Agree that his injuries could have been managed a hell of a lot better, but there was really no other option with regards to leadership. He addressed the group after his first game, was always going to be taking some sort of role there.

I think it's to his credit that he's responded so well to the cutting back of his leadership role (and probably speaks volumes to how much better our off-field management is).

Viney’s finals in 2018 were amazing. I don’t think I ever lost confidence that he could do the same if we got him fit, healthy and playing with continuity.

A lot of his ball use problems came from lack of cohesion with team mates and the balance of the midfield being off.

Oliver dramatically improved his ability to use his legs this year. And Jackson in the ruck even if just for 30% provided another receiver at centre bounces.

With Neal-Bullen, Pickett, Langdon, Sparrow all flashing in and out of stoppages around the ground it’s much less of a surprise that Jack started giving those handballs and trusting the receiver. Nibbler in particular went from a guy who should never have received a handball in traffic to someone who could dodge, baulk and hit a target

He turned his back on the offer from Geelong to join them and along with Gawn, McDonald (trade bait 2020) and Neal-Bullen (trade bait 2020) have been rewarded with the ultimate prize a premiership.

When there are mids all around you running hard and providing options within a well established structure you can be a cog rather than the whole engine.  Trying to do too much isn't matter of not buying into a team first ethos, it is more about no longer needing to be "the man".  It is a mental and physical adaptation that he needed to make to become a part of elite functioning midfield.  

Jack's game was underrated, got first hands on it a lot, and his ruthless attack on ball and man just does not let up.  He also managed to avoid being the one to deliver inside 50.

I like Jack a lot and overall he had a really good game with his hardness and approach. He had a couple of costly brain farts through the piece but more than made up for them in the rest of the game. Being a son of a legend he’s been able to create his own legacy now, well done to him. 

Zero doubt he’s a vital cog to our machine.

The last two goals in the 3rd quarter from centre bounces (in our run of three in less than a minute) were started by Jack pushing the ball out to the front of the pack for Tracca, Clarry and Dogga to grab, run with and deliver. It's a role that suits him well but does not often get recognition.

I think of him as a pure footballer. Which is ironic because I also think Bailey Fritsch is a pure footballer. Totally different, so I guess the point is that they both make the most of very necessary but opposing talents in a complete team. The extraordinary thing to me about Jack is that post-suspension, I don’t think he’s been caught with the ball once, at least not then free-kicked. He’s also received a disproportionate number of free kicks. And yet he remains the inside uncompromising bull, but his game in this finals series has simply gone to another level - playing to his strengths, understanding his limitations, and not only trusting, but facilitating and being in synch with his teammates. He, like all the team, and the reason we are PREMIERS (I still can’t believe I can actually say that) is that he’s recognised/been taught to be a perfect role-player. Son of a gun gets him extra love of course.

Did anybody else notice the 'celebratory burns' on Jack right after the final siren. Everyone in the vicinity ran straight passed him. I may be reading into things a bit here, but i genuinely wonder if he has burnt some bridges following 2019 at which he then lost the captaincy to Gawn. 

I still rate him - love him in our team - would never want to trade him.

I noticed it, but I think that it was more a case of everyone gravitating to a single pile on point. Jack ended up in the tumble of most of those guys, but initially was standing a bit further away when the siren went and he lifted his arms in celebration when a lot of the others just ran wildly at Oliver... he missed out :P

I suspect Viney is not as charismatic as Gawn, it doesn't mean he doesn't lead by example.

Just watched the replay. Petracca, Oliver and Salem had a pact to celebrate together in the middle. They were jumping all over each other. But Viney went to JJ and probably went over to the coach and some of the other players.

I get the feeling our backline are really close. Particularly May and Hibberd, but with Lever, Tomlinson and the whole unit gel together. 

And Tommy Mc and Max have the shared bond of being the only guys left in the best 22 (and now the team with Jones and Jetta gone) who were there for the darkest times.

Petracca, Oliver and Salo have their own little club. Riv and Jackson. Sparrow and JJ (and Bedford and Chandler). 

Benny Brown is his own man but probably in the same age group as Max and Tommy Mc. Eddie Langdon's in the wingers club with Gus but probably does his own thing away from footy quite a bit. 

Viney's close with Petracca but has always been that touch older not to be in his little group I think. And Viney's definitely close to the coach. It also might've meant more for Jack who's been striving for this moment for his entire life to celebrate with a sense of relief more than a sense of outright joy like some of the others.

I'm rambling but I think the point I'm trying to make is there's probably lots of on field and off field relationships and we've got a whole bunch of guys including Viney who are now dads so have plenty more to worry about outside of work than who's mates with who.

The young guys when they come in and get drafted especially from interstate they have to be best mates. They're going to do everything together as they build a career. Viney might be thinking of face timing his wife more than jumping around like a mad man. Either is fine by me.

you are so right in any work place not everyone gets on as best mates,there will always be different views between each person/playerbut as a unit this bunch got a flag.And will always be bonded together with that joy

Jack Viney did MFC proud on Saturday. You come to realise in life that you are all just team members.

His work in tackles was phenomenal.

He has always upped the ante in most of the big games, especially finals, when fully fit.  When you watch the 2018 finals series he was one of the most prominent and dynamic players in the first two.

When finals are up you can count on Jack.  His only issue has been fitness and flowing from that his ability to bring the agility / sidestep off the line to get into space vs running straight ahead like a battering ram when he wasn't quite at the peak.

Personally i think the OP is way off the mark here.  Injury the main reason for the off times IMV.

You get Clarry, Tracc, Viney and Harmes at their peak.  Add an in form Maxy & Dogga into the mix and look what happens.

Rapt for Jack and family. Like the team, he has matured out of sight and recognised what it means to be a team player, how his strengths contribute to the whole. He was very influential in the finals’ series, has great understanding with Gawn/Jackson at stoppages and complements Clarry & Trac really well with his defensive work and ability to clear the path for others. He played a key part in the Harmes-Fritsch turning point in the GF. So pleased.

Our starting midfield - with him a key part of it - is dynamic, powerful and intimidating, akin to the Lions’ (2001-4) and Cats’ (2007-2011) midfields in their prime. Other teams beware!

The team individually and collectively took the chance to claim all to be top notch finals performers, where reputations are made.   

For Trac, Oliver, right down to Jake Bowey, to do what they did in front of 3,900,000 viewers cements them as legends career -wise. 

Some say TMac had a quiet game, but his shephard through of Sparrow's goal in the 3rd 1/4, set up the opportunities for the next 2 goals. Had it been a point, dogs get possession and shut down the 1/4.

Jack Viney was a key player in our last win plus the 3 finals. He is the heart and soul of our strong midfield alongside Trac and Clarry.  He has red and blue blood running through his veins. Champion player. Champion bloke.

If we were to write a new "All time" Demons team 5 years from now, 3 of our current starting midfield group would probably be in it.

If the sum is greater than the parts, we will win the next 3 flags.

Half way through 2021, I thought Jordon and Sparrow would pass him. It turned out they all excelled. Viney's footy went through the roof. His kicking finally became effective, his bullocking work was done with intelligence not just brute thoughtlessness, and his game-play awareness evolved into something close to perfection.

Have a look at that 3rd quarter burst. The issue for the Doggies was that Jackson, Oliver, Petracca and Viney  were all sprinting in the same direction in a kind of overpowering wave. None of them were fumbling, choosing the wrong option, missing targets by hand or foot, or getting in each others' way. 

Jack's final series has been outstanding and I reckon most Dees people are giving him all the love he deserves.
