There were some moments where most of the team ran to a player to congratulate their effort:

  • Kozzie's first goal
  • May after the quick-in-succession hitouts
  • Sparrow tap backwards to Fritsch to goal

Its great to see them celebrate the rarer moments that help gel this team.

On a different note, Petty's reading of the flight of the ball and speed to react is awesome.  Saved a couple of certain goals last night.

I noticed this, too - also after Trac’s second, where Harmes’ contest created the spillage - Trac was straight over to Harmes to congratulate him.

Viney was really clean and powerful in close. Best I’ve seen him for a while.
We seemed to try and move a bit quicker than we have been off half back and turn overs in general. Seemed like there was an intent to catch them off guard and on the overlap. Whether this is a tactic we used specifically against gws or if it’s the next building block for our year I’m not sure.
the umpires really had no feel for the game. This umpire respect nonsense has the least consistent application I’ve seen for years. One week you can jump around and shout at them, the next week you can’t even raise your arms. A rule like that has to be applied consistently because its impact is far too great for what it’s trying to be.

We just don't have as big a supporter base and we'll probably never catch the Richmond and Collingwoods of the league. The relatively low Round 1 crowd against the Lickers highlighted this (though interesting how much more it would've got if played on a Thursday or Friday). One flag doesn't magically get us thousands more willing to show up on a Saturday where many are away for the long weekend or attending mass.

Next Sunday, ANZAC Eve, is also Orthodox Easter. Probably won't have a big bearing on Melbourne supporters but I wonder how many tigers supporters might not attend because of it (it's their home game as well).

Posters potting Weed have no idea.

He's been better than T Mac for the last three weeks. His impact at contests and pressure has been much better than Tom's and Tom has given away numerous stupid free kicks.

Watch Goodies presser. He basically says as much.

Weed won't be going anywhere.

He has also started clunking some marks which is what I want from him at the moment. The goals will come but just seeing him mark some contested balls is great, some more time to build confidence and synergy will have some posters with egg on their face I reckon. He is marked very very hard by many, sure he's not Plugger or Dunstall but few are.

Really could rename the second quarter Steven May vs the umpires, some diabolical calls in there.

In all seriousness, great to finally put a team to the sword, the efficiency going forward was phenomenal.

Steven May is a veritable wall in defence, looked at his best tonight!

Umpiring was some of the worst I've seen.

Loved how far up the ground May was playing at times. Seeing him repel their efforts to get out of our own forward 50 was gold haha.

Can anyone tell me what the free against Kozzy was for? 15:25 left in the 3rd quarter. Umpire didn't explain, just blew the whistle and said "GWS". It was just great pressure on a defender kicking the footy, wasn't late or high.

Just savoured a replay. What stood out was the great game Spargo played - almost BOG, TMac was critical to several goals and was better than the stats suggest and Viney in and under is elite.

Spargo was electric. Great vision and execution around the ground. And he looked fired up. Great to see, the pieces are coming back together.

I’m saying once you’re caught holding the ball you’re caught. If you then kick or handball it after the tackler has chased you down and conclusively tackled you then too bad.

Go watch old tapes from the 80’s, if a player had prior opportunity and was tackled that was it. Holding the ball. Done. Now the umpires wait to see what happens and it leads to sling tackles and concussions.

Well you are being consistent if you apply it to all sorts of tackles. I thought you were singling out run-down tackles and that you'd have to give a run down tackle special status compared to other tackles.  And if you did, then you are introducing yet another grey area into the umpiring in deciding whether a tackle is rundown or merely a bit of a separation before the tackle.

My memory isn't great, but I don't recall there has ever been a time when prior opportunity has been so rigourously applied as you suggest in the 80's. Seems to me you were always allowed to dispose of it, though maybe 360 degree rotations were penalised more.

With a near full fitness list there's probably half the side that will be need to right on their game and fighting to keep their spots.  The real beauty of how we are playing is that all those players see playing team first footy as the way to keep their spot, not being the superstar.

That’s true, but who else would make way? Jordon’s doing really well on a wing IMO, and I reckon Brayshaw’s now really settled in defence.

Agree on all counts.

These were some of my favourite moments. The boys getting around Sparrow after his tap was the best to see. Rewarding team and the 1%ers.

Cannot wait for the “what they’re saying down at Punt Road” thread.

Its a bit early to open that thread as they are still discussing  yesterday's game.  This is a taste of what is to come:

  • I didn't see the game yesterday so have no idea.  Except to say God help us against the Dees.
  • It's a toss up whether I'll watch the grass grow or the paint dry.  Melbourne will be a formidable opponent to combat. It could get ugly for Richmond.

Three weeks in a row the ops fans are scared.  With good reason.  It is a joy to witness.

I'll wait until Tuesday as by then there should be enough on their forums to open that thread.

I drove last night because my experience of catching trains on weekend nights is not good. That is the only reason I will do it again. To me night games are a disincentive to going. Having said that I enjoyed a game live. In fact I loved it.

Fun fact: 3 of 7 GWS goals were from frees. 2 were quite controversial ones too. You could argue the 50m penalty against Harmes if there was a bigger crowd😂

The 50 was probably fair enough but I couldn’t see the initial high contact at all. Given Harmes made the tackle I can see why he then took what he thought was advantage and played on. That’s a big issue with the 50 for continuing to play

Out of all the recient 'dynasty' teams, at this point, Richmond are dropping off the biggest cliff.  They could become pretty irrelevant again quite quickly if it continues at the present rate.

I'm interviewing the Melbourne Football Club Recruitment Manager Jason Taylor early next week on the Demonland Podcast. I'll be asking him about moving up the draft order, our new recruits (both Draftees and Trades), Daniel Curtin, our recent recruits who have yet to play a senior game, who he thinks will be the next Judd McVee and more. If you have any further questions let me know below and I'll see if I can squeeze them in. I will release the podcast either Monday or Tuesday.

TOO LITTLE TOO LATE by Meggs

It was a hot afternoon at IKON where the ferocious Cats came to play, had read the manual on how to beat us and the Demons were unable to match them for the first three quarters.     With physical pressure, they took the game on with relative ease and though our resistance seemed better than the previous two weeks it was still not good enough.     Within the opening minute, Kate Hore marks within range, but her shot was a miss-kick, like a fat iron, and it kinda set a flat tone f

    TURNAROUND by Meggs

Following successive comprehensive defeats by fellow Top Four heavyweights the Demons play down a division this Sunday against the highly promising Cats.     Strangely, no games against the Cats for five seasons and now we play them twice in one season.     With the blueprint on how to defeat the Dees available on the dark web the real question is, will we crumble again under the finals pressure cooker or will we rediscover our #DemonSpirit and execute a turnaround?   Mak

THE SECRET IS OUT by Meggs

We were expecting that after last week’s comprehensive defeat by Brisbane, our coach Mick Stinear would have his charges coming out breathing finals fire. Instead, it was North who had the aggression, the numbers, who blocked our scoring avenues and rendered us impotent, unable to match the Kangas during any phase of the match.   Darren Crocker, the North coach, later highlighted that how to beat Melbourne is no secret following recent losses to Adelaide and Brisbane and now North.

CATCH EM ON THE HOP by Meggs

A sunny Sunday afternoon feast of finals footy awaits at our team’s favourite home ground, Ikon Park.  Great vibes at Princes Park where we remain undefeated from 7 matches and counting. Expect the Dees to come out strongly, sparring and outmuscling the Kangaroos in the middle.  With Paxy back firing and our gun forwards mesmerising, hopefully we catch ‘em on the hop. Melbourne, Adelaide and Brisbane have filled ten of the twelve Grand Final spots in AFLW history, and this dominance

    COLD AGGRESSION by Meggs

“Cold aggression”, Lions star full forward Dakota Davidson called it. Brisbane outmuscled, outran, and ultimately overwhelmed us. They certainly came to play and exorcised their 2022 grand final grudge defeating the Demons in the rematch by 25 points. Stats count and Brisbane won the key ones. Inside 50s 42 to 24, centre clearances 8 to 6, uncontested possessions 133 to 75 and 51 marks to 27. The Lions’ sustained pressure is the kind we usually bring for other teams.   There

    WICKED WIND by Meggs

Hang out to your hats. The strong blustery conditions made it extremely difficult for either team to execute footy skills but nonetheless an entertaining match ensured for those brave enough to venture down to Casey Fields on Saturday. Impressive Irish player Aine Tighe was a late withdrawal for Freo. Maddie Gay was also a late change, and she was replaced with 19 year-old Georgia Gall, the 6-foot ex Melbourne Stars BBL cricketer who has been impressing the coaches in scrimmage games.
