Hibberd likely not rested, given the stakes. Might have played his last game this season

Hibberd may well have played his last game for the club, out of form out of contract and 31. I hope not but it’s a possibility.

    In both the VFL and AFL games he's played this year he has never played as a run and carry half back. He rebounds somewhat from the contest, because that's how he's always played, he hits the contest and keeps momentum forward, but he is not a run and carry player who will go further up the ground like Hunt does.

    Pretty clearly those are the heat maps of two completely different roles.

    Think this is very smart… Hibb and Melk get a seniors card rest for this game, Smith gets to show his wares in a slightly different role, and we still have Hibb and Melk good to go if we have an injury forward or back.  Suspect JJ will be medi-sub.

    No chance of Geelong hosting first final at GMHBA. What, are they going to restrict the crowd to people from regional areas? How could the AFL control that? No chance

    I think Sparrow’s 7 tackles saved him. Like you I am underwhelmed but then I have been by Chunks form this season as well -  particularly his inability to chase and tackle.

    My honest opinion I actually think they'll potentially use him to lock down on Jeremy Cameron potentially. 

    I say this because he actually did the Job on him last year and kept him to 1 goal. By doing this again frees up Lever and May even more. The more I have thought about in the last few hours the more I'm slowly starting to understand this selection. Now does this also free up Petty as well to use his strength in being another intercept role?

    What you see with Hibberd is what you get. But I think Smith offers that flexibility to play on the smalls and also with the talls. Maybe they are happy with Rivers, Salem and Bowey as our run and carry? 

    I think coming into finals the club may want to use Smith on a more lockdown role just because I think teams that we play in the final will put heavy work into the Lever/May combo.

    Thx for that - what I was looking for. If Melk and Hibberd played would’ve increased our average games. 
     

    They’re 3 years older with 55 more games experience.

    No, I was replying to binman's assertion here that I disagreed with:

    I get the Jordon omission though. The Jordon of round 1-17 has been far superior to the Jordon of rounds 18-22

    I love JJ, but he's been nowhere since being moved onto the wing in that Brisbans game. If you look at his tackle numbers between rounds 1-13, he was top 10 in the competition (despite registering a tackle when playing wing). He's struggled to make an impact with his tackling or spread since.

    Sparrow's tackle numbers last week were akin to Jordon's earlier in the year. I'd say that's why he's been kept in ahead of JJ. If Sparrow fails to match his tackle pressure of last week he'll be replaced by JJ. I think the MC like that really defensive role ages that can play off half back or half forward and add to the mid rotation.

    Think you have nailed it with Smith.

    Cameron gets most of his goals from running around, rather than marking in a pack close to goal.

    Smith will be able to run with him and while a little shorter has a leap if contesting a high ball. Cameron is more of the opportunist key forward while Hawkins is the lead out player. May will take Hawkins and Smith could get Cameron with Petty on Rohan, leaving Lever able to pick up a half forward and continue sweeping and intercepting.

    I think this is what they could go with too. Smith to Cameron, Petty to Hawkins and May to Rohan. This allows Lever to float and gives May a bit of room to either rebound off Rohan or double team Hawkins with Petty.

    If we need to spin the magnets because one match up gets away from us, then we can always flip them.

    honestly i'm not upset about the smith over hibbo call, we probably weren;t expecting sav to be dropped given blic will play deeper in defence more often without stewart so he would've second rucked to stanley, and they will keep us accountable in the air so having a capable extra tall would help us out. 

    kadinia park is also narrow therefore less space to use run and kick which is hibbos strength and means more long deep bombs onto packs and crowded areas, suited to the athleticism and aerial ability of smith over hibbo.

    im genuinely more upset about melk losing his spot ahead of sparrow, hear me out coz i know this is already polarising... we've looked better in the last two weeks with our inside 50s compared to the middle stretch of the season. due to the lack of wings u can afford to play gus through the guts more to take sparrow/jordons minutes + harmes increases his gametime and u can start melky/spargs/tmac on a wing and allow them to drill the ball onto chests going i50. alternatively i wouldn'tve been mad if tmac was left out for melky to hold his spot for the same reason, having less talls forces us to kick shorter and sharper which suits our forwards, BBB, fritsch and melky on the lead particularly rather than kicks to packs which suits the cats defenders, Kola, henry, hendo and blic who will knuckle everything.

    anyway im not mad about the changes and definitely backing us in feeling pretty confident of a win

In the Barossa Valley, two rising sides go head-to-head in a fascinating battle to prove they're the real deal. Later, Carlton and West Coast face off at Adelaide Oval, both desperate to notch their first win of the season. The action then shifts to Norwood, where the undefeated Lions will aim to keep their streak alive against the Bulldogs. Sunday’s games begin in the Barossa with Richmond up against Fremantle. In Norwood, the Saints will be looking to take a scalp when they come up against the Giants. The round concludes with a fiery rematch of last year's semi-final, as the Hawks seek revenge for their narrow loss to Port Adelaide.       There was a time in the second quarter of the game at the Cattery on Friday afternoon when the Casey Demons threatened to take the game apart against the Cats. The Demons had been well on top early but were struggling to convert their ascendancy over the ground until Tom Fullarton’s burst of three goals in the space of eight minutes on the way to a five goal haul and his best game for the club since arriving from Brisbane at the end of 2023. He was leading, marking and otherwise giving his opponents a merry dance as Casey grabbed a three goal lead in the blink of an eye. Fullarton has now kicked ten goals in Casey’s three matches and, with Melbourne’s forward conversion woes, he is definitely in with a chance to get his first game with the club in next week’s Gather Round in Adelaide. Despite the tall forward’s efforts - he finished with 19 disposals and eight marks and had four hit outs as back up to Will Verrall in the second half - it wasn’t enough as Geelong reigned in the lead through persistent attacks and eventually clawed their way to the lead early in the last and held it till they achieved the end aim of victory.

      I was disappointed to hear Goody say at his post match presser after the team’s 39 point defeat against Geelong that "we're getting high quality entry, just poor execution" because Melbourne’s problems extend far beyond that after its 0 - 4 start to the 2025 football season. There are clearly problems with poor execution, some of which were evident well before the current season and were in play when the Demons met the Cats in early May last year and beat them in a near top-of-the-table clash that saw both sides sitting comfortably in the top four after round eight. Since that game, the Demons’ performances have been positively Third World with only five wins in 19 games with a no longer majestic midfield and a dysfunctional forward line that has become too easy for opposing coaches to counter. This is an area of their game that is currently being played out as if they were all completely panic-stricken.
