A very impressive win against a very good side. Viney did a sensational job on Zorko who had 0 score involvements. Sparrow was terrific. ANB did a great job on Rich. Jackson and Rivers so composed under pressure. Fritta brilliant. Gus was excellent. They tried to play down his wing and it backfired.
And of course my man Oliver. What a star. He is a genuine freak. Two games away from becoming an all time great for this club.

Vineys best game for years

Trac must have heard my sons comment on how inept he had been at times coz he then kicked 2.!!!!!

I am amazed at how loosely they play on him (Trac, not my son).

And could someone tell me where do I find the "Do anything you like to Viney" in the rule book?

Haha myself and my dad were in your son’s camp, we both had said to each other “Trac’s having a ‘good’ game but he really needs to impact some big contests and score a goal or two”, nek minut! 😆

I believe that in seasons with no pre-finals bye, the winners of the QFs are 28-4 in prelims...

Pre-finals bye needs to be scrapped entirely. QF teams know the week break is so important which is what adds the edge to the QF. Taking the advantage away from the Top 4 for the benefit of the bottom 4 finalists makes no sense. Never did.

We lost the clearances, kick poorly from set shots and didn’t defend the ground ball particularly well. If it clicks in the next few games the opposition won’t get close.

Clearances were 44 apiece FT. We turned centre clearances around to 13-11 our way after getting smashed first qtr.

I agree we can still improve, I don’t think we are playing our best footy yet.

I remember in 2018 after both finals wins. I felt like the boys after the siren last week, just elated.

After this win, I’m celebrating like Charlie Spargo does when he kicks a clutch goal. Clenched jaw, bit of a fist pump, high five a few of the boys, then get in place and switch back on.

Loved that win, but definitely just feels like a waypoint. Job’s nowhere near done yet.

Bring on next fortnight.

Lingers as well.
Top game.

Mark Williams needs a ton of recognition for last nights performance.  Look at the Melbourne players with the best disposal efficiency last night. The much maligned ANB, Smith, Viney, Sparrow, and Harmes are right up there.

I think burgo should take due credit as well. Fitness has a lot to do with DE

Great win. Poor goal kicking the only blot on the performance. That was a 10-goal smashing if we kick straight.

There is a unrelenting focus and determination about this group. A QF appearance is a big deal but we took it in our stride and went above our business professionally. They are never rattled and even if the opposition get on top there is always a response. Everyone played their role. Team orientated all the way. 100% buy-in and belief in the game plan. Phenomenal coaching Simon Goodwin this year.

This team is on a mission. Who knows if we’ll reach the summit but it will take a special team and performance to beat us. And I don’t see another special team in it. This is our year.

Can’t believe the negative vibe towards Viney.  He had a great game.  He was also one of our best v Cats. Having him back allows Trac and Clarry to push forward as JV gets the tough matchup in the opposition. He shut down Zorko all night.

It’s great to see other sides copy our tactics to dismantle other contenders. Last week, Lever to Dalhaus. This week Allir to Dalhause.

What a great grinding destruction of a quality opponent. Our conversion was the only difference between this being a 10 goal win. Cameron was the only other reason stopping it from being a total hiding. It was unclear to me who was on Cameron early Smith or Salem or whether they were trying to hand over too high without effect. Not being able to tell probably explains most of the problem.

Conversion aside that was as good a game of brutally brilliant basics as we have shown all year. Get the ball or kill the ball. Seek first option and if not obvious get it going our way and run like hell. Whilst Clarry and Trac get accolades, the wingers club in Gus and Lingers were as big a part of that demolition. We’re in the prelim baby. One down. Two to go. Of those not mentioned, well played number 11, number 31 and number 32.

9 players from the last 4 drafts is pretty impressive

Hats off Jason Taylor and Tim lamb

Brisbane score a lot of their goals out the back. In the first qtr we played too high up the ground and had a few simple mistakes from rivers salem smith and others.

Tightened up and it was game over.

They tried to play dirty in the 3rd and should be 2 reports Mathieson and Birchall.

Class and system wins

Bloody brave selection from Goody and Co picking so many kids in a final with the older boys fit and ready to play. Finals experience will be so important so the young boys.

you could see some nervous moments from Rivers and Bowey but they settled. Not Jackson though, not sure that bloke is even human! Kneed in the face lost a tooth, had a laugh and came back on!

Loved Sparrow's game. Can see him becoming something quite special, which I wouldn't have said 10 weeks ago.

And they’ll never call him Swallow again!!!

Does he not wear a mouth guard?

You’d be amazed how many players don’t wear them these days.

One thing I particularly like is how Harmes has turned it around in the space of two or three weeks. Throughout June/July he was feckin ordinary. Most of us wanted him dropped.

Last couple of games he has be clean, tough in the clinches, not giving dumb free kicks away and an important part of what we do.

He was superb last night.

Viney is built for finals and always has been.  There are many that pot him for reasons I don’t know.  He had his flaws as all players do but he is heart and soul and you cannot teach that

I watched the replay this morning and noticed they dragged May off with 4 minutes to go to protect him.  The big fella was not happy, I loved it!

Amazingly focused team given the last few weeks -

Qld flight fiasco

Lightning strike

Did see this lol..

Wasn't happy alright, but I think once Goodwin explained to him why he was dragged he would easily been just as happy.

And let's be honest, for Steven May to be on the bench in the company of Oliver, Petracca and Gawn for thr last 5 minutes speaks volume just how much he is extremely rated by the coaching staff.

I’m hoping he gets the chance to repeat the performance of GF day against his best mate.

He, Harmes and Sparrow were the cleanest  I think I have ever seen them. Definitely on a collective basis. And they kept it real simple.
gives us a lot of options, and depth.

  • REPORT: Essendon

What were they thinking? I mean by “they” the coaching panel and team selectors who chose the team to play against an opponent who, like Melbourne, had made a poor start to the season and who they appeared perfectly capable of beating in what was possibly the last chance to turn the season around. It’s no secret that the Demons’ forward line is totally dysfunctional, having opened the season barely able to average sixty points per game which means there has been no semblance of any system from the team going forward into attack. Nevertheless, on Saturday night at the Adelaide Oval in one of the Gather Round showcase games, Melbourne, with Max Gawn dominating the hit outs against a depleted Essendon ruck resulting from Nick Bryan’s early exit, finished just ahead in clearances won and found itself inside the 50 metre arc 51 times to 43. The end result was a final score that had the Bombers winning 15.6 (96) to 8.9 (57). On balance, one could expect this to result in a two or three goal win, but in this case, it translated into a six and a half goal defeat because they only managed to convert eight times or 11.68% of their entries. The Bombers more than doubled that. On Thursday night at the same ground, the losing team Adelaide managed to score 100 points from almost the same number of times inside 50.

It’s Game Day, and the Demons are staring down the barrel of an 0-5 start for the first time since 2012 as they take on Essendon at Adelaide Oval for Gather Round. In that forgettable season, Melbourne finally broke their drought by toppling the Bombers. Can lightning strike twice? Will the Dees turn their nightmare start around and breathe life back into 2025?
