Wow what a team Casey are. I thought Gold Coast would be competitive boy was I wrong. If Southport are our best competition then we have the flag in the bag. I think Geelong could test us we'll just have to wait and see. What a VFL player Mitch. Brown is. Unfortunately he can do the same thing at AFL level.

TURNING ON THE HEAT by KC from Casey

The Casey Demons headed north to taste some Queensland sunshine and despite having to leave out skipper Mitch White who was stricken with the flu, they had little trouble in turning on the heat and disposing of finals contender Gold Coast.

The Demons were dominant from the very start with exciting young key forward Jacob Van Rooyen on fire early and Mitch Brown destroying the Suns with his marking and leading despite his erratic kicking for goal. By the time newcomer Ryan Valentine goaled with his first kick at the 20 minute mark of the opening term for Casey’s fifth on the trot, the Suns looked completely demoralised. They were down by 34 points at the first break and then Brown put his kicking boots on after kicking 5 behinds to bag four goals. His half time tally was one point more than the home side’s 4.5 which had them trailing by 55 points. 

And it didn’t end there with the Demons ramming home another eight in the third quarter to underline their complete mastery over an enthusiastic but far less skilled and disorganised opponent. They pulled up a little in the final term providing the crowd with half an hour of junk time before they cantered to a 76 point victory that left them two games and percentage clear of the next best on the VFL ladder.

Apart from the two key forwards, the Demons were well served by the usual suspects in Jake Melksham, Kade Chandler, Luke Dunstan and Jayden Hunt who, based on their respective performances could easily come into most AFL teams. They were a cut above the standard of their opposition in the game played in this paddock outside the main facility at Carrara. 

The Demons have the luxury of being able to nurture their young talent in the VFL. Besides Van Rooyen, Bailey Laurie and rookie Andy Moniz-Wakefield had some special moments during the course of the game.

The Casey contingent blended in well with Jack Bell holding up his end in the ruck in the absence of Majak Daw. Riley Baldi and White’s replacement Roan Steele (two goals) were good again, Jimmy Munro led from the front and Matt Buntine was more than handy. 

Next Saturday sees the team head back home to cooler weather and Casey Fields for a clash against an improving Port Melbourne.

I like what I’m hearing from van Rooyen, how good is it that we’re not desperate to throw someone in and instead allow him to develop at a natural pace. Will only make him hungrier to force his way into the team. 

Casey look like an absolute force this season. 

Quick question on AMW, I was excited by us picking him up, where will he potentially fit into the team in the future? Absolutely no reason to rush him though. 

EDIT would love to see Chandler back in the team if later in the season, even if it’s a rotation to release some tired legs. He was really stiff to be suspended for 2 weeks but it looks like he’s taken it in his stride.

Watched a good amount, and this was a very bizarre low disposal game. Mitch Brown on 20 disposals, but midfielders only in the teens, and yet was a complete domination, everybody played well.  Much sharing!

Agree, Mitch Brown dominates at VFL, yet can’t make the leap to AFL. Just highlights the gap between VFL and AFL that he can’t hold down 3rd tall forward position in AFL.

Still having Hunt, Tomlinson, Dunstan and Rivers in the twos provides some depth for our Demons! Even though Rivers has lost form.

Styles and pace of vfl and AFL are different. Some plays thrive in the AFL system where it is quicker and more free flowing. Some don't.

I thought the same thing too. I’m not sure all the touches were recorded (Rosman was on 0 touches at one point, but had had at least one kick, Hunt had a chain of 3 touches but only given 2). Also it was a long down the line game so not that many touches needed when you are only taking three kicks to get it to the other end.

I mentioned about stats at VFL a while back now...it's been a trend over the last few years.

I remember when Grimes and Trengove were playing VFL they were racking up 30 plus every game. When ABN first started he was the same but noticed when he went back down a couple of years back his stats had dropped...Now we're lucky to see anyone getting 20 plus.

You would think Dunstan would be a 30 plus player at this level...

Ran into a Champion Data guy at the footy the other day. He said there were 6 people doing the stats at the game as well as a team back at the office going over replays and ensuring decisions called during the game were correct.

I suspect the maximum at a VFL game would be 2 although could even be 1 such is the cost.

I think it’s a credit to the style Casey are playing, low stoppages, quick direct ball movement, good team pressure that their stats are down across the board.

Against a tougher Collingwood team Dunstan had 39, the suns were a training drill in this one.

I’d like to see some of the guys get their hands on the ball more but it’s hard to argue the game plan isn’t working.

Stats at VFL level should be seen as provisional. You get a few missed and misallocated. They get revised the next day or so, I believe.

Agree totally wsws I was expecting to see some huge numbers but a very even spread across the team. Casey are playing great team footy.!!

One would hope so. I took a look at the stats for Van Rooyen compared with Mac Andrew and JVR scored 68 Dream Team Points for -

It doesn’t sound right to me because JVR’s contribution looked far superior on the screen and statistically. Andrew spent a fair amount of time on Mitch Brown who beat him convincingly. 

JKH and Stretch used to regularly have 30 possessions in the VFL but they couldn't deliver at the next level. A lot of those possessions were in close handballs.

To my eyes VFL is slower which means it's more prone to packs and there is far less breaking of the lines.

Rivers was strangely down yesterday and didn't see much of the ball. I'd like to see him on a wing or similar for a half or so.

I suppose it's hard to get excited about M Brown kicking a bag as it has little upside. A little surprised to see Melksham in the best players. Game was okay but....

And why did Dunstan see so little of the ball.

I think your making this up.  I saw no evidence either of those 2 regularly got 30 touches in the VFL. Happy to be proved wrong.

Thanks Dazzle - it’s really disappointing that the statistics available immediately after the game are so inaccurate. In some cases, they were well off the mark.

Commentator had an irritating fixation on Jake Melksham's "gloved right hand". Repeatedly mentioning it when Jake came into the play. Was he running a practice call for his audition to "Golden Gloves"?

Overall Comment;

Given the projection of the Casey Demons this season a number of unlisted players have the potential for promotion to the big league.

Not sure it was week after week but after a slow start in 2017 and then again in 2018 I think JKH was often in the 30's and occasionally 40's.

From what I can remember Stretch was more a mid to high 20's on the wing at Casey

Thanks also from me to dazzledavey36. It would appear that the delayed updates applied only to the statistics for the Casey team. Until they get their act together we’ve decided not to rely on the stats the VFL/AFL put up immediately after games. The initial figures for some of the club’s better young guns were among the ones that understated their output for the game and it was unfair to them in particular that their day's output was misrepresented.
