I think that was Spargo's fault. He marked the ball and then immediately plays on. I think some are arguing the umpire called play on, which would have been wrong (the kick was more than 15), but I reckon he thought it was touched or something. He handpassed to Sparrow who missed the snap.

My read was that the umpires call for the mark was late so it was his instinct was to play on. Who in there right mind 30m in front would play on.

The umpire should have allowed Spargs to come back given his late call for the mark.

Yeo's come off a year long injury

I'm aware of that.

The Eagles seem to rely on those two blokes to drag them over the line, yet neither can run out a quarter. Not even close

Bit of a culture shock seeing WCE Eagles supporters.. it's amazing how one team can attract so many average human beings.

To be fair, it's inevitable when you umbrella an entire state's supporter base with one team (I realise there are two WA AFL teams, but eight years of only having one was enough to galvanise things).

Imagine if there were only one or two Vic teams. We'd have no choice but to cheer along with people who would otherwise be Tigers or Pies supporters.

I do think they should show a powerpoint presentation of AFL Rules on their scoreboard before matches, though. Particularly one on "prior opportunity". It's astonishing to me how many "supporters" still don't understand this incredibly basic concept.

Sorry but how good does our midfield look without Viney. Balanced and with some outside run, always moving in a dangerous manner. Unselfish.

Harness, Clarrie and Trac is a must, moving forward.

Can't have 3 bulls in there looking for their own ball. Great work Harmes, great game!!!

Sorry bu no room for Viney in the midfield.

Yeah im not sure i agree with you 100%. I thought that our mids were quite poor in the 1st half and 4th quarter. We really lacked the defensive presence that Viney would have bought.

The WC midfield is honestly 2nd tier and yet were made to look 1st rate with their clearances and contested work. Harmes is a little too offensive minded and doesnt play his role (assuming it is [censored]-for-tat with Viney).

One thing i will say was Nic Nat is something else, he can be the #1 ruck in the competition when he wants to be. But is far too unfit, lazy and unwilling to do the hard yards. If Gawn had his athleticism boy oh boy.

Add Elliot Yeo to this as well. He was quite good in bursts, but cannot run out a quarter. Yeo was getting dirtier as quarters went on and he couldn't keep up.

The Eagles players all look so heavy and lethargic.

Kennedy and Darling must be cooked during the week, they are constantly sitting under highballs and getting crunched in contests - tough way to make a living

Love the way he plays, old fashion footballer that makes you earn every free kick.  His Barrell in the last was a monster.  He was cooked like all his team mates.  He is the only Eagle mid that really applies consistent pressure Kelly, Gaff, Sheed, Redden, Nic Nat are good on their terms but don't run to hard defensively.

We were mucked about the week before, diverted flights, then quarantine, and a lightning delay with some suss AF umpiring...

...Didn't matter!

TOP OF THE LADDER, BABY!

(Great game Nibbler!)

I actually thought the umpiring was some of the best this season

I've always wanted to see VDB do well. But his game hasn't grown.

Percentage of all players who get to 50 games: 31%. More than two thirds don't. Median number of games, all players: 19.

VDB has done well for the talent the gods have given him. Good on you, VDB.  Time for the next phase of life.

At the ground last night after the full time siren you would think the handful of Dees fans would be a little disappointed with the umpiring performance. No, it was the Eagles fans en masse leaning over the fence and hurling abuse at the umpires. One of the most disgusting supporter groups in the country. Make Essendon supporters look half decent after that effort.

I had to laugh hearing them boo the umpires at the end of the game, seriously they are in their own world over there. We got a bizarre 50m penalty that I still have no idea what it was for, but right at the end the umpires were plucking the free kicks out for them left, right, and centre.

I don’t see why not… Shannon Hurn seemingly played his second 300th game last night, according to the prematch anyways. 🙄

To be fair I don’t know how the umpire could call play on before even blowing the whistle on that Spargo mark. He kicks that goal and it’s done.

I am just glad we didn’t cop massive injuries in that last 15 minutes. Take the 4 points and bid farewell to WA, their booing halfwit fans, their [censored] premier, and their crap teams.

Too slow to blow the whistle thats why Spargo moved off his line, bad umpiring.

He was great tonight, I prefer him in the middle than Viney.

Yep definately, lucky Vanderz was just average because I would have seriously had JV playing at Casey when he returned

Doctor says I should vent:

Vanders: wt? Brought nothing other than anxiety to supporters last night.

Max: Please develop a set shot or pass it off. Spinning the ball in you hands as you walk in does my head in. (thank you for everything else ).

Team: Practice the set shots. If we hit just one in the last quarter I would have saved on the Drs bill.

Umpires: What is going on? Do the weagels supporters hold your loved ones hostage? ( I think the Dogs supporters are doing the same).

That feels better.

How good were Harmes, Bowey,Jackson and ANB!

ANB you did yourself and the team proud, congratulations on 100.

I was muting and unmuting the comms during the game because Leppa is excellent. Of course BT spoils it but he was not quite as bad as he usually is.

Some have argued that limiting May and Lever's intercept marking is the key to beating us. Well, last night May had 2 and Lever had 1 (and Gawn had 0). The wet will have impacted that, but it's impressive to see that we can play well without those two dominating the air.

That's fair, I thought it started pretty ordinary, then got good, then ended terribly haha (gifted goal to Kennedy to kick-start them after the break), although I will say that Petty got away with murder at the end haha.

Leppa was weird tho.

Praised Melksham as 'the ultimate competitor'.

Seemed to think Ben Brown was playing an absolute blinder - had good moments interspersed with being unable to break out of a jog.

He clearly has more of an idea of what's going on than most of them, which is hardly a surprise. But overall I wouldn't be racing out to sign him as an assistant from his commentary. And I could kind of understand why he's a good assistant but didn't work out as a head coach.

Didn't hear the comment on Melks (I must have been muted at the time). Agree its an odd remark

Demonland Trackwatchers braved the sweltering heat to bring you their Preseason Training observations from Gosch's Paddock on Monday morning. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to

BEST OF THE REST by Meggs

Meggs' Review of Melbourne's AFLW Season 9 ... Congratulations first off to the North Melbourne Kangaroos on winning the 2024 AFLW Premiership. Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
