Not having any Harmes defending tonight. Who was he tagging tonight? because it didn't seem like he was close to anyone. Watch Bont's two plays in the last quarter and look who is standing next to him when the game got restarted.

Now Harmes isn't the sole reason we lost, fair few passengers tonight. Also [censored] poor infront of goal again. Exact same scoring shots and yet it felt like we were only in it for about 10 whole minutes tonight.

Not to mention the the HTB against thinking he was Dusty which caused our 4th qtr fade out.....just play your f.ing role and be solid, you are not a superstar like Trac or Oliver.

Maybe I’m grasping at straws…did I mention the umpiring?

Much more evidence in that!

Feels like smothers might have been a telling stat too as weird as that sounds. We were just so slow to react with the ball in hand, made bad decisions and it's the 2nd week in a row we were disgraceful when the ball was below our knees (even allowing for conditions).

Max Gawn is clueless in the centre bounce, rarely taps to our mids and decides more often than not to grab it out if the air and hack it forward. Shocking!

Time to give Jackson a rest and let weideman play that role. Spargo would have to be close to being dropped.

Could not agree more. Jackson rest, Weid in to play same role. Spargo rest, Viney goes forward and bring Sparrow into the midfield. We depend on too few in the engine room. The disposal efficiency of our key players, Gawn, Oliver, Petracca was atrocious tonight. That is partly a combination of wet conditions and pressure but the dogs engine room was much more efficient so we have a problem there.

In the last month we have scraped over the line v Essendon, had a good win over Port, but otherwise have been particularly ordinary.

Who knows how much is in the head, and how much is 'just not good enough'??

Goalkicking, particularly set shot, for a full time professional sport, is absolutely shameful, diabolical, disgraceful and needs to be addressed immediately.

Come on guys - lift your game. Cant miss finals but won't win one either unless these gross and clearly obvious problems are addressed, and fixed.

I called it earlier this morning in Gameday thread that Bevo would outsmart us. They certainly had our measure on clearances and Gawn’s dominance was null and void.

Viney had a better game, but he was on Bont when he kicked that goal in the last (gave him a whole heap of space and didn’t even look to put his hand up on the mistake). He was then again on Bont again who got clear in the centre clearance after Viney got sucked into the contest. It was [censored] leadership and I hope the coaches make mention of it to him.

Dogs free kick imbalance was ridiculous and it’s been like that all year. Gawn should have approached them at half time.

On the evidence of the past month , we are on the nose and I think we will lose the rest of our games this season . We’ve been worked out and we’ve been rumbled by too many teams

our teams looks tired and I reckon a few changes need to be made re managing players . Midfield looking so haphazard . Many of Gawns taps going straight to opposition mids and another oppo clearance racked up . We look more dangerous when Action Jackson does ruck duty .

Nearly-Bullen's decision making and skill execution inside 50 costs us yet again.  as always. week after week.  fmd!

umpiring deplorable.

gladys beredicklian responsible for our loss also.

two good sides had a very good tussle.

On the positive side Jayden Hunt has put together a great few weeks. Can't remember him losing a 1on1 and take the game on. Yes a few disposals are iffy but really liking what he is bringing

Hard to disagree with any of that.

Think you were generous with the umpiring.

I would bring in Bedford for ANB.

I said Weid for Jackson as he  needed a rest. Don’t think he has taken a mark in weeks.

I think Hibberd is done.

I thought ANB one of our best Hibberd totally cooked  time to play Bowey

no.

in the critical moments of games he is B grade.

Bit hard to beat the oppo when they have 21 on the field. Sadly we are being umpired down to 5th spot.

Max doesn’t trust our mids work. That why he tries to clearance his own ruck work to much these days.

Yep. Great marking too. He’s had a very consistent year.

Our back half game work, stoppages inside F50 and clearance work was garbage tonight.

Dogs much cleaner tonight in the wet conditions.

Alot to work on eg. Goal kicking accuracy  set shot and on the run, thought BBB grew into the game and became a target inside 50.

JV had moments along with Kosi, Clarry and Trac. Hunty impressed me with his attack on the ball.

Not good enough tonight energy was lacking, we will gain some learnings from this result.

I did notice that no hard tags were applied like the last game eg. Libba, Daniel, Bont. Trac or Gawn didn't spend time fwd.

Dogs played their best possible game tonight good for them, lots of cards kept up our sleeve.

We will see in September.?

Goal kicking again!    We have had a very poor month.

the coaching group have had a poor month.

This time of the year we should be cherry ripe leading into finals, but we are the worst performing group in the top 4.

The coaching group seem incapable of sorting out our forward line issues and goal accuracy.

Beaten by a better team, which is fine. Even with all their injuries their players are just better than ours. We've benefited from a great run with the health of our list, especially compared to other teams, so finishing 5th is probably getting closer to a true reflection of where we stand.

At least the overall effort was better than that diabolical joke last week. With our health this was a season where we could have stolen a top 2 or 4 berth but the bizarre and unwarranted arrogance of our players when coming up against the likes of Hawthorn (twice), North Melbourne, Carlton, Collingwood, Essendon, Adelaide, GWS is going to cost us big time.

Who knows what the hell this lot will serve up next week. They'll probably be thinking they'll win it easy and let the Suns players just walk out of stoppages like we did in that North game.

There wasn’t much in it but the Doggies stoppage and midfield work is just poetry. They seem to have so much time and space coming out of stoppages where we fumble or go to ground in the contest. It’s like we are all in all the time no coverage on the outside.

Can be fixed but it’s a preseason job not something you can tinker with mid season.

Umpiring is just pathetic I mean really pathetic. Minus the two gifted goals to the Doggies - probably wouldn’t change the result but sheesh we would have had a better chance.

Viney was good tonight, Trac was poor, Oliver was good but not great. Gawn is terribly out of form. I mean just stinking big time - his tap work was woeful despite the huge number of hit outs. LJ should have a test - he is cooked. JJ was nowhere to be seen. May has played better. Hibbo is off it - I hope he finds because he’ll probably playing a lot more vfl next year.

Think we need to start playing some of the kids to see what they have. Season is cooked unfortunately.

Really? Been following us long?

Season is far from cooked. We can turn this around.

Can someone please explain, I genuinely don't understand how the dogs consistently get the rub of the green from the umps. Everytime we got a run on, they got borderline free kicks that weren't paid both ways. This wasn't one or two contentious calls, they had 14 more free kicks than us and its happened all year.

I think someone opened a thread about it but were there any compelling conclusions because i'm lost for words??

So disappointing, our kicking for goal was gross.

Umpires 110% had bearing on the result. Woeful.

Absolute must win the next 3 games to lock away top 4.

Let's see how we respond.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.

It's Game Day and the Demons have a chance to notch up their third consecutive win — something they haven’t done since Round 5, 2024. But to do it, they’ll need to exorcise the Demons of last year’s disastrous trip out West. Can the Dees continue their momentum, right the wrongs of that fateful clash, and take another step up the ladder on the road to redemption?
