I am close to reaching saturation point from all the replays, commentary, video footage and opinion that I have absorbed over the last 4 days. Loving it! I hope I drown in it. But as I sat back in a moment of glowing self-satisfied we-are-the-Premiers smugness, 2 things stand out for me from all the words and tributes I have heard.

  1. Max - after 57 years of pain, it's coming home. This is the best thing said over the entire weekend. MFC is football, everyone else is an afterthought. The cup will return to the MCG where the Dees fans can revel in the knowledge it is in it right place. At Dees HQ. Home
  2. James Brayshaw's commentary as Clarrie kicked THAT goal late in the third quarter (struggling to believe how well he called that moment but it was epic): Bang.... Bang. Bang. Bang. Gives me chills each time I watch and listen.

What are your favourite words/quotes from across the last 4 days?

Huddo screaming Oliveeeeeerrrr and his voice wobbles/breaks part way through it. SEN call team also knew enough to leave a few seconds post goal to listen to the crowd.

My favourite quote goes back to mid season, when we sat 2 games clear on top.

Dr. D - ‘We won’t make top 4 from here’

Nailed it 👍

Didn’t he predict as well that we would be knocked out first week of finals?

No need for two ‘as wells’

He didn’t need to predict it, he’d done the math and knew it! 🤣

Right up there with Chris from Camberwell

DR.D is one of my favorite knuckleheads. I once used the word Knuckf..kle to describe his like. ( Oh, god, I hope Grapeviney isn't listening...)

The Doctor’s ’finest’ work will be ubiquitously included in the ‘Is Goodwin the right guy?’ greatest hits thread for sure.

Yep

Accompanied by the shot of Oliver pointing deep into the stands on the sweeping bend

The moment I knew we had them covered... (just didn't yet realise by how much) ❤💙🏆

I liked when BT said about Tracc, he kicked a Dusty-like goal earlier, he’s just kicked a Daicos-like goal. When you cross Dusty and Daicos you get Petracca.

And then he went and potted Gus for not looking at the goals as he was walking back for the kick he ….…..PUT STRAIGHT THROUGH THE MIDDLE! Pointless, stupid commentary from a pointless, stupid commentator. (Sorry, not a quote).

I was still so anxious and tense at that stage I yelled at the TV ‘for [censored] sake BT he’s not like anyone else, he’s his own person’.

Yeah. Saturday was a long day here.

Haha, yes, he used his football knowledge, which is far superior to any other person alive, and certainly everyone in DL, along with the ladder predictor to assure us all that we could not make the top 4 despite being on top of the ladder with 5 games to go.

He has gone conspicuously quite for some reason 🤔

Hell, I never said he was perfect! Sheeesh, you say one nice thing about an imbecile and folks have you madly in love with him. 😁

Yeah, that Gussie goal;  BT bagging him for “wasting his time walking back to kick it” leaving only “five seconds” and he barely finished his sentence before Gussie turns around and… BANG. 😆

My favourite quotes from BT during the game:

“The melbourne fans in that pocket have gone unbelievably”.

“Bailey Fritsch the only player to have kicked 5 in the 2000s”…as the screen displayed 5 other players who have kicked 5 goals in a grand final in the 2000s.

In the last:

Brayshaw “the crowd are calling for max to kick a barrel”

immediately after:

BT “I think the crowd were calling for the barrel”

Excruciating listening. I wish we had the prelim commentary team for the Granny, they were fantastic.

I shook my head in disbelief on that Fritta comment. BT is as thick as 2 short planks. I honestly think he has something neurological going on, someone needs to take him to the hospital for a brain scan

If this weren't the biggest game of my life and I had not had bigger things to worry about going on at the time, BT's call of "Frothies May" would have sent me into overdrive.

I'd suggest that the hospital would be better served using an echo sounder.

  • PREVIEW: Fremantle

A month is a long time in AFL football. The proof of this is in the current state of the two teams contesting against each other early this Saturday afternoon at the MCG. It’s hard to fathom that when Melbourne and Fremantle kicked off the 2025 season, the former looked like being a major player in this year’s competition after it came close to beating one of the favourites in the GWS Giants while the latter was smashed by Geelong to the tune of 78 points and looked like rubbish. Fast forward to today and the Demons are low on confidence and appear panic stricken as their winless streak heads towards an even half dozen and pressure mounts on the coach and team leadership.  Meanwhile, the Dockers have recovered their composure and now sit in the top eight. They are definitely on the up and up and look most likely winners this weekend against a team which they have recently dominated and which struggles to find enough passages to the goals to trouble the scorers. And with that, Fremantle will head to the MCG, feeling very good about itself after demolishing Richmond in the Barossa Valley with Josh Treacy coming off a six goal haul and facing up to a Melbourne defence already without Jake Lever and a shaky Steven May needing to pass a fitness test just to make it onto the field of play.

  • NON-MFC: Round 06

The Easter Round kicks off in style with a Thursday night showdown between Brisbane and Collingwood, as both sides look to solidify their spots inside the Top 4 early in the season. Good Friday brings a double-header, with Carlton out to claim consecutive wins when they face the struggling Kangaroos, while later that night the Eagles host the Bombers in Perth, still chasing their first victory of the year. Saturday features another marquee clash as the resurgent Crows look to rebound from back-to-back losses against a formidable GWS outfit. That evening, all eyes will be on Marvel Stadium where Damien Hardwick returns to face his old side—the Tigers—coaching the Suns at a ground he's never hidden his disdain for. Sunday offers two crucial contests where the prize is keeping touch with the Top 8. First, Sydney and Port Adelaide go head-to-head, followed by a fierce battle between the Bulldogs and the Saints. Then, Easter Monday delivers the traditional clash between two bitter rivals, both desperate for a win to stay in touch with the top end of the ladder. Who are you tipping this week and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.
