For most of the game I felt we needed another marking option in the forward line.

I think we need to try Ben Brown again, but I'm not 100% convinced, particularly because I'm not sure who makes way.

I see the arguments for Pickett. He's been off the last few games. But there are clearly risks with taking his pressure and speed from the forward half out of the side.

Did Sparrow do enough to hold his spot? I liked what he did but 11 disposals from 55% time on ground, is that something we can improve on with Brown?

He does have a red hot go though, but he is not really tall, and I wish he could kick about 5 metres further

Pickett’s main issue was he’s not stupid and doesn’t blast long to no one, so he’s tried to engineer some more creative ball use and bring team mates in to it but they don’t run with him. He has to run to space more first but the idea is fine.

I doubt we’re dropping Viney. Madness that he played tho, was a mile off it.

Zero chance ANB gets dropped, as poor as he was with the ball Hind had no impact the other way.

Ben Brown’s clearly a watch and see but he has to be dominant at Casey in all facets of the game for me to be keen on bringing him back.

The 3 players I’m most interested in are the 3 who play mid/forward and can kick:

- Melksham
- Laurie
- Declase

Take Sparrow out, shuffle JJ around and bring one of those 3 in to get some skill, especially if it comes with some overhead marking in Declase or Melk, is what we need. But that means our pressure has to lift and the ins have to be up to the grade.

Based off of one game, ANB should be coming out, but based on the entire season, Sparrow will be the unlucky one.

BBB has got to come in I think.

Think we need some fresh blood. Just for next week. That was a very hard game tonight, they will be absolutely bugggerred

Played just 50%, went at 100%, had 5 tackles and kicked a clutch goal.

Until Viney gets fully match fit and unless the pressure across the ground lifts he stays.

Eventually his spot is vulnerable but it requires someone putting their hand up and until we see Casey tomorrow it’s hard to say anyone is.

@JadedI agree with this, but what if Weid kicks 3 from 10 marks tomorrow and Brown is ordinary? Would Weid get the call up for you?

No because we’ve seen that Weideman’s VFL form does not translate to AFL form.

Better game from Sparrow. I'd like to persist with him. Crucial goal, has some toe and he tackes hard.

The forwards hardly touching it was a gameplan/decision making thing in the first half. Always outnumbered. Kicking to a predetermined position. No one could spot up a lead. Tony Lockett would have struggled with all the numbers Essendon had back.

Second half much better. Although you have to nail shots.

ANB and Kozzie struggled but won't be dropped.

Lets see what happens in tmrw vfl game. I went and saw Casey play against Sydney which was our last game. Ben Brown was absolutely pathetic so be careful about calling for his inclusion.

Yes, a poor game from Ben should not make him an inclusion next week. Reward best performers in twos.

The Kozzie that's playing at the moment is why I didn't rate Kozzie before this year. Not doing basics well, going to ground easily, being a poor set shot for goal. All of these things are coming to light now. BUT we need him in the team for speed. He stays imo.

I'm up for giving ben brown a go because we have been so wasteful in front of goal this year that we need someone who can kick straight.

We just had a decent break 640.  Need to play some consecutive matches to find some match fitness and form i would think.

Selectors have shown they are picking in form players ... Weid and Brown originally got a crack after strong VFL form ... Brown played well last week in the shortened match sim and if he gets a good game in tomorrow he will be strongly considered for GWS ... Weid will need a solid block of 3 or 4 games so forget him returning sooner unless there are injuries ... lets not jump the gun however as injury news sometimes comes out a few days after the match which would change things

In B. Brown

Out Sparrow

Viney replaced Weideman, which is not like-for-like, and thus this change would rebalance the team.

More chance of aliens being found on mars tomorrow than Fritsch ever getting dropped, he's our best forward

God help us if that’s true. He gets picked behind TMac, Kozzie, Jackson, and ANB.

The fact that he kicks goals is down to the system is plays within; he doesn’t create his footy, he relies on others to put it on a platter.

And that is ok, you need a front runner or two, but spare me the ‘unstoppable’ bs.

Is anyone got their fingers crossed hoping that Ben Brown kicks a bag today?

Beat me to it HB. Kozzie will become a great player for us but he needs a rocket up his backside real quick. Trying to play Hollywood footy in lieu of team footy. Chocko needs to have a quiet/hard word to him.

Had a poor game no doubt, but did you see the chase, when he chased down about 4 different Bombers, putting pressure on each one’s disposal? It was sensational team first  efforts and gut running at full pace.

No one else in our team could have done it.

Yes, DD - that forward line is schizophrenic mess. And, yes, even with our haphazard use into the forward line - what do people think will happen in finals? It gets cleaner?

Fritsch has to be delivering into the 50 in our best side. TMac is not simply a ‘head to kick it on’ in our best side. Gawn/Jackson cause matchup issues as 3rd talls in our best side.

That’s why I think Brown/Weideman is in our best side.

ANB with 30 pressure acts will not be going anywhere. With Viney back who whilst rusty had 34 pressure acts I feel if it’s about roles, you cant play all three of Harmes, Jordon and Sparrow. Jordon ain’t going anywhere so toss of the coin on the other two. If Brown looks ready today, Brown must come in. Granted if we want to play a forward half with no one inside 50 like we did yesterday it makes no difference. Pickett would want to lift his output and strip back to basics if Chandler or Bedford show strong form today as he has been poor-ok the last few.

I just want to clarify that I still believe Weideman can be a good AFL player. But his issue isn’t at VFL level. He needs to spend some time working with someone on his confidence and aerial marking in packs. One game at VFL level won’t fix the issues we’ve seen at senior level the last 5 weeks.
For me the issue with BB is fitness. He’s proven over a long period of time that he can mark and kick. I think if he’s been training to build his fitness and can run out a game in the VFL he should come in and play a 4 week block in the senior side and we need to try to make that work. I’m not sure we can win finals with Tmac and Fritsch. You’re asking too much from two players who are not natural FFs.

Would like a bag but it needs to come with 3+ tackles and a few crashed packs as well.

Gut feel is he won't have to do a massive amount to get in, 2-3 goals along with a few marks and he gets the call up IMO.

THAT WAS THE YEAR THAT WAS: 2024

Whichever way you look at it, the Melbourne Football Club’s 2024 season can only be characterized as the year of its fall from grace. Whispering Jack looks back at the season from hell that was. After its 2021 benchmark premiership triumph, the men’s team still managed top four finishes in the next two seasons but straight sets finals losses consigned them to sixth place in both years. The big fall came in 2024 with a collapse into the bottom six and a 14th placing. At Casey, the 2022 VFL p
