Can't understand why anyone has a problem with this.

I wasn't in Melbourne last year - but the wait until it started would have been killer on the east coast. 

Obviously it's different if played at the MCG - but maybe that has soured peoples opinions.

With that said, I prefer the normal time.

The big Saturday 2.10 game is all but gone as well.  Cats/Bombers & Pies/Tigers the only good match-ups so far this year

And no FTA either.  We had a delayed telecast on FTA for a while but that's gone as well

Good for local footy but Saturday 2pm was once the only time you could go to (or watch) an AFL game

How times have changed (no pun intended)

And all the other finals being played in the evening (apart from one twilight game in the first week of the finals) has been the pointer to how much influence the broadcast partners have

Like it or lump it, that's what we are getting served up.  A TV game with the real keen supporters attending the matches

But sport worldwide is very much the same

The polls and surveys done on this were really clear that the preference was a day grand final, really interesting decision by the AFL here.

I've always been an avid defender of the bounce in the game but you're right about it holding back the best decision makers.

But the bounce has changed. It used to be pretty random, angles, sideways, whatever it was play on if the rucks couldn't both get there. But with the circle, they've made it much harder on the umps, and if it's not pretty much perfect it gets called back.

If a perfectly straight bounce and ruck contest is what they want, then go the ball up and get the better umpires.

Or find a way to go back to random bounces being a part of the game*, allowing those other ups to break into the AFL.

 

* Allowing random bounces might also have the positive effect of teams to set up a bit wider to try to protect against the opposition fast break from a crazy bounce, but also having the effect of less in close congestion?

I thought the twilight deal was sealed with the success of last years GF.  Everyone I know, nearly all of whom don't support Melbourne, thought it was a spectacular success.  At the G, in school holidays it'll be fantastic.  

NRL fans who aren't that interested in The AFL grand final won't watch it because it's on during the day and there'd rather be out enjoying their day off, but if it's a twilight game they'll probably turn it on because they're home.

Unreleased seperate polling of big business, corporate box owners and polo players had vastly different findings.

The irony about the weekend work discussion and traditional football starting times is that football games didn't always start at 2.10pm on a Saturday. Up until the 1960s it was common for those who worked Monday to Friday to also work on Saturday morning. Because of this, Saturday games used to start at 2.30pm. They only shifted to 2.10pm when Saturday morning work for full-time Monday to Friday workers stopped. My recollection is that this was probably some time in the mid 1960s.

It must have meant that some games in mid-winter would have finished in near darkness, given that there were no lights at most VFL grounds, including the MCG.

I remember 2.20 pm. And yes, it was occasionally dark on a cloudy day.

Gil has been quoted as saying that the start time is up to the Commission even though a majority of fans want to stay at 2.30.

It is our game, not the Commission's, and our wishes should be paramount.

Who cares about fireworks and entertainment? It's footy we want.

Twilight Grand final looks like being announced today.

I'm a traditionalist and like the Saturday afternoon.

But I must say we have never lost a Twilight GF and nobody else has ever won one.

What will be will be I guess.

Expect announcement for a 2:30 Grand Final 

Thread title needs a change.

Prefer daytime but could live with a 4:30 start. Don't want a night granny.

 

Eddie mcguire would be spewing. He was calling for the twilight grand final really hard. I didn't really understand the prime time slot thing though. How does 2.30-5.30pm vs 5-8pm make much of a difference? And how does that help other states watch the game? I didn't understand his argument on footy classified the other night. 

That'll help my 6yo be awake enough to watch another GF win
