I’m more inclined to not include him in the team and would prefer to see him play out the year in the VFL.  If we were winning every week, I don’t think there’d be so many demanding his inclusion - so he’s being brought in to try to address a shortcoming in our more senior players.  This puts massive pressure on him, especially with a fickle media and fans.

I’d be very interested to see what he’s got, but that’s more my impatience rather than believing he’ll make a tangible difference against Port.

Play him when he’s 100% smashing the door down.  Still looks 5kg under weight imho.

I’m not sure it puts any pressure on him. If he comes in and has a taste then that’s a great motivator for him to keep working on his craft at VFL level.  We can always bring in Weideman if he struggles.
Against Port with a small crowd, in a bit of a nothing time slot, I reckon is a good chance to give him a taste. If he performs, well that is amazing, if he doesn’t, then so be it. I don’t think he has to perform for us to beat Port or win the flag, so there really is no pressure. He isn’t coming in to cover a role that was being performed to perfection by someone who is no longer performing it. He’s coming it to hopefully cover an already NQR forwardline.

I think that was JVRs best game to date - progressing quite nicely

Is it time to promote him - I’m still not convinced - this game against Port is an absolute must win so if the selectors think including him represents our very best team and chance to win the game I guess that’s good

JVR’s going to be a star. But I think Dees have clearly pegged this year for his development.  And I agree.  He might be nearly ready but it’s a huge step up as a key forward. JVR needs time in the gym and further forward craft.  His marking and kicking are certainly great weapons that will be great for his future.

Need to work your way into Goody’s teachers pet club.. talk to Weid for advice on entry..

Time for DL to accept the fact we won’t see JVR until next year. And rightfully so.

The age of blooding promising young forwards in important games died with Jack Watts. JVR will not solve the issues we have up forward right now. The best we can hope for is that he keeps developing at his current trajectory. And next year he will play a big part in our campaign if he does.

I’m not sure you understand the difference between VFL and AFL.

Yeah, Weid has dominated VFL for a total of 8 games over his career.

Either you’re right, or a professional football department that took us to a flag last year is ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

"Bit of a  nothing " time slot is the third BEST in the weekend!!! FTA on Ch 7.

Not Sun or Sat 1.10 or 1.45 pm or tween twilight time or 5.20 Sun arvo.

No Selection panel would make  a call based on your reason of a telecast time slot.

The game is between 2 teams still in contention and the third best of the round ahead of Dogs vs Saints really.

But more will see it due to its Friday night exposure as the 2 godchild teams of Gill and AFL seam to be favoured for prime time exposure despite regular floggings.

The comparison to Jack Watts is nonsense. The club is in premiership mode not development mode, and there is no expectation of JVR to change the club's direction. Hawks made an awful mistake in blooding a raw Dermott Brereton in a final. Oh that's right, he kicked 5 goals.

If we lose 2-3 of our remaining games, and still have an issue with the T Mac role, you would not give JVR a game regardless of VFL form? Bowey looked like a Year 9er when given a game last year.

And if you watched our VFL games, JVR is more physical in the contest than Weid.

Well that wouldn’t be too hard tbh

Time for some baked beans to release a load I think.

Need to sign this kid up for another 3+ years, lest some filthy WA clubs get in his ear about returning home.

He looks a talent. Needs game time at senior level next year or he’ll head home to WA.

Reminds me very much of David Schwarz at this stage - which is a very exciting prospect.

Van Rooyen has developed nicely, but I'd be careful to talk him up too much.

He's a swing-man, not a natural forward and will not be THE answer/solution to our forwardline woes but will help structurally for sure and provide strong off the ball support.

Our problem is we have Ben Brown, Tom McDonald, Weideman, Fritsch and a resting ruckman. And obviously we can't play all of them given they offer so little at ground level. They apply zero pressure. Like zero zero.

Van Rooyen at least has great pressuring ability for a big guy and is quick and agile.

I can see a big change to our forwardline next year both in personnel and role and it better happen or very little will change for us.

A near full strength Demons were outplayed all night against a Blues outfit that was under the pump and missing at least 9 or 10 of the best players. Time for some hard decisions to be made across the board.

  • PREVIEW: Carlton

Good evening, Demon fans and welcome back to the Demonland Podcast ... it’s time to discuss this week’s game against the Blues. Will the Demons celebrate Clayton Oliver’s 200th game with a victory? We have a number of callers waiting on line … Leopold Bloom: Carlton and Melbourne are both out of finals contention with six wins and eleven losses, and are undoubtedly the two most underwhelming and disappointing teams of 2025. Both had high expectations at the start of participating and advancing deep into the finals, but instead, they have consistently underperformed and disappointed themselves and their supporters throughout the year. However, I am inclined to give the Demons the benefit of the doubt, as they have made some progress in addressing their issues after a disastrous start. In contrast, the Blues are struggling across the board and do not appear to be making any notable improvements. They are regressing, and a significant loss is looming on Saturday night. Max Gawn in the ruck will be huge and the Demon midfield have a point to prove after lowering their colours in so many close calls.
