Langdon Concussion

If we are very brave Rivers to Langers  wing and Lockhart to  mind the Lions smalls

This. Rivers, as we all know, is a gun. Fast, defensive, attacking, good hands, beautiful raking kick. He reminds me of Stephen Tingay.

Did anyone notice how and when it happened?

Not mentioned in the commentary as far as I recall.

Purely a guess mono. Last time I saw him involved in a play was around 13mins to go in the last. Attacked a contest near our defensive goal square and looked like a Bulldog arm might have struck him accidentally. He stayed down for a few seconds. Didn’t see him for the rest of the game and they panned to our bench a couple of times and we only had 3 on there until Langdon reappeared with a couple of mins to go.

I just hope he is ok. One AFL player (I can't remember who) is continuing to have concussion symptoms 6 weeks later.

We can't replace him like-for-like. He plays the wing in a way that few others do, more like a wingman from the 70's.

No way do we move ANB out of his role. Apart from his pressure and running, he can kick goals.

I actually thought Baker was OK during his 1 game, while not being great. But his defensive running was a negative. Are any of Sparrow, Lockhart or Bedford genuine runners? Or anyone else showing wing-like capabilities at Casey?

I like the option of Jones, but that would probably mean moving ANB to the wing which is a mistake.

So I basically have no idea how to replace Langdon!

Rivers could fill the role pretty well and will be used to being part of the system - question then would be who to replace / backfill Rivers.

Can any Casey watchers suggest anyone in form who can fill either role?

I believe the concussion came from this incident in the last. Those with access to the replay can check it out.

He still played on after this and was on the wing at the next centre bounce. Could have been delayed reaction.

And he looked flat after that in his movements and went off after the Bruce goal.  Brayshaw took his wing. Involved in one play down back where nothing much happened before that.

He's certainly down after that but the camera pans away quickly so you can't tell how long he was down.  Some have posted it was in the last 90 seconds.  Since JCB  spotted him later on, maybe he was taken off much later. Or only replaced at the last minute (but why would we do that?)

Sparrow concussion too? He was on for all of 1 min?

What I heard on Fox I think but have no other info to go on!

Re this Concussion, don't they normally give the player twenty minutes before it is called. Must have been bad to call so quick and rule him out for twelve days.

I doesn't make sense with respect to the rigours of concussion protocols, but I do wonder if they were looking at resting Langdon anyway... the footage of him last night showed him smiling and laughing with Sparrow.

Maybe, just maybe they were considering ":resting" Langdon, but surely not for the Brisbane game.

TBH, I don't recall seeing much of Lingers all game.  I'm wondering if something happened very early in the game, to the extent he just wasn't right pretty much all game, and not able to offer his usual high level of participation & dash, and they finally pulled him off near the end??

Bulldogs did everything to go to the opposite wing.

Consequently Angus did a brilliant job under siege most of the night.... not from a stats perspective, but from guarding space, blocking contests.

Actually, there were 2 moments for me when the ball was dumped kicked from a Dogs defender to just beyond our 50m arc and I knew that Gus would be there to intercept... and I just grinned at myself at the sense of comfort that even I as a spectator knew the system was working...

Very tricky player to cover for, there’s very few players that have the tank he does.

One thought is move TMac into a wing role as he had trained in that manner all summer. Another is shift Hunt to the wing role, he has the leg speed but does he have the tank?

Baker is the most obvious choice to come in as it’s like for like (in terms of role), but Baker hasn’t done a lot to give me confidence. That said it’s about taking your opportunities when they come, this could be his.

I think Gus has to remain as the defensive winger, his role in the team has been stupidly underestimated by some on Demonland.

Not sure if this has been discussed - what about Salem to the wing, Hibberd to HBF and Lockhart to back pocket?

Salem to the wing and Bowey into HB.

I like this suggestion. Bowey has great foot skills and potentially could be another Caleb Daniel long term. Half-back flank is ideal.

Interesting that no-one has suggested T-Mac to the wing and Ben Brown forward. What a difference 2 months makes.

This won't happen. Why would you move a guy who's starring up forward to the wing? I suspect they're more likely to make a straight swap which means Baker but I do like the suggestion of Salem to the wing and Bowey to HBF. It's time we saw what Bowey is capable of. Also Ben Brown did nothing last week and of course isn't playing this weekend so they won't be making any changes up forward.

Baker was in the best players against the Swans apparently.

I reckon he'll be high up on the list to replace +lingers

Is it not possible to rotate a couple of different guys through the wing and forward line? Perhaps Nibbler and Harmes? With Sparrow coming into the midfield.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
