Retaining Gus was very important because he is a major driver of MFC culture. He's excellent at inclusion and team building. Max is a great leader - always says the right thing - but Gus is intelligent and has miles of EQ. He has single-handedly made Lingers a hero and raised the role of wingers out of the "utility" category and into an art form now recognised by all TV footy commentators. That's what I see from outside. There must be heaps more we can't see.

He’s in AA contention via the media, many of whom happen to be close family friends. 

He looked great against rubbish sides who kicked it to him. Not sure he’s had more than one coaches vote over the last two months.

The rest of these two posts really leaves a lot to be desired and makes me grateful you have nothing to do with running our club.

Parts of them very arguable, if not flat out wrong (he's not "one paced", he can kick, albeit not at an elite level like Salem or Bowey, and he is as defensively reliable as anyone in our side), they are premised off a position you know nothing about (the value of his salary), and they ignore the clear benefits we get from Gus culturally and through his leadership.

I also have no idea about the logic behind the "panic move" comment. You really think the club, suspecting Jackson's going to leave, took extra money/years and threw it at Brayshaw out of panic? After everything we've established in our list management over the lsat 5-7 years?

Heart and soul, arguably won us the flag thanks to his 3rd Q, and brings class in whatever role he's put into. Will retire as a club legend.

This re-signing is a real shot in the arm.

I don’t know about others here, but the club’s recent performances, and the vibe and persona more generally has felt very flat and uninspiring to me over the past few months. The media surrounding the contract negotiations in relation to Jackson and Brayshaw hasn’t greatly assisted either. It’s all been a bit depressing despite our ladder position.

This changes everything. I don’t know why exactly - but it just does. It’s a big contract extension, it’s a commitment to the club, it’s an absolute show of faith - in the list, in the coaches, in the future, in the club. Nice work Angus - watch Gran Torino, Million Dollar Baby, The Mule and Cry Macho this weekend. Character is what it’s all about - and, along with Trac, Clayton, Maxy and now you, we have the requisite character.

I feel this has just arrested the momentum against us, and we’re back. Let’s not lose another game this season.

What often happens is that the Club gets to sign & retain their player for a little less “guaranteed”coin than an opposition’s guaranteed offer.  But then they are often asked to give the player the opportunity to earn that higher amount by hitting performance targets. 
For example, Angus might have signed for 6 x $750, but has the opportunity to reach $850 in any year by reaching certain targets.

there's a myriad of ways for players to be able to 'unlock' extra income

personally i'm all for them earning big bikkies; they ARE the product

i'm very curious to see what happens - i think the current cba has player revenue tied to 28% of revenue in the game, plus a percent of club revenue above profits i think it is, but i would think paul marsh and the aflpa will be trying to increase that significantly next deal

i don't know, but i wonder does that 28% also cover the aflw?

i'm very happy gus is staying; as much as he drives me insane with some of his clangers, i think he's having a brilliant season and can play multiple rolls for the club over the next 6 years

Agreed, there is a lot of optimism in the air now.  We remember MFC is the best place to be and a player well within his rights to leave, being played out of position, weighed up his options and decided he wanted to stay for less money

Thinking on the cynical side - if the last 2 weeks was an orchestrated PR move, it was handled very well. create doubt, media buzz, then the big surprise news that maybe wasn't a surprise internally

I'm prepared to argue that Brayshaw is a better kick than Salem or Bowey because he has penetration and relative accuracy with both feet. I can't remember ever seeing Salem or Bowey using their non-preferred. I assume they do but the fact that I can't recall seeing them doing so suggests it's not a weapon like Brayshaw's. I should add that my interpretation of a person's kicking skill includes the benefit to the team from the player being able to turn either way so that the opponent finds that player so much harder to play on. By my assessment, Brayshaw is the best kick in the team.

Spot on Webber. Jake Niall is way off the mark, another example of “filler” due to too many vying for space.  My intel says Gus has the possibility, albeit, not likely that he would hit every target across 6 years, to match the best offer.  If he didn’t hit one single target across those 6 years, he has signed for $600 less. 
I am firmly of the opinion that it was a win/win negotiation.

Gus is smart enough to know that his reputation can only be enhanced by showing loyalty, which can only help any post football career.

And if he is keen to go into the media, being a one club player, hopefully with a couple of flags in his resume, helps his profile and therefore bargaining power. And in terms of his profile, Melbourne is the place to be.

Goodwindees, I’m trying to align the above post from you with your earlier post that said “it is all about the $’s for Gus” and that he was not interested in taking unders like other teammates had done - he was all about Gus and not so much the Club. Now you are saying that you are “firmly of the opinion that it was a win/win negotiation”. Forgive me if I am not properly understanding what you have written, but one post very much seems at odds with the second. Could you please explain?

Couldn't agree more. Players like this are the fabric of the club and you need them in a playing group. Losing Gus would have been like losing Shane Woewodin or Beamer Maloney to me, the negative effects of losing great clubmen like these would be significant in more areas than what we see on the field. 

His ability to promote the profile of his teammates off the field has been impressive as well. For the pro wresting fans he's great at 'putting guys over' 😀

600K less over 6 years is 700K a  season with triggers to reach 800K a season, which is what was rumoured to be offered by Essendon and Freo

Great point Binman about the media. Have you ever seen a player apart from maybe Dangerfield that has started working on his media career so early in his football career?  I get the feeling that Gus loves a microphone and he’s extremely competent behind one.

I think Brayshaw is one of very few players that is preparing himself in a way to give him flexibility for his working life after he retires. I suspect he will want to stay within the AFL industry in some capacity and is yet to decide whether he wants to do so on the football side (coaching, for example), the business side (player management or club admin, for example) or in the media. It's a route followed by Luke Ball, Nick Maxwell and Jimmy Bartel but few others.
