What excellent news! But I am curious about how these contracts work. How can the club know what Clarry will be worth in seven years? He can't remain as powerful as he is now, can he? There must be some adjustment mechanism to take account of variation in his performance. Clarry and CP5 and Gawny and Gus and May and Lever and Jacko and Vines and Salo can't all be on $1.5m a year, can they? Just curious about how it all works.

Yes, look I'm worried about the strain on his neck from all the Brownlows and Premiership medals.

Will be interesting to hear Kane Cornes's view. He consistently criticises clubs for offering contracts of this length, using Brodie Grundy as an example. However, I can see why the club might have offered 7 years now, apart from the quality of his play. It could be seen as a "bonus" for signing early and forgoing his free agency rights. Makes sense for both parties, given the inevitable distraction which would otherwise occur if he remained unsigned in his final year before becoming a free agent.

Has literally signed on to be our games record holder.

Realistic career targets to chase;

First player to crack 10,000 career possessions.

All time records for contested possessions, clearances and Brownlow votes.

Get after it, Clarrie!

Thank you Clayton (Clarry) Oliver and MFC this is a great day for our club. What an absolute ️ Clarry is, so proud to be a Dee supporter today.❤️💙👍

+ 4 more flags. Average of 1 every 2 years

Imo it ends up being pretty much the same as all contracts; some end as bargains, others you over pay.  Franklin was a beauty for the Swans in terms of value, Brundy is a disaster. Josh Kelly, jury out.   In Brundy's case, the downside is clearly list killing, but the upside of nailing a long term contract also has to be recognized as you suggested (list stability, lower salary, marketing, clarity on signing other players!).  Given Oliver's durability thus far and his proven consistent match winning play its a huge win for mfc.

Grundy's contract was always rubbish from the moment it was signed (in January with a season still to run from memory) - midfielders are different to ruckman and he was overvalued off one good season. Clarry is a multiple B&F, champion midfielder with one flag already under his belt and leading the AFLCA award and warm favourite for the Brownlow and he's only 24. You wrap these guys up the minute you have the chance.

Yeah for a club in turmoil where everyone apparently hates the coach it's not bad hey!

I was chatting with him a few weeks ago and I mentioned The VFL and he didn't know what it was

No comparison with Grundy as you point out.

Franklin and Martin are the closet examples to type for Oliver. In additon, there's a large number of A graders of similiar age within the team and this simply locks away the multiple building blocks for sustained success with all those players spending their careers together.  That's a powerful weapon re: team unity. very difficult to put a value on this, but the usual commentary for GF success is the number of players that have played say, 100 games up to a young age say, early 20's.

In other words the Dees demographic now in place.  Oliver is just an outlier by a couple of years.

Grundy was just another poor decision by the Pies.

Dees fans to enjoy the next 6 years.

Obviously what is stopping Jackson and Brayshaw.
