What are the key match-ups? Who wins and how much by?

You wrote the question, I suppose you know the answer your after?

I'd probably have Cooper Cronk shadowed by Tracker and Billy Slater by May and Lever. Backing Bellamy and Goodwin to coach each other to a nil all draw.

I’m finding this topic too cringeworthy to pass up so I’ll play before mods delete it.

I’d send May straight to Watts.
Bowey to James Sellars.

Mitch Clark was doing pretty well for us until he was injured. I think May would have to take him. 2022 team would just have Lever picking off any passes anyone tried to send to Watts.

At the other end, Frawley would have his hands full with a fit BBB. I'd definitely pick 2022 Tom McDonald in my team, just so that 2012 Tom could be sent to him. I'd back the 2012 version to keep himself quiet.

Nathan Jones was at peak power in 2012 but our 2022 midfield would absolutely smash them.

And as a desperate tactic if I was Mark Neeld, I'd pick 2012 Max, have him wear a fake beard and try to fool the 2022 team into passing the ball to him.

Jamar would give Gawn a decent opponent in the ruck. Taps directly to Beamer (every single time). Moloney would burst forward and throw it on the boot which would be easily intercepted by Lever, Petty and May.

This is no way a dig at Moloney. He cops a bad wrap on here at times but his throw it on the boot tatic at stoppages would be destroyed by our current team.

After it happens three times in a row the vein in Mark Neelds neck explodes from yelling into the phone too loud. Before Mark can make it to the ambulance, Cam Schwab notices that the blood coming out of Neelds vein is the perfect colour he has been looking for the players guernsey. Unfortunately we are still playing in the purple one with the fake collar.

The following week Moloney is dropped and replaced by Magner

Only 3 players still on the list.   random predictions for the game:

tackles McKenzie tags Trac

who takes Jurrah? He will kick 5

Magner luckily stopped building Eastlink so he can make the game

Gysberts to win his 3rd rising star nom

maybe try Howe down back???

dont know whether to laugh or cry!

I think we will be much better structured defensively in 2013. Hearing rumours Tom Gillies will be in Red & Blue in ‘13.

You forgot about Jimmy Toumpas , Nathan Stark and Mitch Clisby. I reckon they might be great players into the future for the Club. Wonder when Neeld will win us a Premiership ?

Cough cough... horrible cold tonight...

Did you hear the Chris Dawes trade whispers?  His 100kg 195cm frame will revolutionise our forward line in 2013.

I find it interesting that there are so many one on one battles here that I believe the 2012 would at least break even with in talent comparisons.  I might be on my own here but they really should have been more competitive then they were.  Not 100% sure but did they even beat 1 non expansion team for the year?

The 2012 coaching and development teams we had at the time were just devastating to the club.  One [censored] sandwich after the next with so many good honest role players having there careers ruined.

Or

6-6-6 rule means no loose players and quick long bomb from centre stoppage works a treat 😉

That 2012 midfield is putrid and uninspiring. The 2012 forward line is pretty decent though IMO.

Anyway obviously 2022 thumps them. Not sure what the point of this thread is!

That comment is offensive and disrespectful. They were the best three in those positions that we had at the time and they deserve our support and respect as Demon players.

That they were not as successful as the current three might be due to the combination of the structure of the club, coaching, administration and player development. Who knows how they might have progressed with today's club.

2012 was a stinking bad year, after a somewhat promising 2010 and 2011 (prior to 186)

In answer to your questions, we beat Essendon once as the only non expansion team, GWS twice and GC once. The GWS win in Canberra felt like a loss.

I try to forget 2012.

We were awful that year...although 2013 was worse.

I remember when we had all these high hopes for Mark Neeld as the new Melbourne Demons coach. Lol! 😅🤣😆

Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

  • CASEY: Essendon

Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.

The Demons simply did not take their opportunities when they presented themselves and ultimately when down by 25 points effectively ending their finals chances. Goal kicking practice during the Bye?
