. Mcstay eats up the $400k alone.  They need $$$ to retain DEGOEY.  As well extra $$$s for other pies as well after this year. The Maths doesn’t add up.

If they trade Oliver Henry as is likely it will save a few hundred K.  Jordan Roughead will retire and that is another few hundred K.

Next year they are free of the $300k they are paying Treloar

Those three plus the many 'journeymen' out of contract this year if not renewed could easily add to about $1.0m altho' some will go to draftees/rookies.

I doubt De Goey will get much more than he currently gets.

It is also likely they will spread the incoming players $ to coincide with the retirement/salary reductions of Pendlebury, Howe, Cox, Sidebottom.

If there's one there I hope we can snag one.

But we might have the players  we need on our list already.  If Grundy is coming in as reported then we would like 2 key forwards (in addition to the 2nd ruck).  This is out of TMac, Brown, Petty and JVR.  If it were me I'd be pencilling in Petty and JVR over summer and see how they go training a full pre-season of this.

In defence we have May, Lever and the last spot to be filled by one of Turner, Smith, Tomlinson and Tmac (if injury free and not first choice forward).

Petty and JVR would take time to develop chemistry but both can take a  mark, have good skills and are good with follow up efforts.

I think in terms of flexibility it wouldn't be a terrible thing to have TMac and Petty both in the side where either could be swung forward or back depending on the game / matchups etc.

  • REPORT: Hawthorn

The final score in Saturday's game against Hawthorn was almost identical to that from their last contest three months ago. Melbourne suffered comprehensive defeats in both games, but the similarities ended there. When they met in Round 9, the Demons were resurgent, seeking to redeem themselves after a lacklustre start to the season. They approached the game with vigour and dynamism, and were highly competitive for the first three quarters, during which they were at least on par with the Hawks. In the final term, they lapsed into error and were ultimately overrun, but the final result did not accurately reflect their effort and commitment throughout the match.

  • CASEY: Box Hill

The Casey Demons ended the regular season on a positive note and gained substantial momentum leading into the finals when they knocked the Box Hill Hawks off the top of the VFL ladder in their final round clash at Casey Fields. More importantly, they moved out of a wild card position in the finals race and secured a week's rest as they leapfrogged up the ladder into fifth place with their decisive 23-point victory over the team that had been the dominant force in the competition for most of the season.
