The lack of love for the Weid is interesting, especially for dropping marks that hit his hands. Jackson suffered from this as well, and dropped way more than Weid, but not mentioned once.

The issue is not just the dropping of the marks, but what happens after he drops or spills them.

My concern is that a) he often falls over and is not a factor in the subsequent contest

b) the leads he makes have little penetration, pace or intensity thus doesn’t split the pack open (to be fair, he isn’t built like a Dermie or Jonathan Brown)

c) he can often drop marks one out in good position. I get that in a pack you are going to mark maybe 20 to 30% of the time, but in the situation I mentioned, a good forward should snaffle them more often than not (see Brown, B.)

d) when the ball hits the deck after spillage, he is a non factor and this is the difference between him and Dogga in particular. I saw at least two times where he was going half pace after the ball hit the deck: casually jogging when he should have been putting physical heat on.

To give Weed some slack, Dogga’s agility and pace reminds me of a 2003-2006 era Adam Goodes. Don’t be surprised as he matures if they throw him on a wing. But when you see BBB, a bloke who could be mistaken for a praying mantis in footballer form at times, getting in there after a spill, getting hands in, tackling and harassing, then you’ll understand why Weed mightn’t be getting much love.

For me it was an amazingly balanced performance where every time we moved forward we looked clinical and we executed.

The most telling was May. But for a different reason than most. It was May v Hogan and the trade that set this “potential” dynasty up. What an amazingly good result for us Demons that continues to deliver!
Our recruitment and development team has been amazing.

I actually loved that decision. The new holding the ball rule calls for players to be deemed holding it earlier when they are caught. He was caught dead to rights and the ball fell from his hands. I really don't care that he got a fraction of toe on the ball as it hit the deck.

If we are to prevent sling tackles we need to call holding the ball faster rather than wait for players to get extremely suspect disposals away. We've been rewarding players who get little toe pokes on the ball after clearly been caught and dropping it for a long time now.

Fraction of a toe?  It was flush on his boot. Surely DS you are not calling for umpires to make a decision based on whether they think the ball was deliberately dropped onto the foot or 'falls out of his hands'.    We don't need another new area for "insufficient intent" decisions.

One thing that did bother me, was that umpire. She seems to have no clue how the games played and likes to hear the sound of her own voice. I think she’s the worst one out there, and yes, I’m female myself, before you call me a sexist

I think umpire 34 had another shocker. She umpired at Dees v Suns and was so biased against the Dees , not only giving wrong decisions and inconsistent decisions all night.  Lucky the players can’t complain.  I support the diversity but need to call out the poor sub standard umpiring.

At some stages tonight we looked like the Harlem Globetrotters. Maybe they should play Sweet Georgia Brown over the speakers as the side runs out.

We made the GWS ferrari look like a clapped out trabbie.

Remind me  again . . . how many premierships has Lyon coached?

None.  It was a rubbish analysis by Lyon who commonly backed the Dees oppositon last year as if he couldn't believe or accept the rise of MFC and not taking into acount of the Dees match day system .

Goody has the eyes and ears up in the box of Yze, Chaplin  etc looking over the ground and constantly in Goody's ear.

The best coaches are doing it for some time - think Fagan for example.

The first sentence is not true.

i mean of course sometimes they did.

Just as we did tonight - we won by 10 plus goals tonight after all (and in the back end of last season).

But plenty of scrappy wins too

The last dominant team was the 2017 to 2020 tigers.

Dominant in the sense that there was a big gap back to the chasing pack.

They had tones of low margin victories in that period. Rarely thrashed teams.

Ironically their most consistent big wins came in 2018, when they were as far ahead of the next best as we are now. 19-3 I think.

And they got knocked out in the prelim by big cox.

The hawks were the previous dominant team.

They probably had more big victories in their dominant period, but still plenty of 'professional' 4-5 goal wins pulling up.

The previous dominant team was the lions - and they did hammer plenty of teams.

But that is a generation ago in footy terms. A different game now.

And I disagree we are happy to cruise.

We look to dominate.

Binman

Can't believe you have missed the Cats 2007-11 and they are still around

Their 3 flags plus dynasty since IMO makes them the Best Club this  Century by a long way ( Even though the Hawks have 4 Flags)

The W and  L record will prove that .

BTW I think we are starting to make our mark in that regard.
From Round 9 in 2020 our record is :

31 WINS  7 LOSSES 1 DRAW  from 39 MATCHES.

Thats over 80%

GOODY NOW  67 - 48  - 1 - 116  About 58/59% and getting better each round.

So many good performers. I loved Vineys game, thought he was a crucial cog at stoppages as GWS were giving it a red hot crack, particularly in the first half. Jack simply wouldnt let them get on top after the first.

Sadly the Weid hasn't turned up the past two weeks after a promising performance vs the bombers.

As for the crowd, 7 news headline this morning said 20% of Australians are interstate/overseas this weekend. I am in Melbourne from the UK, went to the bombers game, couldnt bring myself to go last night for what looked on paper a routine win. Taking two four year olds with a big family day today, keeping them up till 11pm last night is not really an option - im surely im not the only one in the same boat who chose to watch on tv instead. Call me fair weather after years of 3am alarms to see us get belted (and plenty of $$ put into the club) all you like

Anyway go dees 5-0

Maybe he is like one of the Super Mario Brothers and has a brother called Luigi Clayton?

Just so long as he doesn’t take after Richard Richard of Bottom fame. Hitting people around the club with frypans, convincing people around the club to film violent household accidents, assaulting charity workers and trying to rob people with an electric cattle prod on Halloween could lead to disaster.

A highlight for me was our accuracy in front of goal. You rarely see a score like 19.6.120 but the way this teams plays it wouldn’t surprise if it becomes a pattern or a feature of our game going forward.

Hope you're right.
If they can add accuracy to the game they'll be unstoppable.

Was that over Easter? Covid also didn't exist then & you could rock up & buy a ticket. I think a lot of people miss doing that.

I'll see what we draw against hawthorn in a couple of weeks.

I’m one of those away this weekend, who would have been at the G!

The only thing worse than crap 50 metre penalties is the bloody ticketing process. Rock  up and walk in is how it should be!!

No worries. If that’s what we stand for as a club, then so be it :- we will never be a dominant club unfortunately

What, regardless of the fact we:

  • invented the game,
  • created the MCG,
  • are the longest, continually registered, professional sporting club on the planet,
  • have won the fourth most premierships in the competition's history,
  • put onto the ground some of the greatest players and coaches in the game's history (including the coach of the 20th century) and
  • have had to play against the umpires as well as the opposition's 18 players, for the last 58 years.

It really depends on how one defines dominant really. I love being a Deez supporter. When supporters of the supposedly 'dominant' clubs get stuck into us, I simply suggest they send my a card on Thanks Giving day.

Oh, and by the way, in the last 67 years, we have won seven premiership compared to the Flfth's three and Essendrug's five.

I thought Hunt turned on his B+ game last night.  Not quite back to his best, but was running through lines a bit better and taking the game on with his dash a bit.  His delivery was much better and I didn't notice any sprayed turnovers or shanks out on the full.

I'm guessing the added run goes together hand in glove with better kicking, the later giving confidence in the former.  I also don't think it's any coincidence that this uplift in perfornance has occurred with the return  of all our A team key defenders of May, Lever and Petty.

Unnecessarily over the top and absolutely correct.

Forgive me, RTG, but in the midst of our third quarter onslaught last night, and having watched us strangle the life out of another team, I shouted, “Just give us the bloody Cup and be done with it!” I may have been waving one of my kids’ scarves around madly Kevin Sheedy-like at the same time, flicking an innocent bystander in the eye for all I know, specks of saliva spluttering from my mouth. Yep, dignity and modesty have gone out the window. Time to revel in utter dominance!

He’s got a big month ahead of him as someone is going to have to make way for Salem. Hunt’s spot makes the most sense right now.

I'm interviewing the Melbourne Football Club Recruitment Manager Jason Taylor early next week on the Demonland Podcast. I'll be asking him about moving up the draft order, our new recruits (both Draftees and Trades), Daniel Curtin, our recent recruits who have yet to play a senior game, who he thinks will be the next Judd McVee and more. TOO LITTLE TOO LATE by Meggs

It was a hot afternoon at IKON where the ferocious Cats came to play, had read the manual on how to beat us and the Demons were unable to match them for the first three quarters.     With physical pressure, they took the game on with relative ease and though our resistance seemed better than the previous two weeks it was still not good enough.     Within the opening minute, Kate Hore marks within range, but her shot was a miss-kick, like a fat iron, and it kinda set a flat tone f

Following successive comprehensive defeats by fellow Top Four heavyweights the Demons play down a division this Sunday against the highly promising Cats.     Strangely, no games against the Cats for five seasons and now we play them twice in one season.     With the blueprint on how to defeat the Dees available on the dark web the real question is, will we crumble again under the finals pressure cooker or will we rediscover our #DemonSpirit and execute a turnaround?   Mak

THE SECRET IS OUT by Meggs

We were expecting that after last week’s comprehensive defeat by Brisbane, our coach Mick Stinear would have his charges coming out breathing finals fire. Instead, it was North who had the aggression, the numbers, who blocked our scoring avenues and rendered us impotent, unable to match the Kangas during any phase of the match.   Darren Crocker, the North coach, later highlighted that how to beat Melbourne is no secret following recent losses to Adelaide and Brisbane and now North.

A sunny Sunday afternoon feast of finals footy awaits at our team’s favourite home ground, Ikon Park.  Great vibes at Princes Park where we remain undefeated from 7 matches and counting. Expect the Dees to come out strongly, sparring and outmuscling the Kangaroos in the middle.  With Paxy back firing and our gun forwards mesmerising, hopefully we catch ‘em on the hop. “Cold aggression”, Lions star full forward Dakota Davidson called it. Brisbane outmuscled, outran, and ultimately overwhelmed us. They certainly came to play and exorcised their 2022 grand final grudge defeating the Demons in the rematch by 25 points. Stats count and Brisbane won the key ones. Inside 50s 42 to 24, centre clearances 8 to 6, uncontested possessions 133 to 75 and 51 marks to 27. The Lions’ sustained pressure is the kind we usually bring for other teams.   There

    WICKED WIND by Meggs

Hang out to your hats. The strong blustery conditions made it extremely difficult for either team to execute footy skills but nonetheless an entertaining match ensured for those brave enough to venture down to Casey Fields on Saturday. Impressive Irish player Aine Tighe was a late withdrawal for Freo. Maddie Gay was also a late change, and she was replaced with 19 year-old Georgia Gall, the 6-foot ex Melbourne Stars BBL cricketer who has been impressing the coaches in scrimmage games.
