Skuit 10,031 Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 This guy could be a coach in his own right. I’ve said it before – pay him what he wants and he can work half-time. We now live in a Zoom era, and it’s a half an hour $50 flight from Adelaide to Melbourne. It doesn’t impact our soft-cap and keeping his IP off our opposition is worth the investment alone. It feels so good having the confidence that we will run out any game. How can we keep Burgo? 6 1 Quote
FritschyBusiness 1,478 Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 I have full faith the club will cover every way they can to do this. Ultimately Burgo's kids live in Adelaide and family comes first. I'm not worried at all about IP because the gameplan can only be executed with full buy-in, hard pressure and effort. Every coach knows what we do, we have done it every game this year so there is no secret recipe to it really. Enjoy the flag, don't waste your time worrying about this as what will be will be. 1 Quote
durango 2,024 Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 I believe the MFC has an understudy to Burgo so he has had 2 years to watch and learn how it is done. 4 Quote
DeeSpencer 26,692 Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 Rarely has a big name recruit (on or off the field) worked as well as Burgo. But I was also very impressed with the way he gave credit at one stage to the guys who worked under him. Including getting Brisbane’s number 2 man and someone back from the US. I agree we could look at a flexible work arrangement but also if we need to let him go we’ve got a capable fitness team. There will be regression next year one way or another. I think we just witnessed the healthiest season in AFL history. The lessons on hard work paying off hopefully will be with this group for a while. 2 Quote
Nelo 813 Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 I did hear Garry Lyon this morning on the radio and said he was gone and that either Adelaide or Port would sign him up. 2 Quote

So many of their "top tier" players are getting quite long in the tooth and the youngsters don't have finals ready bodies yet. I'd be choosing Adelaide if I was a player or staff. 1 Quote

Skuit 10,031 Posted September 27, 2021 Author Posted September 27, 2021 Should relocate the club to Adelaide for a year. Being in Perth seemed to work. 1 Quote
Mach5 4,768 Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 Burgo is gone sadly, but you can understand his reasoning. I think he’ll be sorely missed however we’ll be fine in the scheme of things. Quote
GM11 793 Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 Surely Bernie Vince could come up with a mansion for the family in Brighton or somewhere. Spend some of our $23 million. Quote
Ethan Tremblay 31,389 Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 Caroline Wilson, back in March, said that Burgess to Adelaide was a done deal. I hope he takes them on a camp. 3 Quote

This was reported at one stage, and I was shocked, but it turned out to be unconfirmed. I’ll eat my hat if it eventuates. Not widely known, but Balmey stepped into a consultant role at Richmond (and missed the 2020 GF) due to a serious health scare and is unlikely to be in a key role again. Even less likely to leave his family based in Melbourne. 1 Quote
FritschyBusiness 1,478 Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 Balme said in an interview after that was reported that Richmond is where his heart is. I don't see him moving to Adelaide unless we have another lockdown year and he moves for lifestyle reasons, which burgess probably has in the back of his mind too at this stage. Quote
BDA 23,048 Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 Fitness and conditioning is such an important factor in team success. I have no doubt that the health of our list and supreme fitness levels were near the top of the list of reasons why we won the flag this year Contrast this year with the debacle that was 2019 and it’s easy to see why we shelled out top dollar to secure Burgo. He was worth every cent. I wish him the best in his future endeavors and thank him for the phenomenal job he did with us 2 1 Quote
rpfc 29,030 Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 I’m just thankful he stuck around for this season. Even if it’s just an edge - what an edge! Power running is one of the three things I will remember from the Dees in 2021. Other two are defensive system and galaxy of stars. 3 1 Quote
Pates 9,697 Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 His kids are there, COVID must have made things even trickier than usual, he's helped build the fitness of the club to the point that we have broken a 57 year drought. I can honestly say thank you, and good luck to him with wherever he ends up. And if he wants to return to Melbourne for whatever reason he should have an open return ticket! Thanks Burgo. 1 1 Quote
P-man 13,367 Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 You’d hope he has left the club with enough tools to carry on his work and planning without him Incredible effort though. Joins the club and within the space of two seasons has them the fittest group in the league and holding up the cup. Some people are just entitled to have a big head. This guy is one of them. 1 Quote
hemingway 7,633 Posted September 27, 2021 Posted September 27, 2021 Big loss. You cant just copy a training manual. Or an understudy or replacement copy his methods. All top coaches have experience, knowledge and wisdom. They are unique. They have instinct, and know instinctively when an athlete is cherry ripe, undertrained or overtrained. You can’t find it in a manual. His replacement may be good but he is not Burgo. 2 Quote

Sure, he has added a lot in his time with us. I, for one, am grateful for what he has provided as part of the whole that has made the ‘21 season happen. All that being said, high performance is science and can be taught and experience implementing different approaches improves the judgement of practitioners. Hopefully we bring in really skilled practitioners and get the job done again next year. I’m not freaking out about losing Burgo, but I’m sad to see him go. He clearly knew his schnitzel. He will leave behind 40 odd players who are better equipped to manage their loads and hopefully some staff who understand sports science well and have good judgement. 2 Quote
