Just an idea but I really loved the ruck rotation tonight with Jacko and Weid, not only for Jacko's game to get some continuation that helped him gradually get on top of BIG O around the ground, but for Weid to get involved and gain some confidence. SO when Gawn comes back, how about a 3 way ruck rotation. It was great to see Jackson in the ruck more, but it's a stop gap, there's no way he has the endurance to keep this up consistently for the next 12 weeks imo, so we need to work on a schedule that keeps Jackson and Weideman involved around the ground and up forward. So they can hone both crafts for the finals and the future, LJ  develops forward craft, Weid develops ruck craft. It's a Delicate balance, but if LJ is sticking around, he will be the main ruck within 2 years possibly even next year, so he can bide his time.

Harmes. 
Was thrown into the middle early in the game to mind Neale and did a terrific job, but what I love most about him is his ability to keep getting back up after he gets smashed in contest after contest. Numerous times last night he got to the ball first only to be crunched heavily, it didn’t worry him. You just have to keep your eye on him at the ground to see the amount of work he puts in and he hits the scoreboard. 

His first goal City End with the left foot was an absolute gem and should have him in the running for Goal of the week was at a crucial time too.

In our previous three matches, it seemed that our strategy was to go hard at the beginning, get a decent lead and then just hold it as the loading fatigue hit us in the last third. This hasn’t worked, partly because our defence has been disrupted making it difficult to hold our lead.

Today it seems that we started slowly, conserving ourselves a little, and then turned it on the second quarter. Clearly we weren’t as exhausted as previous weeks, but perhaps this also helped us converse what energy we had. 

 

I think we simply went away from doing the basics right which then had the flow on effect of dustrupting all other parts of our game.

Contested possessions, clearances and tackling pressure were all back last night and that allowed the game to be played on our terms.

He'll give you second, third, fourth efforts repeatedly. The people behind me wanted him dropped but we absolutely need him and if he can hit the scoreboard like that then he's undroppable in my opinion.

There was excellent banter at the ground last night. A die hard Bears supporter started giving it to us early in the second saying we weren’t ‘who we were last year’. I very loudly reminded her ‘at least we’re still who we were 100 years ago’.

But the winner was the bloke in front of me who yelled out to Joe ‘You’re not even in my top 5 favourite Danihers’.

I love going to the footy.

This just brings such joy, we are the most BRUTAL team in the comp, not dirty just tough and very brave.

 

That brutality and bravery was prevalent on so many levels.

The courage Fritsch shows in the air is incredible for a guy his size and weight.

Lever's running with the flight spoils and marks.

Viney's kamikaze attack on the ball and the man. Toughest hombre in the comp.

Harmes' in and under work.

The gut running of Langdon and Jordon.

Petty's want to hurt opposition players in marking contests.

Bailey Fritsch. 32.13 so far. Hasn’t felt like he’s been great this year but he is 7th in the Coleman behind 6 huge fey fwds. Only 8 goals behind Curnow and if he goes on a run he is not without a chance to win it 

with T Mac out and Brown out of form we are heading to him more and more

That was the best we’ve played since the Grand Final and far and away the best we’ve played this year. Our back 6 was back to their what made us such a hard team to beat. Lever has had a poor year by his lofty standards but wow he was unstoppable. Absolutely back his AA best. May being back must’ve been a huge help and I really hope he’s learned his lesson because he is massive to us. 

Viney was a man possessed last night, they even said it post match that he always goes in hard but last night it was finals like the way he went about it. For me BOG. 

The interesting thing from last night showed that our forward line isn’t our best line, but it just needs to be functional to a point and it needs the midfield to win their battle further up the ground. When that happens Fritta and Co get on the end of opportunities. I thought Bedford looked really lively (his checkside goal was the highlight of the night for me). Nibbler looked more like himself (but really needed nail that one in the third quarter) his forward pressure was exactly what we need, really needs to fix up his finishing. 

I thought JJ showed great confidence on “his wing”, kicking two goals is fantastic for him. I also have to tip my cap to Harmes for his job on Neale (and then kicking a goal on his as well). 

This was the well oiled machine we saw last season. Max said it in the rooms afterwards that those losses could be the tonic we needed. I’ll also pat him on the back for the mini slap in the face to the AFL for our “shortest bye ever”. I’m almost surprised it’s not in the AFLPA agreement that the bye week must have a minimum length, 10 days is a joke. 

Well done to everyone, and well done to the crowd at the ground. I made a decision not to go as I’d had a super busy week and felt it would be too much to go. Thursday night footy sucks, but it was fun to watch last night.

Bloody oath he is! Him coming in for Brown was a great move. We had so much more run and applied such pressure. He is so talented and quick. Very difficult to perform as a small fwd on limited games/minutes. He compliments ANB/Spargo/Kozzi perfectly. Should not be dropped!

Most fun I've had at a game since early last year. The way we played from the 2nd quarter on. The second QTR the crowd in the members side where I was sitting really got into it. made heaps of noise as we where relentlessly tackling ,smothering harassing the opposition and they couldn't get out out of our forward half. So glad I decided to go I forgot what adrenaline you can get watching your team go about it the right way live.

Very good sign really. They aren't junk time goals either he kicked some important ones when needed.

Don't you feel much better waking up after a win? 

Can I just say I do hope Goodwin does point out to Fritsch about the non handball he should have given to Petracca. He needs to use his teammates and not be selfish at times. 

I just want to commend Weideman in the ruck. Yes he didn't dominate but he provided a contest and will be better for it.

It feels like he hasn’t been as good this year because of three things: he’s yet to kick a bag of five or more,  his opportunities have been more limited than last year and he hasn’t been involved in general play as much.

That said, all he needs is 3 to 4 chances to have an impact. His set shot kicking is elite (he should take Tracc aside to give him some pointers), but his goal sense in the flow of play isn’t shabby either.

While last night mightn’t have been a return to form as far as goal output was concerned, if BBB plays like that again, he’ll keep his spot when Tomald comes back. Our small forwards dined out on the contested work he provided last night.

Two goals Pates 💪  Usually a VG barometer of where the team's at i reckon and a solid game it was eh.  He may not go to the levels we see of Clarry & Tracc alot of the time but nonetheless a very important cog in getting our mid-field back to its best and he can score when on which we don't see too often from the former two.

Harmes is consistently underrated by many on this site

His job last night was to nullify one of the best mids in the comp (Neale) and he did that very very well whilst also picking up 2 goals and only 6 less possessions than his opponent - great game I have no doubt Yze would be over the moon with how he went 

Take a bow Toby, those goals had me out of the seat!

 

 

Not sure if this has already been mentioned but the umpiring was decent.  They let the play go and didn't pay too many technical/soft stuff.  Yes there were some decisions missed and I was spewing on the three frees paid to Daniher but overall, that's the umpiring we want.

We're a strange team. The top team was the only one we were able to put away.

Yeah to be honest after awhile I didn't really notice them because I was enjoying our domi9nace. Yeah they missed a few early but I thought it was pretty good. When yo are winning well you don't tend to notice them as much. 

How bad is umpire no. 2’s haircut?
